Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami has slammed the performance of the bowling unit, barring Jasprit Bumrah, in the first Test against England at Leeds, which the visiting team lost by five wickets. Bumrah, who took a fifer in the first innings and could have had more wickets if Indian fielders had held onto their catches, was the lone bright spot in Indian bowling in the Headingley Test as Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur failed to provide him the required support.

A latest report on Thursday stated that Bumrah may sit out the second Test at Edgbaston despite India being 1-0 down as the team management wants to manage his workload. This is set to add to India's problems.
Shami sends clear message to Prasidh, Siraj
Shami, who was ruled out of the England Test series due to an injury, feels there's still a lot of work to be done on Indian bowlers who must talk to Bumrah and learn from him about planning and execution.
'Bumrah did not get the support he needed, is what I feel, otherwise we could have had a bigger lead in the first innings,' Shami said on his YouTube channel while discussing India's six-run lead after the first innings.
Talking about England's successful 371-run chase, Shami said: 'Bowling could have been better. We could have drawn the game….Other Indian bowlers should talk to Bumrah and learn from him. They should talk about planning with him and support him. If they will support Bumrah, then we can easily win the match. If I talk about the first match, then I think we need to do a little work in the bowling.'
Shami acknowledged that Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur took two wickets each on Day 5, but added that it came too late. 'Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets each in the 2nd innings, but by the time Shardul dismissed two England batters, the match was out of India's reach,' he added.
'It's important someone supports Bumrah. As a bowling side, we gave up many easy runs. We will need to find out how to strengthen Indian bowling if we have to win the series.'

'Are we seeing the decline of Ravindra Jadeja?' Gambhir told to 'be bold' and demote all-rounder, look for alternatives

With the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja has become India's frontline spinner in Tests. But is it really the way to go about it? India head coach Gautam Gambhir has been asked a serious question from the Australian shores and told to make bold calls if he wants his team to save the series after losing the opener to England by five wickets. Jadeja, once a lethal bowling pair alongside Ashwin, is 36, and against all expectations, proved ineffective in the Headingley Test. Conditions in England are such that playing two spinners is as rare as India winning a Test series there. So if the opportunity provides, why not prioritise a better spinner, a specialised spinner? Ravindra Jadeja, left, is walking on thin ice(Reuters) Former Australia wicketkeeper batter Brad Haddin makes some valid points about Jadeja, wondering if the India all-rounder is slipping down. There was a time when Jadeja was undroppable – heck, after 2017, his batting peaked, and he even scored a century during the 2022 Birmingham Test, albeit India lost. But when on the final day, Jadeja picked just one wicket, unable to make the most of the rough outside off-stump to the left-hander, Haddin feels that leaving him out for Kuldeep Yadav is a move India should be willing to make. "Are we seeing the decline of Ravindra Jadeja? I mean yes he is effective in Indian conditions and how hard it is to play left-arm spin in India but I don't think he is the best option to have in the team spin wise. I would look at Kuldeep. Someone who is an attacking spinner, who can get wickets. You've got a couple of hold-in bowlers. Siraj can play that role but I think they need to be a bit more bold in their selection of bowlers," Haddin said on the LiSTNR Sport podcast. Why Nitish Reddy's inclusion can lead to India dropping Ravindra Jadeja? Besides, Jadeja, India have a few decisions to make before the second start kicks off on July 2. If Bumrah, according to a report, is rested, who should replace him? What about Shardul Thakur? Will he still be persisted with? The questions become all the more intriguing given the fact that more than capable guys are waiting in the wings, such as Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep, Nitish Reddy and Kuldeep. Shardul's lackluster outing – yes, he picked up two wickets, but it didn't make much of a difference – should pave the way for Reddy, which in turn, could lead to Jadeja's ouster for Kuldeep. "If Reddy plays, then you don't have to play Jadeja and bring the attacking spin option. I think that's one thing they've got to look at, especially away from home. I don't think Jadeja can be effective. Yes, he is good all-rounder and he could play as a second spinner – hold at the other end. But I think they need to be more attacking, be willing to lose a Test match with some inexperienced bowlers but change their mindset at the way they go about it," added Haddin.

"Don't Bowl...": Mohammed Siraj Criticised After India's Loss To England In 1st Test

Former India player Mohammed Kaif has criticised the bowling of Mohammed Siraj after the team suffered a disappointing five-wicket defeat at the hands of England in the first Test in Leeds. The match at Headingly saw the bowlers struggle for wickets as it was a flat surface that was on offer. Despite no help from the pitch, Jasprit Bumrah picked a five-wicket haul during the first innings of India's bowling. Meanwhile, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj picked three and two wickets, respectively but leaked runs. While the economy of Krishna was 6.40 that of Siraj was 4.50. The performance from the Indian bowlers was even poorer when they came in to bowl for the second time in the game. England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett stitched 188-run partnership in chase of 371 runs. England hunted the total down with five wickets in hand. Krishna and Shardul Thakur accounted for two wickets while Ravindra Jadeja picked one. Both Bumrah and Siraj went wicketless despite bowling 19 and 14 overs, respectively. Siraj thus picked only two wickets in the game while bowling 41 overs. "People say Mohammed Siraj tried very hard, bowls with his heart. Sir, don't bowl with your heart, bowl with your mind and with line and length where we can get wickets," said Kaif on his YouTube channel. He also pointed out that Bumrah went wicketless in the final innings of the match as the England batters played defensively against him. "Why didn't Bumrah take wickets in the second innings? It's because the batters played defensively. They attacked Krishna, Shardul, and Siraj. Gameplan becomes very easy when you know Bumrah will bowl 4-5 overs, play him well," Kaif said. Kaif added that had there been Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj alongside Bumrah in the playing XI, they would have won the series for India under Gill's leadership. "In the same bowling lineup, you give him (Gill) Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, and Bumrah. I guarantee you Gill will win this Test series. Those are the bowlers who know how to take 20 wickets," Kaif concluded. After the victory in Leeds, England are 1-0 up in the series of five-Test match. The second game will be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham. It will start on July 2.

Yes, to manage his workload No, he should play Depends on his fitness I have no opinion Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant batted in the nets, while other bowlers, barring Bumrah and Prasidh, went through their bowling routines. The mood in the camp appeared relaxed despite the scrutiny surrounding the team following their Leeds loss. The ace fast bowler bowled 44 overs in the first Test and is expected to feature in only three matches this series to manage his workload. Why Team India will practice behind closed doors in Birmingham, details of bonding session and more With only four days separating the second Test at Edgbaston (July 2–6) and the third at Lord's (July 10–14), indications suggest Birmingham could be the scheduled rest match for Bumrah.
