Bueckers leads Wings past the Sun for 1st win of season

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Paige Bueckers had a triumphant return to Connecticut by scoring a career-best 21 points as Dallas won its first game of the season, beating the Sun 109-87 on Tuesday night.
Bueckers, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, shot 8 for 10 from the field and finished with seven assists and five rebounds.
Bueckers remained perfect at Mohegan Sun Arena, where the Sun play their home games. She went 15-0 at the building in college while playing for UConn, including winning four Big East championships with the Huskies. Many of her former teammates were in attendance Tuesday night.
She received a loud ovation from the sellout crowd when introduced before the game, and many fans were wearing her No. 5 jersey from UConn and Dallas.
LIBERTY 95, VALKYRIES 67
NEW YORK (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 24 points, Jonquel Jones added 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and New York never trailed in a win over Golden State.
The defending WNBA champion, New York (4-0) has won eight consecutive regular-season games.
Kayla Thornton, who was selected by the Valkyries in December's expansion draft, and Veronica Burton scored 13 points apiece to lead Golden State and Temi Fagbenle added 11. Thornton spent the last two seasons with the Liberty.
Marine Johannes scored 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range for the Liberty. Natasha Cloud had 10 of New York's season-high 30 assists.
LYNX 82, STORM 77
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Courtney Williams scored 23 points, Napheesa Collier had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Minnesota held on to beat Seattle in a matchup of early season leaders in the Western Conference.
The Lynx extended their season-opening winning streak to five games and welcomed the return of Kayla McBride, who missed the first four games for personal reasons.
Minnesota led by double digits early before Seattle's Dominique Malonga scored to open the fourth quarter and pulled the Storm within 54-53. The Lynx maintained their lead and consecutive 3-pointers by Williams and Alanna Smith made it 70-64 near the four-minute mark.
Williams hit a couple of pull-up jumpers for a 76-69 lead with two minutes left.
Seattle scored the next four points, and it was 76-73 with 27 seconds remaining. McBride added four free throws and Minnesota led 80-74 with 14 seconds remaining. Erica Wheeler hit a 3 for Seattle, Collier added two more free throws for the Lynx, and the Storm turned it over on their final possession.

Bears QB Caleb Williams Receives Major Concern From Former GM

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Bears are entering year two with Caleb Williams as their franchise quarterback. In his rookie season, Williams looked good, but there is a lot of work to be done for him to become the kind of quarterback they drafted him to be. Williams has a ton of talent on the field, but there are questions about his traits off the field. Most notably, his discipline has been called into question on multiple occasions. Add in the fact that a new reported showed Williams originally didn't want to play for the Bears and things have gotten even more interesting entering the 2025 season. Read more: Bears Again Connected to Potential Major Late-Free Agency Move Mike Tannenbaum spoke out about Williams in a segment on "Get Up." The words that he shared were not what Chicago fans will want to hear. He's not sold on the young quarterback. "I am not (convinced about Williams in Chicago)," Tannenbaum said. "I worked with Ben Johnson in Miami, the new head coach of the Bears. He is going to be a rule-based, disciplined play-caller and coach. When you have 68 sacks? Look, the Bears were not great in coaching, not great in personnel last year, but you have to bear some of that responsibility." He continued on, revealing his biggest concern about Williams. "No team has done more for their quarterback in this offseason than the Bears. We'll see if he'll get better, but I am concerned by his lack of his discipline in his fundamentals, that's not going to allow him to maximize his potential." During the 2024 NFL season as a rookie, Williams played in all 17 regular season games. He completed 62.5 percent of his pass attempts for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while rushing for 489 yards. As Tannenbaum mentioned, Williams was sacked 68 times in year one. That led to the Bears going out and trading for both Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson, while also signing Drew Dalman in free agency. Now, it's up to the young quarterback to prove that he can become an NFL franchise quarterback for real. If the team plays up to its full potential, the Bears could make the playoffs. Those hopes will rely on what kind of development Williams can make this offseason. Hopefully, he'll come into the 2025 season improved from last year and start putting the doubts to bed. French Open: Jannik Sinner drops just 3 games to extend Grand Slam unbeaten run to 17 matches

PARIS (AP) — When Jannik Sinner's opponent in the French Open's third round finally won a single game Saturday, the Court Suzanne-Lenglen crowd responded with a standing ovation. Sinner was simply too good on this day, extending his Grand Slam winning streak to 17 matches and looking very much like the No. 1-ranked man. Sinner dominated Jiri Lehecka 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 in just 1 hour, 34 minutes, the quickest men's match at Roland-Garros this year and, measured by games lost, the most lopsided victory at a major tournament of Sinner's career. 'We try to improve,' Sinner said. 'Today, I don't think there are many things I can improve.' Can say that again. Check out some of the numbers: Sinner delivered 31 winners and made only nine unforced errors. He accumulated 18 break points, converting seven, and faced just one, which he saved. The first 11 games went Sinner's way. When Sinner missed a return wide, making the score 6-0, 5-1 after 55 minutes of action, Lehecka raised his arm and pumped his fist in a bit of sarcastic celebration. The fans went wild, rising out of their seats and clapping and shouting, eliciting a smile from Lehecka. Make no mistake, though. Lehecka is no also-ran. The 23-year-old from the Czech Republic is ranked 34th and has been a Grand Slam quarterfinalist. But he was completely overmatched by Sinner, who has won the past two major championships — at the U.S. Open in September and the Australian Open in January — and is now the owner of an unbeaten run at the sport's most important tournaments that's been surpassed this century only by a trio of guys by the names of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Sinner's bid for a first French Open title, and fourth Slam trophy overall, will continue Monday, when he'll face No. 17 Andrey Rublev for a quarterfinal berth. Rublev advanced when his opponent, No. 14 Arthur Fils, withdrew from the tournament because a stress fracture in his lower back . What else happened at the French Open on Saturday? Jessica Pegula , the No. 3-seeded American who was the runner-up at the U.S. Open, came back to eliminate 2019 French Open finalist and 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and reach the fourth round. No. 6 Mirra Andreeva , an 18-year-old Russian who reached the semifinals a year ago, advanced to a fourth-round showdown against No. 17 Daria Kasatkina. American qualifier Ethan Quinn, the 2023 NCAA champion for the University of Georgia, played his second consecutive five-setter and was beaten by Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4. Griekspoor came into the day 0-4 in third-round matches at majors. Who is on the schedule at Roland-Garros on Sunday? No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and the two defending champions, Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz , are all scheduled to appear in the fourth round Sunday. There are three American men in Week 2 in Paris for the first time since 1995, and all are in action: No. 12 Tommy Paul, No. 13 Ben Shelton and No. 15 Frances Tiafoe. Shelton faces Alcaraz, Paul goes up against No. 25 Alexei Popyrin, and Tiafoe meets Daniel Altmaier. ___ AP tennis:

Jermall Charlo Vs. Thomas LaManna: Odds, Records, Prediction

In the past few years, Jermall Charlo has fought against more than just 160-pound foes in the ring. He's also battled against personal problems out of the ring, including mental health and legal issues, that he thinks have hampered his career. But he's looking to get himself back into boxing fans' conscience on Saturday when he takes on Thomas LaManna. Here's everything you need to know about Jermall Charlo vs. Thomas LaManna, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win. Since defending his middleweight title vs. Juan Macias Montiel four years ago, Charlo has only fought once (a solid decision win vs. Jose Benavidez Jr. at super middleweight in 2023), but he's been arrested at least three times since then and has been charged with DUI stemming from an alleged car accident in May 2024. He also told the New York Post in 2023 that he was dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues. 'Depression, self conflation, going from hot to cold really fast is shocking to you,' Charlo told the Post. 'Dealing with all kinds of cases of [being] bipolar, being by yourself, thinking that you shutting the world out is going to help you . . . It just feels like everybody is against you, I don't care if you're in the Uber, a cab, wherever, everybody is just against you. Why I felt like this, [I don't know]. I couldn't tell that some people weren't against me, it was just that at the moment it's the way you're feeling and I turned my back against pretty much the world. I just had to start getting help with it and it made me a lot better.' Now, nearly two years later, Charlo, at 168 pounds, is trying to get back on track in a new weight division. 'I just miss boxing, period,' he said. 'I miss getting up and just focusing on boxing, and I'm back to doing that at the highest level. The sky's the limit for me at this weight. I'm sparring bigger guys and I can lift more now. I'm squatting more than I ever did and using my body more than I ever did. I feel like this is the division I'm going to end my career in. You're going to see me go out and be more explosive than you've ever seen me before in my life.' If he looks impressive on Saturday, he potentially could face Caleb Plant, assuming he beats Amando Resindez in the main event of the card. But LaManna wants to ruin Charlo's plans. 'I've been in this same seat before, and I came up short when I fought Erislandy Lara,' LaManna said. 'I never want to go through that again. It messed me up. We all know what the task at hand is, and we're going to give this my best shot. I'm going to give it my all. We're going to upset the apple cart.' Here's more info on the Jermall Charlo vs. Thomas LaManna showdown that U.S. viewers can watch on Amazon Video (free with Prime subscription) beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday. Despite Charlo's absence from the ring, that hasn't stopped the oddsmakers from making him a heavy favorite. Entering his fight, Charlo is the -1600 favorite (bet $1,600 to win $100), while LaManna is the +850 underdog (win $850 on a $100 wager). Want more value for your money? I'd go with Charlo winning by decision at +140. If you were looking for a fun parlay for this weekend's action of boxing (and this is only for entertainment purposes), I might take Charlo beating LaManna by decision at+140, Caleb Plant to beat Armando Residenz by decision at +210 and Yoenli Hernandez to beat Kyrone Davis at -650. If all those hit, you'd win $758 on a $100 wager. Though we haven't seen Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) in the ring since November 2023, he remains undefeated, and he probably shouldn't have too many struggles winning on Saturday. It's been nearly a decade since two of the best victories of his careers (vs. Austin Trout and Julian Williams) and a half-decade since decisively beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko, but he still showed plenty of skills in his last fight, nearly shutting out Jose Benavidez Jr. Say this for LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs): he's on a nine-fight winning streak after getting knocked out in the first round by Erislandy Lara in 2021. But his level of opponent in the past four years hasn't been stellar, and there isn't much reason to think he can pull off an upset against Charlo, especially if Charlo is still a reasonably elite fighter. Despite his well-documented issues, Charlo is still an impressive (and undefeated) fighter. It's hard to imagine that, at the age of 35 and with his inactivity, he's still in the prime of his career. But even a well-worn/older version of Charlo will still be too much for LaManna to handle. Say Charlo by decision, somewhere in the 98-92 range.
