Alfie Burden talks World Seniors redemption, online abuse and Q School bloodbath

Metro21-05-2025

Alife Burden heads to the 'bloodbath' of Q School this week as World Seniors champion, proud of his achievement but having to avoid criticism that has come his way.
The 48-year-old beat Aaron Canavan 8-4 to win the Seniors title earlier this month at the Crucible and has quickly had to turn his attention to Q School, where he will try and regain professional status.
'I'm getting a bit old you know, 20 years ago I would have probably been out for three days,' Burden told Metro of short-lived celebrations. 'I've got a club now, so there's commitments to running that, and I've had to prepare for Q School.'
Burden first turned pro in 1994 and has been on the tour for the vast majority of the time since then, but never been beyond a ranking quarter-final.
A day in the Sheffield sun was a proud moment in a career which he accepts could have been better if he had dedicated himself more.
'It meant a lot to me and to my family,' he said. 'For my children to be there, they've suffered with me through my career. I haven't achieved what I know I could have achieved and I put that in my lap really, I haven't been dedicated enough, I've not lived correctly.
'We are where we are, you can't live in regret, I've had a decent enough career without it being brilliant but I'm proud of it. My kids were proud of me, my family were proud of it and it's something that I'll always remember.
'I'm not stupid enough to think I'm the best over 45 player in the world. Everyone knows that there's players over 45 that still dominate the game. But in the field that was in front of me I was the best player. I'm always one to sort of knock myself and maybe I should take a bit of credit rather than try and downplay it.'
Burden lost in the final of the Seniors to Jimmy White in 2023, feeling like his attitude let him down in defeat to his old pal, the Whirlwind.
He is glad to gain some redemption by winning this year, but has been hit with social media abuse, which he feels comes from a place of ignorance.
'In 2023 I let myself down in different ways in the final,' he said. 'I always have that regret but I felt I put a few wrongs right this year and I'm proud that.
'I take a lot of a stick on social media. In the middle of the tournament I started flicking on a few of the World Senior feeds and I see I was getting a lot of abuse. People who don't know me just saying nasty stuff, so I stopped looking at that because I'm thinking there's no value.
'What I did take from it is that in the flesh people do enjoy watching me play. I think I play a nice brand of snooker and the crowd really enjoyed it and only had good things to say.
'People shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I'm a bit loud and brash at times but that's just me, anyone who knows knows me knows what I'm all about. You read some of this stuff online and it's not pleasant.
'I've chosen to stop reading that sort of stuff, I think that's the right thing to do.'
Burden now heads to Leicester looking to come through Q School for a third time and fulfil an ambition of being a pro at 50 years old.
'I thought that would have been a good good feat, being on tour at 50,' he said. 'I'm still able to reach that goal by getting through Q School.
'But it is a real bloodbath up there. Listen, I'm not saying everyone can get through because they can't, most of them ain't good enough and that's the brutal truth, but there's probably 30 players that you know have got a good chance of getting through and only eight of them will.
'I'm not one to really give it the big one, but getting through twice is very impressive because I challenge anyone, no matter who you are, to go there and get through. It's not an easy format and anyone can beat you in a best of seven.
'I'm definitely hitting the ball well, there's no doubt about that and obviously I'm going there full of confidence there's no one no one I won't fancy beating.'

Wirtz clashes with Fernandes in Germany's Nations League loss to Portugal

Florian Wirtz gave Liverpool supporters a glimpse of what they can expect as he went toe to toe with Bruno Fernandes in Germany's Nations League semi-final defeat to Portugal. Germany had looked to be heading for this year's final after Wirtz headed Julian Nagelsmann's men in front from close range just three minutes into the second half in Munich. But Francisco Conceicao made an immediate impact after coming off the bench for the visitors, firing a sensational 25-yard effort beyond Marc-Andre ter Stegen to equalise in the 63rd minute. With the momentum firmly in their favour, Portugal completed the turnaround just five minutes later as Cristiano Ronaldo swept home Nuno Mendes' pinpoint cross to take the lead – his 137th goal in international football. Roberto Martinez's side preserved their narrow advantage at the Allianz Arena to advance through, setting up a clash against France or the reigning champions Spain on Sunday. Wirtz – who is reportedly on his way to Liverpool this summer – was arguably Germany's brightest spark on the night, causing Portugal's defenders problems throughout with his range of passing and incisive running. But the attacking midfielder showed another side to him in the second period as he left his mark with a mistimed challenge on the ankle of Manchester United captain Fernandes. The tackle left Fernandes writhing around in pain on the turf and the midfielder eventually returned to his feet after a long break in play. More Trending But the pair were not done there… with six minutes remaining of normal time, Wirtz appeared to stand on Bernardo Silva's boot during a coming together. When Wirtz attempted to lift Silva up from the ground, Ruben Dias and Fernandes both took exception and were seen shoving the Bayer Leverkusen star away from their fellow countryman. The altercation, which threatened to escalate into an all-out brawl, saw referee Slavko Vincic hand out bookings to Wirtz and second-half substitute Niclas Fullkrug. More to follow. Who is Lois Boisson? World No.361 who has reached French Open semi-finals

Lois Boisson continued her fairytale run at Roland-Garros on Wednesday with the French world No.361 now just one win away from the 2025 final. The 22-year-old stunned Mirra Andreeva 7-6 6-3 in last eight to become the first player in the Open Era to reach the semi-finals of the French Open women's singles event as a wildcard. Little was known about Boisson before this year's Grand Slam in Paris – but after knocking out three seeded stars – she's attracting plenty of attention. Ahead of Boisson's semi-final showdown against American second-seed Coco Gauff, here's everything you need to know about the Frenchwoman… Boisson made her WTA Tour debut at the Lyon Open in 2021, playing as a wildcard in the doubles tournament alongside Juline Fayard. The following year, Boisson landed her first singles title on the ITF Circuit in Dijon. After a second ITF title in 2023 in Le Havre, Boisson hit serious form in March 2024 by landing three ITF titles in the space of just one month. That saw Boisson jump up a level to play on the WTA Challenger Tour and she landed a clay-court title at the Open de Saint-Malo in May 2024. Boisson was set to receive a wildcard for her major main draw debut at the 2024 French Open – but injured her left knee – tearing her ACL just a week before the event. It meant Boisson had to wait until the 2025 French Open – where she has now made an incredible and historic run to the semi-finals in Paris. First round – 24th-seed Elise Mertens – 24th-seed Elise Mertens Second round – Anhelina Kalinina – Anhelina Kalinina Third round – Elsa Jacquemot – Elsa Jacquemot Fourth round – Third-seed Jessica Pegula – Third-seed Jessica Pegula Quarter-final – Sixth-seed Mirra Andreeva Boisson is set for the biggest ranking jump from a Grand Slam run since British star Emma Raducanu won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier. She was the world No.361 heading into Roland-Garros – but has now earned a huge 780 points for reaching the last four – with a projected new career-high ranking of world No.65. Analysis from Metro's dedicated tennis reporter Liam Grace… At the age of just 22, Boisson is already a very impressive technical player, which is way she's so well suited to the clay surface. She can generate lots of spin on her forehand shots which has caused her opponents all kinds of problems. Her movement is unbelievably good and her sliced backhand also makes her a huge threat. She's able to hit aces, too. Tennis experts have been left blown away by Boisson's performances at this year's French Open. 'She has the whole game,' Mats Wilander told TNT Sports. 'So you wonder whether it's just injury that's kept her out of it or if it's a mental thing. 'For me, she's a top-20 player on any surface with that kind of game.' More Trending Former British No.1 Tim Henman added: 'It's been an incredible story this fortnight. 'ACL injury last year, out of the equation and the game for nine months. The way she's come through and backed up the [Jessica] Pegula victory. 'I thought emotionally and technically she wasn't going to get close to winning this match [against Andreeva], but she was just incredible. 'The way that she competed, three sets, over two hours. It was a phenomenal effort, mentally and physically.' John Obi Mikel backs Chelsea to sign two Man Utd stars and build best young team

John Obi Mikel would welcome the arrivals of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho at Chelsea to join the Blues' army of young stars. Chelsea's first season under Enzo Maresca ended in success, securing Champions League qualification through a fourth-place finish and bagging the Europa Conference League trophy to boot. Youth shone through with Chelsea officially the youngest team in Premier League history – the average age of their starting XIs during the course of the campaign was just 24 years and 36 days. There will be more new kids on the block in the coming weeks. Liam Delap is poised to arrive from Ipswich Town and will be joined by Kendry Paez and Estevao Willian, two of the brightest young talents in South American football. Delap is the old man of that group at the ripe old age of 22 with Geovany Quenda also set to arrive from Sporting CP next year. He is expected to arrive in time to play a part in Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign, kicking off on 16 June against Los Angeles FC with Mikel part of DAZN's broadcast team leading coverage for the revamped competition. Chelsea explored a move for Garnacho in January and have also been credited with interest in another of their burgeoning stars in Mainoo. Both could be available this summer, although there is a growing sense the England international will remain in Manchester. Amid a backdrop of chaos at Old Trafford this season, Mainoo has struggled to reach the heights of his breakout campaign under Erik ten Hag. Garnacho meanwhile may have sealed his own fate with his public criticism of Ruben Amorim that followed the Europa League final. Garnacho and Mainoo will improve Chelsea despite recent struggles With Chelsea a blossoming environment for youngsters, former Blues star Mikel is confident both players would thrive at Chelsea as they look to take the next step and challenge for the Premier League and Champions League next season. 'I like both of these players,' Mikel told Metro. 'I have no idea what the issue is with Garnacho and Ruben Amorim because for me he is one of the best players at Man United. The squad is what it is, and you want to get rid of Garnacho. Really? I can't see the sense in that because every time he plays he is a threat. 'The issue is probably the defensive side of his game but that is something you have to work with a young player on. To change their mentality to make sure their defensive responsibilities are taken seriously. 'With Kobbie Mainoo, maybe they feel they need to cash in on him to raise the funds. Maybe he did not have the season we all expected from him last season, he looked a shadow of the player he was when he first burst onto the scene. Again, I have no idea what the issue has been. The system, the manager? Is he not happy with the environment at the football club? 'There are so many factors you have to look at right now with Manchester United. If those are two players Chelsea want, I will take those two, definitely. They can only come in and improve us as a football club. I know if they come in, they will improve us as a team.' 'We have a great squad, a young team but a great squad, a team that has just tasted what it is like to win a trophy,' Mikel continued. 'The environment is so important when you have all these youngsters. It is not like someone is a superstar at this point. They are all young, there shouldn't be any ego. For them, it's a brilliant environment to develop. 'But you need a strong manager with a strong character that can deal with them and put them in their place when they are not doing things right. Maybe give them a little kick in the backside and tell them they have to wake up. Maresca has been that guy for me.' Chelsea saw off interest from a long list of teams to agree a deal with Delap, who will join the club for a modest fee of £30million. His arrival at Chelsea effectively signals an end to the club's interest in Victor Osimhen – a player Mikel has been desperate to see join his old side. Nicolas Jackson has been Maresca's main man up top, scoring 30 goals across his two seasons in west London. Mikel, who spent 11 years at Stamford Bridge, has often been accused of being the Senegal international's biggest critics, questioning his finishing ability in the past with Jackson telling the ex-midfielder to 'shut his mouth' last summer. But the former Blues star says his criticism is constructive. While Osimhen now appears to be off the table, he believes the presence of Delap is ideal to create a competitive culture at the focal point of Maresca's attack – one that will pay off for all involved. 'A lot of people think I am harsh on Jackson. I'm not!' Mikel said. 'What I have said is healthy competition is so important at the football club. In my days, we had Didier Drogba competing with Shevchenko, Fernando Torres, Nicolas Anelka. We had top strikers coming to the club to create that competitive environment. Which Drogba embraced. He knew he was the guy and he would eventually come out on top which he did. 'So I have always said that about Jackson, I have not tried to push him out of the door because he is a talent. He has shown he can play at this level but he does need someone to come in and push him, to create that competitive environment and I am sure the club has done that with Delap. More Trending 'For him to choose to come to Chelsea instead of Man United or Arsenal, it does show how strong we are right now. He has decided to come to a club that wins trophies and Chelsea right now are back doing that. He is young, he can only get better. I hope he can hit the ground running. Everyone knows who I wanted to come into the club but Chelsea decided to go another direction. Which is fine, I hope it works out for Delap and the club. We have to support him.'
