Amazon Seized 15 Million Counterfeit Products in 2024

Amazon continued its crusade against counterfeits in 2024, its latest Brand Protection Report shows.
According to the data, Amazon pinpointed and disposed of more than 15 million counterfeit products across the globe last year, which it contends prevent consumer harm or continued resale of such products on other platforms.

The e-commerce behemoth uses artificial intelligence and other technology to monitor the listings on its platform for similarities to a brand's logo, trademarks and name—and to determine if significant changes are made repeatedly to a listing, whether in photos, item name or otherwise.
That process encompasses a variety of tools and partnerships that Amazon has cultivated in recent years. And, per the company, its efforts have paid off; it stated that, in 2024, it proactively caught 99 percent of potentially infringing listings before brands ever had to flag items for removal.
The company has seen growing interest and involvement in its counterfeit-related programs, which see participants from a slew of industries, including fashion, apparel and footwear, where counterfeits have long proven to be an especially touchy subject.
Zach Toczyński, senior director of global brand protection for Levi Strauss & Co., said the company has held a 'long-term partnership' with Amazon on brand protection, which has helped proactively protect the various brands under its umbrella.
'We commend Amazon for their dedication and the excellent results we've achieved together. This partnership is a key component of our global brand protection strategy, and we look forward to continuing our work together in the years to come,' Toczyński said in a statement.
2024 Corsearch data estimated that, in 2023, counterfeit movement accounted for 3.3 percent of all global trade and projected that, by 2030, that would increase to 5 percent.
And brands and retailers aren't taking the counterfeiting lying down; many have filed lawsuits against counterfeit sellers on various marketplaces, and the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA)—in tandem with more than a dozen other industry interest groups—urged President Donald Trump to take action on counterfeit items within his first 100 days as president. Should he do so, it could be indicative that he feels the issue is one of serious global importance for industry.
In the meantime, private industry, Amazon included, has chosen to target the proliferation of counterfeits on its own. In 2020, Amazon launched its Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU), which bridges private industry, customs agencies, law enforcement professionals and more to take action against bad actors on Amazon. Since its launch, the CCU has brought legal action against or referred to law enforcement more than 24,000 bad actors, Amazon said. Last year, the CCU increased its connection with Chinese law enforcement agencies and brands, which Amazon said was directly correlated to more than 60 raids, which identified over 100 bad actors.
'This collaboration resulted in numerous criminal convictions, including fines and prison sentences,' Amazon said in the report.
The company further noted that, through its collaboration with U.S. and Japanese customs, it was able to halt at least 90,000 counterfeit items from reaching their destination, preemptively removing them from the supply chain before they could negatively impact a consumer.
The company said it recognizes that it has yet more work to do in preventing fakes and bad actors from selling on its platform, but Dharmesh M. Mehta, vice president of worldwide selling partner services for Amazon, said he's excited about what the company achieved last year.'We understand that customer trust is difficult to earn and easy to lose, which is why trust is at the foundation of the relationships we build and the products and services we invent on behalf of our customers, brands, and selling partners,' Mehta said in a statement. 'We are proud of the progress we have made in preventing counterfeits within the Amazon store. This has required significant innovation and perseverance, and it would not be possible without the partnerships we have been able to build with brands, associations, policymakers, law enforcement, and others. While we believe we have made a great deal of progress, we remain committed to continued innovation and progress, and we will not rest until we drive counterfeits to zero.'

Business Leaders Called To Align Tech Decisions With Corporate Values

Signs point to an emerging, if informal, social contact on AI deployment. With the rapid rollout of AI, corporate leaders are increasingly being called to consider the proper alignment between technology strategies and organizational purposes and values. It's a call that speaks to an informal, yet important 'social license' between companies and their stakeholders on the use of technology, and its impact on labor, among other interests. And it's a call that's been reflected in recent comments from influential religious, legal and business leaders, including Pope Leo XIV, Amazon CEO Andrew Jassy, and Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz Founding Partner Martin Lipton. Attention to this informal social license arose from President Joseph Biden's 2023 Executive Order on the 'Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.' This (now revoked) Executive Order identified eight specific principles on which AI development should be guided, including a commitment to supporting American workers and preventing 'harmful labor-force disruptions'. The National Association of Corporate Directors ('NACD') indirectly acknowledged the AI social license in its 2024 Blue Ribbon Commission Report, 'Technology Leadership in the Boardroom: Driving Trust and Value.' The Report called upon boards to 'move fast and be bold' with respect to AI deployment, while simultaneously acting as a 'guardrail to uphold organizational values and protect stakeholders' interests'. In a May 12, 2025, address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo spoke broadly about the social concerns with AI, focusing particularly on what he described as the challenges to the defense of human dignity, justice and labor that arise from 'developments in the field of artificial intelligence.' A recent article in The Wall Street Journal chronicled the long-running dialogue between the Vatican and Silicon Valley on the ethical implications of AI. Indeed, on June 17, Pope Leo delivered a written message to a two-day international conference in Rome focusing on AI, ethics and corporate governance. In his message, the Pope urged AI developers to evaluate its implications in the context of the 'integral development of the human person and society…taking into account the well-being of the human person not only materially, but also intellectually and spiritually…'. This 'alignment' concern was underscored by a recent post by the highly regarded Mr. Lipton, encouraging corporate boards to maintain their organizational values while pursuing value through AI. 'Boards should consider in a balanced manner the effect of technological adoptions on important constituencies, including employees and communities, as opposed to myopically seeking immediate expense-line efficiencies at any cost.' There certainly is little question that for many companies, generative AI is likely to have a disruptive impact on labor; that the efficiency gains expected from AI implementation could result in a reduced or dramatically altered workforce. The related question is the extent to which 'corporate values' should encompass a response to tech-driven labor disruption. Note in this regard the long-standing position of NACD is that a positive workforce culture is a significant corporate asset. A recent memo from Amazon CEO Andrew Jassy offers a positive example of how to address the strategy/values alignment challenge ‒ by being transparent with employees, well in advance, about the coming transformation and its impact on the workforce, and by offering practical suggestions on how employees can best prepare for it: Those who embrace this change, become conversant in AI, help us build and improve our AI capabilities internally and deliver for customers, will be well-positioned to have high impact and help us reinvent the company. As boards work with management to deploy AI, they should be in regular conversation on which valued-centered decisions the board must be informed, and on which such decisions they may be asked to decide, or merely advise. Such a dialogue is likely to enhance the reflection on corporate purposes and values within decisions regarding strategy and technology. Of course, that incorporation can come in many different ways and from many different directions; the Amazon example being one of them. There are no established guidelines on how leadership might approach the strategy/values alignment discussion. But there is a growing recognition that corporate values must be accommodated in some manner into the AI decision-making. Most likely, effective alignment will balance the inevitability of AI—driven workforce impact with initiatives that advance employee well-being and 'positively augment human work,' including initiatives that minimize job-displacement risks and maximize career opportunities related to AI. For as the NACD suggests, the ultimate AI deployment message to the board is that '[I]t's about what you can do, but also what you should do.'

(Reuters) -Microsoft's next-generation Maia AI chip is facing a delay of at least six months, pushing its mass production to 2026 from 2025, The Information reported on Friday, citing three people involved in the effort. When the chip, code-named Braga, goes into production, it is expected to fall well short of the performance of Nvidia's Blackwell chip that was released late last year, the report said. Microsoft had hoped to use the Braga chip in its data centers this year, the report said, adding that unanticipated changes to its design, staffing constraints and high turnover were contributing to the delay. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Like its Big Tech peers, Microsoft has focused heavily on developing custom processors for artificial intelligence operations and general purpose applications, a move that would help reduce the tech giant's reliance on pricey Nvidia chips. Cloud rivals Amazon and Alphabet's Google have both raced to develop chips in-house, customized for their specific needs with the goal of improving performance and reducing costs. Microsoft had introduced the Maia chip in November 2023, but has lagged its peers in ramping it up to scale. Google, meanwhile, has seen success with its custom AI chips - called Tensor Processing Units - and in April unveiled its seventh-generation AI chip designed to speed the performance of AI applications. Amazon in December also unveiled its next-generation AI chip Trainium3 that is set to be released late this year.
