Former Vanderbilt star Karen Booker fired as Trevecca women's basketball coach

Yahoo25-03-2025

After leading the Trevecca women's basketball team to an 8-20 record this season, Karen Booker was fired Monday as the Trojans' coach.
Trevecca lost 10 of its last 12 games in her third season at the helm. The Franklin native and former Vanderbilt star player led the Trojans to winning records in 2022-23 (22-10) and 2023-24 (19-12).
Her record at the school was 49-42 overall, 33-29 in the Gulf South Conference.
"I'm thankful that I had the opportunity at Trevecca and I wish them all the best," Booker told The Tennessean.
Booker previously coached at Cal Poly (1995-97) and Sewanee (2001-03). Her career record is now 75-118. She said she will attend the NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, Florida, in search of a new job.
"I know God has good things in store for me and I'll be anticipating a good next step," Booker said.
Three of Trevecca's top players from the 2023-24 season — Keeley Carter from Macon County, Lili Wilken from Page and Konnor Gambrell from Alexandria, Virginia — did not return. Carter had averaged 21.1 points and 7.7 rebounds; Wilken averaged 10.4 points and 3.2 rebounds; and Gambrell averaged 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds.
Carter transferred to Tennessee Tech and helped lead the Golden Eagles to the NCAA tournament.
"There are a lot of components when evaluating the success and direction of our athletic programs," Trevecca athletic director Mark Elliott said in a news release. "While this decision is very difficult, it's important to acknowledge the on-court success that our program had under Karen's leadership. We thank Karen for her contributions to the women's basketball program."
Booker had seven players return from last season; they had 11 starts in 2023-24 combined.
The Trojans started the season 4-6 and won just one of their first eight conference games. They finished in 10th place in the Gulf South.

Urban Meyer Sends Blunt Message to Lincoln Riley

Urban Meyer Sends Blunt Message to Lincoln Riley originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The USC Trojans have had just one double-digit-win season since 2018. Having gone a disappointing 7-6 during his cast's first season in the Big Ten, Lincoln Riley is under pressure to do better this time around. Advertisement Former Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer turned the heat up on Riley during a conversation with Colin Cowherd on Tuesday. "I guess the way I've always looked at USC is I equate them to Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, and Florida," Meyer said. "I've always looked at USC as one of the top five jobs in America. I've got a lot of respect for Lincoln Riley, and I promised myself I would never call for jobs — because I'm not gonna do that. However, when seven (or) eight wins is acceptable at USC, that's when I don't know. I don't agree with that. Southern California Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley.© Kirby Lee-Imagn Images "I think you take a five-hour net and drop it on USC and you see the best players in the country. ... They have the No. 1 recruiting class in the country right now. Shouldn't they have that every year? I mean, USC is USC." Advertisement According to 247Sports, Riley and the Trojans have earned 28 commitments in the Class of 2026, including five-stars Keenyi Pope and Mark Bowman. Meyer wants to see results before that crop of players arrives in Los Angeles. "I think they're gonna have a great year and I think we're not gonna have to (have) this conversation," Meyer said. "But, go 8-5 at Ohio State and see what happens." Phoenix Suns' Devin Booker survives Flagstaff 'ambush' by kids, praised for act of kindness

Devin Booker seems to always find time for young fans. Even when golfing. An Instagram post is circulating of the Phoenix Suns star recently stopping in a golf cart in Flagstaff to give some young fans some attention, many of whom were wearing his jersey. Advertisement The video included the caption: "So this happened yesterday……. I got to watch these kiddos meet their idol, a moment that just sticks with you. The pure joy on their faces was like actual magic!! "And Devin… what a class act. He was so kind, patient he's an absolute gem of a human. Also, sorry for the mid-golf ambush Boook." This isn't the first time Booker has made some children's day (or year) with an act of kindness. In April, he bought golf balls from some children in Flagstaff, apparently working on his golf game some more in the cooler weather. And just a day prior to that, he stopped to purchase lemonade at some children's lemonade stand in the Valley. No wonder Booker is loved in Phoenix. Former USC star pitcher Caden Aoki commits to Georgia

Former USC star pitcher Caden Aoki commits to Georgia Last week, USC baseball ace Caden Aoki made headlines when he surprisingly announced his intention to enter the transfer portal. On Monday, Aoki made his new home official: He will play for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2026. After spending his freshman year at Notre Dame in 2022, Aoki transferred to USC prior to the 2023 season. He emerged as the Trojans' top starting pitcher over the better part of the past three seasons. In 2025, he went 6-4 with a 3.99 ERA. However, it was the NCAA Tournament where Aoki forever etched himself into Trojans lore. In USC's tournament opener against TCU, Aoki allowed just one run over eight innings, throwing 114 pitches. For his performance, he was named to the all-Corvallis Regional team. Despite being a senior this past season, Aoki was granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA. However, it appears he will spend that year in Athens, Georgia, rather than in Los Angeles. USC's lacked significant pitching depth behind Aoki in 2025. The Trojans will need to improve on that front next year if they want to have any chance of making it further in the postseason.
