Over 200 prisoners break out of Pakistani jail

KARACHI: More than 200 inmates escaped from a jail in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi late on Monday when they overpowered prison guards after being allowed to leave their cells following a series of earthquakes, local officials and police said. The jailbreak began just before midnight and continued into the early hours of Tuesday after hundreds of prisoners were allowed into the courtyard of the District Malir prison because of the tremors, Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar, the provincial law minister, told reporters at the scene on Tuesday. Police said the prisoners snatched guns from prison staff and forced open the main gate after a shootout, evading paramilitary soldiers. At least one prisoner was killed and three guards wounded, said Provincial Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon. "I heard the firing for quite some time and then some time later prisoners made their way out running in all directions," Bukhsh, a private security guard at a residential complex opposite the jail who goes by a single name, said. He added that some of the prisoners entered the apartment complex before being taken away by police. — Reuters

Pakistan teen influencer killed after 'rejecting' man

Islamabad: Pakistani police on Tuesday said a 17-year-old TikTok star was shot dead by a man who had repeatedly contacted her online. Sana Yousaf, who turned 17 last week and had more than a million followers across her social media accounts, was killed at her home in the capital Islamabad on Monday evening. The police have arrested a 22-year-old on suspicion of her murder who spent hours loitering outside her home. "It was a case of repeated rejections. The boy was trying to reach out to her time and again," Islamabad police chief Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said during a news conference. "It was a gruesome and cold-blooded murder," Rizvi added. Yousaf had more than 800,000 followers on TikTok, a wildly popular platform in Pakistan, where she posted lip-sync videos, skincare tips, and promotional content for beauty products. The last video posted on her account was hours before her murder, in which she was seen cutting a cake for her birthday. "Rest in Peace" and "Justice for Sana", read some comments under the video. Violence against women is pervasive in Pakistan according to the country's Human Rights Commission, and cases of women being attacked after rejecting marriage proposals are not uncommon. In 2021, 27-year-old Noor Mukadam was beheaded by her Pakistani-American boyfriend, Zahir Jaffer, after she rejected his marriage proposal in a case that sparked widespread anger. In 2016, Khadija Siddiqui survived being stabbed 23 times by a jilted ex-boyfriend.

‘Passports of Pakistanis deported from Oman, GCC to be cancelled'

Muscat: Pakistani expats deported from Oman and other countries will have their passports cancelled on arrival, a senior official of the Pakistan government said. Pakistan's federal government has decided to take stringent measures against its citizens deported from other countries for illegal activities by cancelling their passports and registering criminal charges, in a bid to curb a growing issue that officials say is tarnishing the country's international image. This was announced following a meeting of Pakistan's Ministry of Interior, chaired by federal interior minister Mohsin Naqvi. Confirming this to Times of Oman, Ambassador of Pakistan to Oman, Syed Naveed Safdar Bokhari, said, 'It's is a step to check illegal immigration and to ensure that bonafide immigrants and job seekers come to Oman. This will also ensure that if anyone is arrested for violating law in Oman and deported, then that person will not be able to travel abroad again. This measure shows Pakistan's readiness to take tough measures to curb illegal immigration. This measure will help in ensuring that legal ways of promoting employment for Pakistani citizens in Oman are strengthened.' According to the Pakistan government, the names of the deported expats will also be placed on the passport control list for five years, putting restrictions on them to travel abroad. This decision was taken after a large number of people were deported from the Gulf and European countries for illegal stays and working illegally. There are millions of Pakistanis living and working in foreign countries, mainly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Europe, the US, Australia, Malaysia and others. The NCSI in Oman said that there were 318,208 Pakistani expatriates in Oman at the end of April 2025.
