Business Wire5 hours ago

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Regulatory News:
Veolia (Paris:VIE) announces an unprecedented technological breakthrough in Europe in the fight against per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as "forever chemicals." Developed in the Group's global research centers, the patented Drop® technology enables the removal of these persistent pollutants with an efficiency rate of up to 99.9999% 1 on several targeted PFAS. Veolia is currently deploying the patent across its 20 incineration lines dedicated to hazardous waste in France, Germany, Spain, Poland, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Hungary.
This major innovation addresses one of the most complex environmental challenges of our time: the treatment and disposal of PFAS and waste that may contain PFAS. These substances, used in many industrial and domestic applications since the 1940s, are particularly difficult to treat and degrade due to their carbon-fluorine bonds, which are among the strongest in organic chemistry. Their persistence in the environment and their potential effects on human health make them a concern from both a health and industrial perspective.
To develop this unique solution, Veolia drew on its 50 years of experience in hazardous waste management in more than 40 countries. The Group, which currently holds and files the largest number of patents in the world in the field of hazardous waste treatment, innovates at every stage of the waste treatment process: analysis tailored to the specific characteristics of facilities and their operation, treatment of industrial effluents, thermal treatment, soil and groundwater remediation, and final storage.
'At a time when health expectations are rising in Europe and regulations are becoming stricter, Veolia is now able to offer a wide range of tailor-made treatments, aligned with the principles of resource regeneration and the environmental challenges faced by the industry. Thanks to our patented Drop® technology, we are proud to set a European benchmark by eliminating up to 99.9999% of targeted PFAS. As a European and global leader in hazardous waste treatment, we are fully committed to continuing, as we always have, to innovate in this field, which is as complex as it is crucial for industry and health,' says Catherine Ricou, CEO, Veolia Hazardous Waste Europe
A disruptive innovation capable of eliminating targeted PFAS while preserving the integrity of industrial facilities
The Drop ® technology, thanks to a catalyst added during thermal treatments, accelerates the degradation of PFAS with the aim of mineralizing them, and eliminates the acidic gases formed during the process to transform everything into simple, non-toxic mineral substances. It also drastically reduces problems of corrosion and fouling in boilers to ensure long-term reliability of installations. Its implementation is part of the BeyondPFAS offer launched by Veolia in 2024.
Based on standardized waste containing known concentrations of several target PFAS, which are also considered Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP), introduced into the furnace at over 900°C, Veolia achieved destruction efficiencies of up to 99.9999%, whether the relevant target PFAS were non-polymeric PFAS(notably PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS) or polymeric PFAS.
Through several testing campaigns conducted since 2022, and based on the sampling standards validated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), OTM-45 and OTM-50, which allow for the analysis of semi-volatile and volatile PFAS in air at the outlet of stacks, Veolia has been able to demonstrate the performance of targeted PFAS destruction in dedicated hazardous waste incineration.

OpenAI says China's Zhipu AI gaining ground amid Beijing's global AI push

(Reuters) -OpenAI said on Wednesday its analysts have seen notable progress by Chinese start-up Zhipu AI in securing government contracts across several regions, signaling China's growing momentum in pursuing global AI leadership. Zhipu AI, which is backed by the Chinese Communist Party, aims to "lock Chinese systems and standards into emerging markets before U.S. or European rivals can, while showcasing a 'responsible, transparent and audit-ready' Chinese AI alternative," the ChatGPT maker said in its post. The company provides AI solutions — including sovereign large language model infrastructure and private hardware in partnership with Huawei — to governments and state-owned enterprises in Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kenya. The initiative forms part of China's broader effort to build a self-sufficient, globally competitive AI ecosystem that rivals the United States while reducing reliance on American technology. Zhipu AI, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment, is supported by more than $1.4 billion in state investment and maintains strong ties with the Chinese government and state-owned entities, according to OpenAI. In January, the company was added to the U.S. Commerce Department's export control entity list, barring it from procuring U.S. components. Zhipu AI has been positioning itself among China's leading AI firms alongside DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and Minimax, as well as tech giants ByteDance and Alibaba. OpenAI has also built partnerships and attracted investment across the Middle East and Asia. Its "OpenAI for Countries" initiative helps interested governments develop "sovereign AI capability" in coordination with the U.S. government. The report comes as the U.S. and China engage in intense competition in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, with both nations vying for technological dominance.

Chinese car brands double market share in Europe: JATO Dynamics

Chinese automakers have expanded their presence in the European market, doubling their market share to 5.9% in May 2025, according to JATO Dynamics. This growth is an increase from the 2.9% recorded in May 2024, highlighting the rising influence of Chinese brands in Europe. Europe's new car market saw a 2.5% year-on-year increase in registrations last month, with a total of 1,107,517 new vehicles registered across 28 European markets. This brings the year-to-date figure to 5,535,831 units, representing a 0.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024. JATO Dynamics' global analyst Felipe Munoz said: 'Despite the EU's imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, its car brands continue to post strong growth across Europe. Their momentum is partly due to their decision to push alternative powertrains, such as plug-in hybrids and full hybrids, to the region.' Volkswagen Group, Renault Group, and BMW Group all experienced growth in May, with volume increases of 3.3%, 4.6%, and 6.3%, respectively. MG registered 29,400 vehicles in May, marking a 30% year-on-year increase and surpassing Fiat in year-to-date registrations with 133,400 units compared to Fiat's 125,300. BYD saw a 397% surge in registrations year-on-year, although it dropped 40 units short of Tesla in May after outselling the US brand in April. Other notable performers in May included Skoda, which ranked second in brand rankings, and Dacia, which experienced a rise in volumes. Cupra overtook Seat in year-to-date brand rankings, recording a 30% increase in registrations. In addition, Jaecoo outperformed Honda with 7,449 registrations while Omoda recorded 4,213 units, surpassing Mitsubishi. Leapmotor registered 1,723 units but did not outperform its sister brands from Stellantis such as DS. Furthermore, INEOS was ahead of Jaguar, which registered only 86 units, and while Maserati saw a 40% decline, Lotus and Abarth experienced dips of 48% and 78%, respectively. In model rankings, the Renault Clio led in May with a nearly 12% increase in volume. Although Dacia experienced a 10% sales drop, it clinched second place in model rankings and maintained its lead in year-to-date standings. The Volkswagen Tiguan and Dacia Duster also showed strong results, whereas the Volkswagen Golf and T-Roc saw declines of 18% and 10%, respectively. In May, standout performers included the MG ZS, BMW X1, Seat/Cupra Leon, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Avenger, MG 3, and Mini Cooper. Among recent market entries, the Skoda Elroq topped the charts with 9,200 units registered in May and 24,100 year-to-date. Earlier this month, Startline's June Used Car Tracker revealed that more than seven out of ten UK motorists are open to purchasing vehicles from emerging Chinese car manufacturers. In the survey, 72% of respondents expressed willingness to consider Chinese cars, with BYD emerging as the most recognised brand among potential buyers at 28% awareness, followed by Maxus at 19% and Chery at 14%. NetApp Report Highlights Fierce Competition in Global AI Leadership

San Jose, Calif., United States: NetApp® (NASDAQ: NTAP), the intelligent data infrastructure company, today released its new report, The AI Space Race , examining which countries are leading the fierce global competition to become the world leader in AI innovation. While some countries are further ahead than others, this survey of CEOs and IT executives in the U.S., China, the U.K., and India found that every player has the potential to thrive in the global race for AI dominance. AI is no longer optional for business, and the region that leads the world in AI innovation will be well-positioned to be a technological superpower, and drive potential benefits like economic growth, improved quality of life, and global political influence in the years to come. Successfully fueling AI innovation requires organizations to prepare their data to make it accessible, secure, and scalable—wherever it lives—to produce trusted and valuable outcomes. 'In the 'Space Race' of the 1960's, world powers rushed to accelerate scientific innovation for the sake of national pride. The outcomes of the 'AI Space Race' will shape the world for decades to come,' said Gabie Boko, CMO at NetApp. 'The companies and regions that can get their data ready for AI will be able to generate differentiating business insights and unlock operational efficiencies that launch them ahead of their rivals. Intelligent, scalable, secure data infrastructure is a decisive factor as the global competition drives businesses to solidify their AI ambitions and understand how they translate into a true, lasting advantage.' The AI Space Race is Still Anyone's Game When asked what region is best positioned to lead AI innovation in the long term, respondents from every country overwhelmingly pointed to the U.S. (43 percent). However, everyone sees themselves as AI ready, and every region views themselves as competitive in the global AI innovation race. The report shows that 81 percent of global respondents are currently piloting or scaling AI, while 88 percent view their organization as mostly or completely ready to sustain AI transformation. The massive investment in AI innovation around the globe shows that everyone is working to become the world leader in AI innovation. However, some countries are working harder than others, with respondents from India (29%) and UK (32%) reporting that they feel extra pressure to compete as China and US are seen as clear leaders. With all this fierce rivalry and active investment, the field is wide open for any country to achieve that goal. Driving the global differences in the state of AI innovation are diverging priorities in how it is implemented. Respondents in China put a much greater focus on scalability with 35 percent ranking it as a top capability—11 percent higher than the global average—suggesting a focus on rapid deployment to make an early impact. By contrast, leaders in the U.S., U.K., and India put a greater emphasis on integration with existing systems. This long-term strategy to enable sustained AI growth may result in greater business value in the future, though the short-term approach may drive more immediate results. Aligning Business Ambitions and Technology Reality While organizations are focused on turbocharging AI innovation, CEOs and IT leaders need to be aligned on the state of their technology environments and plans to drive long term success and leadership. In China, the survey indicates there is a critical misalignment between Chinese CEOs and IT leaders on both AI readiness and actual deployment, which could hinder its long-term leadership potential: 92 percent of Chinese CEOs report active AI projects, compared to just 74 percent of Chinese IT leaders. In the United States, alignment is stronger—77 percent of CEOs and 86 percent of IT leaders say the same. Perceptions of AI readiness are also misaligned. While 68 percent of Chinese CEOs consider their organizations AI-ready (versus 62 percent globally), only 58 percent of their IT counterparts agree (versus 72 percent globally). In the United States, CEO and IT readiness is more closely aligned at 60 percent and 61 percent, respectively. These differences suggest that internal alignment—not just ambition—may shape how AI strategies are executed, depending on region and role. However, concerns about the quality of results from AI projects have the potential to slow down innovation if they are not addressed. Globally, 79 percent of respondents reported a fear of broken models and biased insights resulting from poor data and cloud strategies. Businesses that want to tap into the opportunity of AI innovation will need strong data governance strategies to serve as the foundation for their digital transformation. 'One of the most significant success factors in the AI Space Race will be data infrastructure and data management, supported by cloud solutions that are agile, secure and scalable,' said Russell Fishman, Senior Director, Product Management at NetApp. 'Winning organizations will be those that recognize that they require an intelligent data infrastructure in place to ensure unfettered AI innovation. This is critical no matter the company size, industry or geography. As organizations around the world embrace AI at scale, NetApp is there to help them extract maximum value from their data by creating an AI ready data infrastructure that unifies, manages and harnesses their data for optimal AI outcomes.' The AI Space Race is just getting started, but the organizations that can move the fastest will lead in AI innovation. The fierce competition highlighted by this report shows that businesses need to find an edge that will help them leverage AI securely and efficiently to stay a step ahead of their peers, no matter how fast the race evolves. Adopting an intelligent data infrastructure offers organizations unparalleled flexibility and agility to move into the cloud when needed, scale AI workloads seamlessly, reduce costs, and quickly adapt to evolving business needs. As AI increasingly moves from generating content to taking action, businesses need security that starts with the data itself. Only an intelligent data infrastructure delivers a full chain of trust, empowering enterprises to move fast, without compromising control.
