Charities face huge bills to dump 'rubbish' donations.

Men's underwear with a hole in the crotch. Stained women's underwear. Tea towels covered what looks to be paint.
"We receive donations, sort them and provide them for a koha. Household items, clothing, anything that helps people in need and our community. It's worked really well the last four years that we've operated. However our biggest job is sorting through the amount of rubbish that comes in the donations or is dumped on us outside of hours."
She says the shop has gone from paying rubbish dump fees for a couple of bags a week to having a skip bin emptied twice a month.
She wonders whether some of it is driven by laziness and people not wanting to pay to get rid of things they are no longer using.
"We've tried to emphasise to our customers proceeds are going on rubbish fees instead of support for people in need.
"It's frustrating and really disappointing when we don't get to help people who really need it."
Sometimes, she said, it could be that people felt guilty about throwing things out and were more comfortable donating them.
"It takes a bit to change our mindsets to throw things out that we think people could still clean and reuse. However people mostly don't buy the stained or unclean items and charities are left with them to dump. I just tell people clean them up first or dump them! We're simply not going to be able to sell them."

SPCA general manager of retail Cathy Crichton said getting rid of donations that could not be sold was a cost for her shops, too.
So far this year, the bill for wastage, including dump fees and recycling, is $250,000.
She said shops tended to be inundated with donations over the summer holidays when people were home, and through other school holidays. For times when shops could not cope, donations could be taken to storage sites and a distribution centre.
She said people making donations needed to consider whether the item was sellable, and in the case of electronics, safe.
"There's an onus on the person who's donating the product to consider those pieces as a social responsibility before passing it on…we would like to think the public considers that they might be shifting a problem."
She said wastage was one of the biggest cost to charities.
"It's quite a sizable cost and all of us community-wide, you know, want to reduce landfill and wastage.
"I would say it would be great if that social responsibility is considered by all parties."

Crichton said the country needed local and central government support to develop a fabric recycling resource in New Zealand.
"As a nation, that's probably our one of our biggest opportunities. To take responsibility and find solutions within our own country. I would suggest there are people out there that are exporting fabric waste."
Fashion commentator Saffron Kingan said people often through of donating as a sort of cheat, a good thing they were doing when most of the time they were just passing on the problem.
"Certainly on a global scale this is very true with second-hand clothing exports. Most people "donate" clothing that they would not pass along to friends, nor buy themselves, but it's guilt free disposal when it's to an op shop!
"Donating should be one of the last options for getting rid of stuff, and it frequently feeds into the idea that clothing is a circular economy, when very few are repairing or repurposing, and lots of clothing isn't fit for the next person due to initial poor quality
"This also stems from the idea that clothing should be cheap- I often hear that op shops have tops the same price that they are new at like
Kmart, which is an issue because clothing shouldn't be that cheap. It's not going to encourage looking after things or buying second hand when that's the case."
A spokesperson for Salvation Army said it was grateful for all the donations it received.
"Sometimes we receive items that we cannot sell due to a number of different reasons, which is part of the business of gratefully receiving people's used items. Disposal costs are a very small percentage of our overall business and the money raised from goods sold in our store has helped save over 12 million items from going to landfill."

Mangawhai risks $100 million economic disaster if sandspit fails: warning

Many in the community worry about its future as a result. Mangawhai sandspit is described as "a hotbed of coastal management considerations" by a University of Auckland academic. The rare landform is one of just five drumstick-shaped sandspits in New Zealand. Its sand was predominantly made hundreds of thousands of years ago from volcanic explosions in the central North Island, delivered by the Waikato River. It's at the epicentre of competing tensions between seabed sand mining, local and central government bureaucracy, New Zealand's rarest bird, community groups, conservation, harbour health, mana whenua, population growth, tourism, recreation and development. In the first of a two-part feature, Local Democracy Reporting Northland reporter Susan Botting looks at what sort of health report card those connected with the rare landform give it. New Zealand's fastest-growing coastal settlement risks a more than $100 million economic disaster if Mangawhai Sandspit fails, a community leader warns. The stark warning is from community group Mangawhai Matters member Dr Phil McDermott, a former Massey professor of resource and environmental planning. A second breach of the sandspit where sea washed in from the Pacific Ocean would hit the economy on many fronts, he says. McDermott was among a range of community leaders, councils, coastal experts and government organisations who raised their fears for the spit's future with Local Democracy Reporting Northland. They have overwhelmingly given the spit's health a bare pass of C report card, pointing to a range of reasons. Rising sea levels and intensifying storms are among the issues sounding warning bells. "There are so many pressures including significant development," McDermott said. Mangawhai Matters has successfully legally challenged unfettered Mangawhai development. The sandspit breached in 1978 after a huge storm. The resulting 600 metre channel split the three kilometre long, 3 square kilometre spit in half for more than a decade. The breach led to today's main northern harbour entrance filling up with sand as Mangawhai Harbour discharged via a new exit point to the sea. Renegade action by the local community known as "the Big Dig" opened the channel. Banks in some cases did not want to provide mortgage lending. Work to open the blockage and close the breach finally started in 1991. Mangawhai Matters community group chair Doug Lloyd said surveying showed the harbour and sandspit were rated the most important feature of their local area. When Lloyd arrived in Mangawhai in 1989 there were about 600 people there. Now there are up to 20,000 over the summer peak. Photo: LDR / Susan Botting Local Democracy Reporter Northland Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS)'s Peter Wethey chairs the community group credited by many as having had a key role in the spit surviving to the degree it has. The society runs New Zealand's only dredging operation of its type, sucking up sand blown into the sea from Mangawhai Sandspit and putting it back onto the rare coastal landform. Wethey said the dredging was about keeping the harbour's ever-filling navigation channels open and protecting the spit with an about 800 metre long harbourside bund - effectively a man-made sand dune strip edging to protect it from future breaching. Longtime MHRS dredge operator Mark Vercoe said the process of sustainably delivering sand from the harbour floor to the prescribed location, that continued to strengthen spit protection, was an exacting one. Just over 5000 Kaipara District Council (KDC) Mangawhai Harbour catchment ratepayers pay $80 annually towards the society for its work. Kaipara Mayor Craig Jepson said that money was well spent to protect the spit, echoing many in the community by saying the group had to navigate significant bureaucracy to do its work. Jepson said he believed too much of the society's funds and time were being wasted on bureaucracy when they were better spent on taking action. Photo: LDR / Susan Botting Local Democracy Reporter Northland Northland Regional Council (NRC) governs consenting for the dredge's sand extraction with up to 50,000 cubic metres of sand dredgings allowed annually. More recently that quantity was not fixed but instead dependent on location and dredging depth. Dredging must take place between April and December each year, depending on where it happens and the values of those locations - outside the fairy tern breeding season. DoC rules on where the dredgings can go on the spit. DoC acting operations manager - Whangārei Sarah Newman-Watt, said the Mangawhai government wildlife refuge reserve was protected for its ecological significance, particularly for its critical nesting habitat for New Zealand's fairy tern/tara-iti and northern dotterel. She said the sandspit was the country's largest tara-iti breeding site with fewer than 45 individuals left. Fairy Tern Trust convenor and Mangawhai property owner of three decades Heather Rogan said the spit was critical for the bird's future. It was currently home to all but one of New Zealand's tara-iti nesting sites. University of Auckland coastal geomorphologist Professor Dr Mark Dickson said it was about how well the spit would do its job of protecting the Mangawhai community. Photo: LDR / Susan Botting Local Democracy Reporter Northland Thousands of sand dune plants, kilometres of sand fencing to trap sand, pest control work and dredgings from the harbour going onto the sandspit towards maintaining its resilience are among this work. Dickson said the spit would undoubtedly breach again if left to its natural cycles without this community input. "The spit's not quite holding its own. It requires quite a level of intervention," Dickson said. Save Our Sands spokesperson Ken Rawyard gave the spit a D health report card. He said DoC was prohibiting the re-establishment of critical vegetation cover on the spit due to concerns about the fairy tern. Newman-Watt said this was not the case. It was actively encouraging the re-establishment of appropriate dune vegetation - where it supported the sandspit's health and resilience and did not conflict with conservation goals. Fairy terns needed open shell patches with very little to no vegetation for nesting. "At known nesting sites, DoC removes or limits vegetation to preserve these rare habitat conditions," Newman-Watts said. Mangawhai sandspit was a dynamic system that required careful, site-specific management. NRC local coastal south councillor Rick Stolwerk acknowledged there were processes that needed to be navigated before the dredging began. He said the spit was not faring as well as it could, but community members were doing great work. Te Uri o Hau Environs representative Cindy Hempsall did not want to comment on Mangawhai sandspit when approached by Local Democracy Reporting Northland. DOC spends hundreds of thousands to care for snails after mining destroys home

Photo: Lisa Flanagan/DOC Two thousand giant snails are living in fridges on the West Coast as an insurance policy for the Department of Conservation, which has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on their care and restoring their environment-turned-coal mine. The Department of Conservation (DOC) has managed this captive population of Powelliphanta augusta since 2006, when the former state mining company Solid Energy took over their habitat on the Mt Augustus ridgeline on the western side of the Stockton Plateau, near Westport. Solid Energy collapsed in 2015 , after falling coal prices left it unable to pay almost $400 million of debt. Bathurst Resources now owns the mine, and the captive population of snails in DOC's care is now just under 2000, kept in containers with leaf matter in a temperature-controlled room in Hokitika. An Official Information Act request submitted by the Taxpayers' Union shows DOC has spent more than $411,000 in the past four years on their housing and management, including staff costs. But the Taxpayers' Union's investigations coordinator Rhys Hurley said this was a poor use of public money, and the scheme "shows the ridiculousness of the system". "It drains DOC funding away from other species, is unaccountable and offers little evidence of success," he said. Photo: Lucy Holyoake/DOC But DOC's principal advisor for biodiversity Hilary Aikman said those costs were "really reasonable", and on-par with what the department would spend on any other critically endangered species. She had just returned from a "very wet but fascinating trip" to Stockton this past week. "The idea is that [the captive snails] provide us with an insurance population while we understand how they've adapted to the areas where they were released that were away from their original habitat," Aikman said. The snails' original habitat had measured only 10 hectares, almost all of which had been converted into the mine. The bits no longer in use were now being revegetated, with plants being brought in from nearby areas to try and recreate a habitat for these snails to be released into. Some snails had survived in the wild and lived on around the mine, but up to 10,000 snails and eggs had been reintroduced to those areas from the captive population. It was a slow process, Aikman said, as the species was slow to mature - some in captivity had reached up to 30-years-old. "We are being somewhat cautious, making sure that they're surviving before we let more out of captivity, but that is because they're critically endangered, they're as rare as the kākāpō, and they're unique to New Zealand." Aikman said one of the benefits to having a captive population was the opportunity to learn more about the species. Photo: Lucy Holyoake/DOC Last month, DOC ranger Lisa Flanagan, who had been looking after the snails in Hokitika for more than 12 years, filmed an egg being laid - something that never would have captured in the wild. Not all of the cost of the species' survival had been shouldered by DOC. "The majority of the money to keep the captive population going came as part of the permitting permissions for Solid Energy when they were first set up," Aikman said. "That was part of the agreement - if you remove the habitat, this is what we need to do." And most of the revegetation work was being undertaken by Bathurst, which now ran the mine. "We feel that the costs we are spending on them, and we've spent a little bit more recently on supplementing some of the planting to help with the restoration, but we feel that those costs are really reasonable for a critically endangered species, and are quite in-line with what we spend on other critically endangered species." She said they had begun to limit the breeding of snails for which they already had plenty of genetic material, but allowing others with rarer traits to continue, to increase the diversity of the population. According to the OIA, in 2023/24, $85,000 had been spent on a population genetics study to reveal the existing level of diversity. Aikman said the goal was to release most, if not all of the snails over the next five years. Respected Kiwi writer Maurice Gee has died, aged 93
NZ author Maurice Gee. Photo: Supplied/Nelson City Council Respected Kiwi writer Maurice Gee - author of 'Plumb' and 'Under the Mountain' - has died, aged 93. Considered one of New Zealand's greatest novelists, his work extended over 50 years. He wrote about ordinary people and ordinary lives, often with the narrator looking back at events that caused damage and unhappiness. "I don't deliberately set out to do this, but the stories turn in that direction following their own logic," he said. "All I can do about it is make the narrative as interesting as I can and give those people lively minds." Maurice Gee was born in Whakatāne in 1931 and educated at Auckland's Avondale College in Auckland and at Auckland University where he took a Masters degree in English. He worked as a teacher and librarian, before becoming a full-time writer in 1975. He passed much of his childhood in what was then the country town of Henderson. The town, disguised as Loomis, and its creek are featured in many of his books. "I grew up alongside that creek in Henderson, and it seemed all sorts of exciting and dangerous things happened down there," he said. "You know, that creek I could plot its whole length pool by pool for a couple of miles even today." His reputation took an enormous leap in 1978 with the publication of 'Plumb', the first of a trilogy about three generations of a family. The novel won the British James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction in 1979. The character of Plumb was based on maternal grandfather Jim Chapple - a Presbyterian minister, who was ejected from the church, because of his rationalist beliefs and jailed for preaching pacifism during World War I. Gee inherited strong left-wing views from that side of his family and a burden of sexual puritanism, which he said caused him a tortured adolescence, although he denied claims of a strong authorial voice in his work. "I can't look at my books the way I read other books," he said. "I look at them quite differently. "I'm intimately connected with them and probably wouldn't be able to indentify my voice in them, if someone asked me to." He said his novel 'Crime Story' stemmed from his anger over the changes made in New Zealand by the Lange Labour Government in the 1980s, and politicians and businessmen are seldom portrayed favourably in his books. Gee's output included short stories and television scripts, and his children's fiction was highly regarded, although it was not his preferred genre. "Children's writing seems to be easier than adult writing, because it's coming off a different level," he said. "There's still some pleasure to be got from both and I try to do each as professionally as I possibly can, but the thing that really engages me fully is adult fiction." Written in 1979, 'Under the Mountain' was probably his best-known children's work, and was later converted into a film and TV series. He received many awards for his work, including the Burns and Katherine Mansfield Fellowships, honorary degrees from Victoria and Auckland universities, and the Prime Minister's Award for literary merit. He won the the Deutz Medal for fiction in 1998 for his novel 'Live Bodies' and the 2006 Montana New Zealand Book Award for 'Blindsight'. "Sad to hear of Maurice Gee's passing," Arts, Culture & Heritage Minister Paul Goldsmith said. "Our thoughts are with his family. "He was a prolific and graceful author. 'Plumb' is my favorite, although thousands of Kiwis will have their own." Gee is survived by wife Margareta, their two daughters, and a son from an early relationship.
