The First International Conference for Academics and Professionals in Tourism and Hospitality (ICAPTH) commenced on Monday at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah.
The three-day event, opened under the auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Mohsin al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, has participation from national and international experts featuring over 30 speakers, eight panel discussions, 15 academic tracks and five specialised workshops. Additionally, 37 research papers focusing on tourism and hospitality will be presented during the conference.
In his comments to the Observer, Dr Saeed al Rubaie put stress on collaboration of academic institutions with the industries. 'About the ongoing conference, I would like to mention that the focus here is tourism and give it a proper boost through academic expertise. Boosting tourism is high on Oman Vision 2040 agenda, as Oman stores a lot to offer to the world with its variety of natural attractions.' 'The event will throw light on Oman's tourism strength and ways to make the sector more dynamic,' he said.
Dr Ahmed bin Ali al Shahri, Assistant Vice-Chancellor of the university's Salalah branch, emphasised on the university's commitment to fostering research and development in tourism and hospitality.
He highlighted the importance of bridging academic knowledge with practical applications to support Oman Vision 2040, which positions tourism as a key driver of economic diversification and sustainable growth.
Dr Ali Akkak, Chair of the Organising Committee, highlighted the conference's dynamic agenda and said, "This conference stands out due to the richness of its programmes. The conference delves into tourism investment, destination governance, sustainability in tourism enterprises, marketing strategies, hospitality management and the role of education in adapting to the artificial intelligence revolution." Dr Nasser Mohammed Al Hamar al Kathiri, Head of Scientific Committee, Dean of Economics and Business Administration College at UTAS, said the ICAPTH is important not only for the academicians, but also for the tourism and hospitality industries.
'We at UTAS try not only to transfer knowledge, but also generate knowledge through research and innovation. To achieve desired goals, we need to sit with the private and government sectors to have a right solution for the issues prevailing in the hospitality and tourism sectors,' he said.
Professor Carlos Vogeler, Former Executive Director at UNWTO, lauded the conference as timely and relevant. He emphasised the need for integrating professional expertise with academic research to ensure tourism education and training align with industry needs.

NEDC strengthens future-readiness amid grid expansion challenges

MUSCAT: Nama Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC) has pledged to vigorously address any vulnerabilities - legal, digital, and operational—that could impact the company's future resilience and its alignment with Vision 2040 energy goals. Potential challenges, cited in its 2024 Annual Report, include smart meter data inconsistencies, delayed SCADA integration in rural zones, and ongoing legal disputes tied to land access for substation projects—factors that could delay Oman's grid modernisation efforts and expose the company to compliance risks. 'Readings from smart meters were occasionally inconsistent due to discrepancies during the integration of legacy platforms post-merger,' the report notes. While NEDC has deployed over 1 million smart meters—achieving 75% national coverage—the integration of disparate systems inherited from the 2023 utility consolidation has created data quality gaps. This raises concerns over billing accuracy, energy auditing, and real-time load management, particularly as the utility sector becomes increasingly digitised. In parallel, the report reveals delays in achieving full operational control across NEDC's diverse service regions. 'Progress in integrating remote monitoring with regional control centres is ongoing, with delays in full real-time observability in rural zones,' the report says. This limited grid visibility in certain governorates means parts of the network remain vulnerable to manual fault detection, delaying outage responses and reducing the effectiveness of smart infrastructure investments. The report also discloses that 'legal proceedings related to disputes over right-of-way and land access have been initiated in two governorates'. These disputes have the potential to impact grid expansion timelines, especially for primary substations serving planned residential and industrial areas. Despite these risks, NEDC maintained its core performance indicators, including RO 307 million in revenue and a 3.6% increase in customer accounts. The company has also invested RO 154 million in capital expansion, while achieving an Omanisation rate of 98.6%. Yet the road ahead will require more than technical upgrades. Stronger regulatory alignment, proactive community engagement on land access, and cyber-governance reforms will be crucial to ensure NEDC not only grows—but does so sustainably.

New public transport hub to come up in Buraimi

Buraimi – The Governorate of Buraimi and Mwasalat signed an agreement last week to establish a new integrated public transport station in the wilayat of Buraimi. The project forms part of efforts to expand sustainable mobility infrastructure under Oman Vision 2040. The new transport station will be developed in the North Aqda area on a 56,000sqm plot, serving both intercity and local routes. Facilities will include a smart taxi terminal, micro-mobility options, air-conditioned waiting areas, commercial and logistics spaces, parking for buses and private vehicles, as well as dedicated offices for operations. The agreement was signed in the presence of H E Eng Khamis bin Mohammed al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport in the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. Dr Hamad bin Ahmed al Busaidi, Governor of Buraimi, signed on behalf of the governorate, while Eng Bader bin Mohammed al Nadabi, CEO of Mwasalat, represented the company. Under the terms of the agreement, Mwasalat will take on technical responsibilities including design specifications and implementation oversight. The company will also manage and operate the station once it is completed. The governorate will provide funding and manage regulatory aspects such as land allocation and zoning approvals. Busaidi said the station would support a shift in the public transport landscape in Buraimi. 'The station will serve a large number of passengers, especially with the 12 daily trips between Muscat and Buraimi,' he said. 'It will also reinforce Buraimi's position as a key transit point along the Muscat-Abu Dhabi corridor.' Eng Nadabi said the project also has commercial potential. 'A tender for the station's development and operation will be issued shortly,' he said. 'Construction is due to begin within three months and is expected to be completed in three years.' The initiative aligns with Oman's national objective to enhance domestic connectivity and promote governorates as regional centres for transport and logistics.

be'ah, OQ sign deal for biogas project

Muscat – Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) and OQ Trading have signed a cooperation agreement to develop a national project focused on producing biogas (biomethane) and bio-carbon dioxide by processing organic waste from landfills and future biofacilities managed by be'ah. This collaboration aims to turn environmental challenges into promising economic opportunities by utilising approximately 20mn cubic metres of biogas extracted from these sites – comprising around 40% biomethane (a renewable fuel) and 60% bio-CO₂ for sustainable industrial applications. The agreement sets out a roadmap for conducting technical and economic feasibility studies, infrastructure assessments, and exploring commercial marketing opportunities for the project's outputs. It also aims to create attractive local investment prospects aligned with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. Both companies highlighted that this partnership represents an integrated national collaboration between the energy and environmental sectors. It combines be'ah's expertise in waste and resource management with OQ Trading's global energy capabilities to reinforce Oman's position as a regional hub for clean energy. Eng Tariq Ali al Amri, CEO of be'ah, stated that the project marks a new milestone in energy recovery from organic waste through sustainable methods – converting environmental challenges into developmental and economic opportunities. He noted that biogas and bio-CO₂ production would reduce emissions, support Oman's net-zero goals, enhance waste management efficiency, and provide alternative energy sources. Said Talib al Maawali, Executive Director for the Middle East at OQ Trading, described the project as an attractive opportunity to diversify Oman's energy mix in line with the 2050 carbon neutrality targets and global trends towards sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions. He regarded the initiative as a strategic nucleus that will stimulate further investment in waste-to-energy initiatives and strengthen clean energy value chains. ONA
