Indo-Canadian organisations call upon British Columbia govt to establish learning centre in remembrance of Air India flight bombing
Toronto: A coalition of Indo-Canadian organisations has called upon the Government of the province of British Columbia to establish a learning centre in remembrance of the bombing of Air India flight 182, the Kanishka, in June 1985.
That request was made in a letter sent by representatives of five organisations to the Premier (equivalent of an Indian Chief Minister) of the province David Eby.
While a memorial to the victims of the bombing of the Kanishka by pro-Khalistan terrorists on June 23, 1985, was established in 2007 at Stanley Park in Vancouver, the Indo-Canadian groups want a learning centre 'to teach future generations about the real cost of extremism'.
The letter to Eby stated that the centre was envisioned as 'not merely a site of memory but a living testament to the resilience of our communities and a powerful statement of our collective values'.
'Premier Eby, building this centre is not only a moral imperative – it is a profound act of reconciliation and compassion. It represents our shared commitment to justice, our determination to confront hate, and our duty to nurture a safer, more cohesive society for future generations,' the letter noted.
The first memorial dedicated to the tragedy was established in Ahakista in Ireland in 1986. The bomb planted by the pro-Khalistsan separatists exploded while the Kanishka was flying close to Ireland and debris washed up on and near its shores. Memorials also exist in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal in recognition of what remains the worst incident of terrorism in Canadian history, and the worst instance of aviation-related terrorism till 9/11.
A total of 331 persons died in the bombs targeting the Air India flight, with 329 of them aboard the Kanishka. Two Japanese baggage handlers who were killed when a second bomb placed within luggage on another Air India plane exploded at Narita airport. The victims included 268 Canadian citizens and 82 children.
A website seeking the centre has also been established ahead of the 40th anniversary of the terror attack. It states, 'This was not a plane crash. It was a preventable act of terrorism, rooted in extremism and worsened by failures in Canada's intelligence, security, and justice systems.'

President Pena strongly condemned the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and expressed solidarity with the India. The leaders also exchanged views on global and regional issues of mutual interest. The State Visit of President Pena is the second visit to India by a President of Paraguay India and Paraguay established diplomatic relations on September 13, 1961, cultivating warm and friendly ties between the two nations. Indian all-party delegation discusses counter-terrorism cooperation with Egypt's Foreign Affairs Council
Cairo [Egypt], June 3 (ANI): A Group 7 delegation of Indian parliamentarians, led by Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sule, met with Egypt's Foreign Affairs Council in Cairo, engaging in comprehensive discussions on counter-terrorism and global security collaboration. The delegation arrived at Cairo International Airport on Monday as part of a multi-nation diplomatic visit and was received by the Ambassador of India to Egypt, Suresh K Reddy. Former Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Egyptian Foreign Affairs Council, Mohamed Orabi, lauded India's measured and constructive approach to recent global crises, particularly those linked to terrorism. 'Egypt has always appreciated Indian policy, and I think your prudent approach to the last crisis was very appreciated. We suffered a lot from terrorism in many shapes and means. Any attempts or any policy to curb terrorist attacks anywhere will be supported by Egypt,' said Orabi. The Indian side highlighted concerns around cross-border terrorism, especially emanating from Pakistan. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur, a member of the delegation, referred to Pakistan's long-standing involvement in major global terror incidents. 'We had successful meetings here. Cross-border terrorism by Pakistan has become a matter of worry for our country and the entire world. From 9/11 to 26/11, Pakistan has been involved in all such terrorist acts. London [UK], June 3 (ANI): UK MP for Leicester East, Shivani Raja, met India's all-party parliamentary delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, and called it a 'positive meeting.' She expressed willingness to work with India and support it in their endeavours to combat terrorism. In an interview with ANI, Shivani Raja praised India for responding to the terrorist attacks. She called on the UK and other nations to stand up and condemn terrorism. On her meeting with all-party delegation, she said, 'We just finished hosting a roundtable along with the Conservative Friends of India at our party Headquarters with the senior delegation from India. It was a really positive meeting, there was a lot of takeaways from that meeting. But overall, it was really positive and we look forward to working with India and supporting them in their endeavours to combat terrorism.' She said that the UK has always condemned terrorism, and the UK's Shadow Foreign Secretary, Priti Patel, condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. 'The UK has always condemned terrorist attacks, whether it be in Pahalgam or any other country in the world. This was no different. Our Shadow Foreign Secretary, Priti Patel, wasted no time in calling out the terrorist attack which happened in 22nd April and I think as citizens of this world, whether you are in politics or not in politics, we all have a duty and responsibility to call out terrorism whenever we see it,' Shivani Raja said. Praising India's efforts in its fight against terrorism, Shivani Raja said, 'I think India is doing a fantastic job at responding to the terrorist attacks which come to India.
