Stars coach Peter DeBoer under fire for controversial decision in season-ending loss to Oilers

New York Posta day ago

This attempt at a spark fizzled out, and instead, Stars coach Peter DeBoer is now under the microscope.
DeBoer shockingly benched starting goalie Jake Oettinger roughly seven minutes into a win-or-go-home Game 5 for Dallas on Thursday night after the Oilers scored two quick goals.
The controversial move did not provide the desired result — Jeff Skinner netted a goal less than a minute later against backup Casey DeSmith — and the Stars were ousted from the Western Conference Final in a 6-3 defeat.

DeSmith did not galvanize the team in his second appearance of this postseason, and Dallas has now lost in three straight conference finals under DeBoer, including back-to-back years against Edmonton.
'I didn't take that lightly and I didn't blame it all on Jake,'' DeBoer said.
'But the reality is, if you go back to last year's playoffs, he's lost six of seven games to Edmonton, and we gave up two goals on two shots in an elimination game. So it was partly to spark our team and partly knowing that the status quo had not been working. That's a pretty big sample size.'
Oettinger did not play well entering Game 5 and did little to inspire confidence by yielding two early goals, but pulling your starting goalie less than halfway into a potential elimination game is still a jarring move.
Edmonton scored 2:31 and 7:09 into the game to grab a 2-0 edge, although both goals did not fall strictly on his shoulders due to the scores coming on a power play and a breakaway.
The goalie stopped just 93 of 109 shots (.853) in the series after posting a save percentage of .909 during the regular season and playing well in series wins over the Avalanche and Jets.
Oettinger stopped 90.1 percent of shots in last year's six-game series loss to Edmonton.

'It's unacceptable for us to hang him out like that,' Stars wing Jason Robertson said regarding Oettinger, per The Athletic. 'The whole playoffs, he's been our guy, the whole season. Just unacceptable from us.'
Make it all the more shocking is that DeBoer went with a cold goalie in DeSmith, who had last played more than a month ago on April 26 to close out a 4-0 loss to Colorado in Game 4 of that first-round series.
DeSmith yielded three goals on 20 shots, the latter two coming after Dallas had twice cut Edmonton's lead to one.

ESPN announcer Sean McDonagh flatly said on the broadcast he disagreed with the maneuver, while analyst Ray Ferraro said he agreed with the move.
'He is your guy, but you can't stand here and do the same thing,' Ferraro said. 'You need to jolt your team. Somehow, you have to jolt them. You can only call a timeout, you can only change the line so often.'
Some labeled the move as one of panic and desperation, and that it backfired raises questions about DeBoer's future in Dallas.
While the team has reached the conference finals in all three of his seasons, it's fair to wonder if he's the right man to get the team to the Stanley Cup Final.
DeBoer is now 2-6 in the conference finals, including six straight losses in the round.
'I think it's possible to be two things at the same time. I'm really proud of the resiliency of our group through the first two rounds … and I'm also disappointed that we didn't find another level, another gear here, another way,' DeBoer said. 'I think our group needs to go, coaches, players, and reflect in the summer what we can do better when we get to this point against the best teams.
'But there's no doubt the two best teams are playing for the Cup.'

Paige Bueckers, Top Draft Pick, Now In WNBA Concussion Protocol

Paige Bueckers' WNBA career has been headed in the right direction after she was the Number One overall pick by the Dallas Wings in the 2025 Draft. But a head-to-head point guard battle with the Chicago Sky's Courtney Vandersloot on Thursday may have become literally head-to-head. That is what may have landed the Wings burgeoning star in the WNBA's concussion protocol for at least two games. The words 'may have become' apply here since it wasn't super clear at the time that Bueckers and Vandersloot had bumped heads forcibly enough to concuss Bueckers. The former UConn star point guard had grabbed an offensive rebound before driving to the basket with Vandersloot guarding her. During the drive is when the cranium-to-cranium contact may have occurred. The clue was when the Wings' point guard stayed grounded with her hands covering her face for a short moment after Vandersloot had been called for a foul. Bueckers did stay on the court playing after the play. So perhaps no one knew how hard her head had been hit. Bueckers ended playing 36 minutes in the game against the Sky, totaling with 15 points, five rebounds, eight assists, three steals and three blocks. This continued the impressive six-game start to her pro career that's amassed per game averages of 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists, two steals and one block and made her the first ever WNBA player to start off a career with at least 80 points and 40 assists over that game span. That has left her fifth in the WNBA league overall in assists. She's also the early leader for Rookie of the Year honors, positioned second in scoring, third in rebounding, first in assists, second in steals and tied for second in blocks among the first-year players. Plus, in the course of a victory over the Connecticut Sun on May 27, Bueckers became the first rookie since 2005 to tally at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists in a game. You could say that she's been writing a new Paige in WNBA history. The length of Bueckers' absence will depend on how severe her concussion is. Concussions are a very common type of traumatic brain injury but encompass a wide range of possibilities. A concussion is when a blow or jolt to the head causes the brain rattle back and forth inside the skull, leading to the stretching and damage of brain cells, which in turn disrupts brain functioning in some way. These disruptions and the resulting symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, balance issues, sensitivity to light and noise and personality changes can last minutes to days to even weeks and months. It's already been determined that Bueckers will miss today's rematch against the Sky and the June 3 game against the Seattle Storm. The soonest she could return will be for the June 6 titlt against the Los Angeles Sparks. Any return will only be after sh's been cleared by physicians. This will include an interview and neurological exam to check for any remaining symptoms. A single concussion in most cases does not have any long-term negative consequences. However, that doesn't mean that you should try to quickly in the words of Taylor Swift shake it off and return to whatever you were doing whether it's playing a sport or head butting others. Residual symptoms could affect your reaction time and ability and thus leave you more susceptible to further injury like another concussion. Plus, multiple concussions is when you have to start worrying about more permanent changes in the brain and more serious effects. . While basketball players may not be at the same risk as football players (both types) and ice hockey players, it's important to remember that basketball can be quite the contact sport. A study published in 2022 in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine did find that from 1997 to 2020, a total of 70 concussions among 55 players were reported in the WNBA. This translated to an average of 2.9 per season. On average, players returned from concussions after missing 3.8 games and 17.9 days. Paige Bueckers will probably want to turn the page on this part of her career sooner than later. But she shouldn't rush it. After all, she'll have plenty of time to be the star WNBA player many feel that she will soon be.

Jay Toia fits Cowboys vision for violent DT rotation

Jay Toia fits Cowboys vision for violent DT rotation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If his arms were two inches longer, he's a Day 2 pick. If the league valued the 1-tech the way it did before the pass-happy era, he's not on the board in the seventh. Advertisement But things happen. And the Dallas Cowboys may have found something worth exploring here. Jay Toia is already taking some turns running with the 1's in OTA's, as noted as we watched practice inside The Star on Thursday. Does that mean Toia is already more pro-ready than Mazi Smith? Or is this just more "Schotty-psychology" at work? A subtle way to light a fire under Mazi and get him "playing mad''? We don't know all of the answers here yet. But here's what we know for certain, Toia was PFF's highest graded run stopper in the class. Toia is incredibly difficult to move. And Toia comes from an entire family of NFL war-daddies. Advertisement Let's break this down. Cowboys D-line coach Aaron Whitecotton has been consistent since the day he got here: he prioritizes violence, penetration, rotation, and relentless energy. He wants fresh legs, interchangeable pieces, and an interior that attacks rather than absorbs. That's the lens you need when looking at Jay Toia. The 6-3, 335-pound rookie was a seventh-rounder in April, but don't let that shape your ceiling for him. The only reason he slid that far? Positional value. Nose tackles and true 1-techs aren't getting top dollar or draft love in a league obsessed with splashy pass-rushers. But maybe that's changing — fast (stay tuned on that front). Advertisement Now look at Dallas. The front office wasn't aggressive at defensive tackle in free agency, and they waited until Round 7 to address it in the draft. That might say more about their belief in Mazi than fans want to admit. Or maybe it's new coach Brian Schottenheimer doing what he's done all offseason — turning every roster move into a spark for competition. You need at least four defensive tackles to survive an NFL season. Some teams carry five. In years past, Dallas relied on aging journeymen like Jonathan Hankins and Linval Joseph to plug that hole. But now? Toia, Mazi, and second year man Justin Rogers give them potentially three 330+ pound bodies to throw into the fire. The problem is, most rookie DTs don't contribute early and Justin Rogers might as well be considered a rookie, too. It's the second-hardest transition in football behind quarterback. But Toia might be an exception because of the aforementioned bloodline of NFL trench warriors. You can feel it in how he plays. He walks, talks, and breathes interior football. But if that's not the case, which even despite early OTA reports shouldn't come as a surprise, then who can the Cowboys call on as the "mentor" in the room to help continue to cultivate the growth of the room. Advertisement You wouldn't be wrong to default to either Osa Odighizuwa or Solomon Thomas as the answer to that question. Those two guys are well-thought of in the Cowboys organization and also league-wide, but they're both more of your penetrating-pass-rush type 3-techs and much less so true run stoppers. So maybe this is where we glance back at something we discussed just a couple short weeks ago. Maybe the time is coming when the league starts valuing a guy like this. But for now? If Jay Toia can play? He'll be plenty valuable to a Dallas team that needs major improvement in plugging the run. Alabama Announces Big Kalen DeBoer News on Friday

Alabama Announces Big Kalen DeBoer News on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kalen DeBoer is entering a pivotal second season as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide after taking over for Nick Saban in 2024. In his debut season, Alabama narrowly missed the 12-team College Football Playoff, finishing with a 9–4 overall record and 5–3 in SEC play. Advertisement The Tide appeared poised to make the expanded playoff for much of the season, but a late-season loss to Oklahoma ultimately dashed those hopes. While last season is now in the rearview, DeBoer has found himself back in the spotlight this week following the announcement of the highly anticipated College Football 26 video game cover, which features Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Alabama sophomore wide receiver Ryan Williams. In addition to the buzz around the cover, Alabama revealed that DeBoer — along with his offensive and defensive coordinators — has chosen to be featured in this year's edition of the game. Participation is optional for coaches and players, and DeBoer's inclusion further connects the Crimson Tide to what is expected to be a blockbuster release when the game launches in July. Advertisement Alabama's post on social media read, "They're in the game," tagging head coach Kalen DeBoer, OC Ryan Grubb, and DC Kane Wommack. Fans reacted to the news: "Love this. Much better," a fan said. Someone else added, "Roll tide! Get with the times coaches!! RTR." Another fan posted, "LET'S GOOOOOOO!" "I can't wait for Deboer to do this," one more fan commented. Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer© Matt Pendleton-Imagn Images EA Sports brought back the college football video game last season to great fanfare, marking the first release since NCAA Football 14 hit shelves in the summer of 2013. Advertisement However, the new game features significant changes, including the inclusion of player names thanks to NIL rules and the option for coaches to appear in the game, which has only boosted its popularity.
