Jakub Dobes Got An Interesting Gift Following Ovechkin's Record

Yahoo08-04-2025

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the Washington Capitals' captain and super sniper, Alexander Ovechkin, broke Wayne Gretzky's goal-scoring record this weekend when he beat countryman Ilya Sorokin on a power play. A celebration followed on the ice, but American beer giant Budweiser had another celebration in mind.

In a fantastic marketing coup, the company produced limited edition beer cans 0 of 895 and sent one to each of the 28 goalies who have faced the Great Eight without surrendering a goal. Montreal Canadiens' backup, Jakub Dobes, made the list, alongside three former Habs goaltenders, Jocelyn Thibault, David Aebischer, and Mike Condon.
Dobes only faced Ovechkin once and turned aside his only shot in a 3-2 Canadiens win over the Capitals in January.
Meanwhile, Thibault, who landed in Montreal in the much-maligned Patrick Roy trade alongside Martin Rucinsky and Andrei Kovalenko, faced five Ovechkin shots without being beaten.
As for Aebischer, who was acquired in a goalie swap with the Colorado Avalanche that saw Jose Theodore head to Denver and spent parts of two seasons in Montreal, he faced two Ovechkin shots and stopped them both.

Finally, Mike Condon, who played 55 games with the Canadiens and was parachuted into the number one role because of a knee injury sustained by Carey Price in 2015-16, faced the second-highest shot total without being beaten with 18.
It will be interesting to see if anyone ever beats Ovechkin's goal today. He still has another contract year to improve his 895 total. To put things into perspective, the best goal scorer in Canadiens history, Maurice Richard, scored 544 goals, and the highest goal total for an active player not named Ovechkin belongs to Sidney Crosby, with 622 goals. Congratulations on the record Ovi and cheers!

Summer McIntosh breaks world record in 200m individual medley

Summer McIntosh broke the world record in the 200m individual medley, giving her the fastest time in history in three different long course swimming events. McIntosh, a triple 2024 Olympic gold medalist, clocked 2 minutes, 5.70 seconds on Monday at the Canadian trials for the World Championships in Singapore in July and August. She broke the world record of 2:06.12 set by Hungarian Katinka Hosszu at the 2015 World Championships, the third-longest standing world record in women's long course (50-meter pool) swimming. McIntosh, 18, was previously the third-fastest 200m IMer in history thanks to her 2:06.56 to win Paris Olympic gold. With Monday's time, she passed American Ariana Kukors, who swam 2:06.15 at the 2009 Worlds, and Hosszu. McIntosh also owns world records in the 400m IM (set in 2024) and the 400m freestyle (reclaimed from Australian Ariarne Titmus last Saturday). On Sunday, she swam the third-fastest 800m free in history, trailing only Katie Ledecky's top two times. She also owns the second-fastest time in history in the 200m butterfly. For this season's worlds, McIntosh said she plans to swim five individual events: her three Olympic gold-medal events — both IMs, 200m fly — plus the 400m free and one of the 200m free, 200m backstroke or 800m free. Michael Phelps is the only swimmer to win five individual golds at a single worlds, doing so in 2007 to set the table for repeating the feat at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he also won three relay golds for eight total. Saskatchewan Roughriders sign all-star running back Ka'Deem Carey

REGINA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed all-star running back Ka'Deem Carey, the CFL club announced Monday. Carey was a CFL East all-star with Toronto last season after rushing for a team-high 1,060 yards with seven touchdowns. He had 79 yards and a TD in the Argonauts' 41-24 Grey Cup victory over Winnipeg. However, he was among Toronto's final round of cuts before the start of the season. The move comes after Riders running back A.J. Ouellette left Saskatchewan's 31-26 season-opening win over Ottawa on Thursday with a suspected head injury. Before joining Toronto, Carey spent four seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. He helped the Stamps win a Grey Cup as a rookie in 2018 and led the CFL in rushing in both 2021 and 2022, earning a CFL all-star nod in the latter season. Over 62 regular-season games, the 32-year-old from Tucson, Ariz., has totalled 3,915 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. The Roughriders also added American linebacker Braxton Hill and American offensive lineman Darius Washington. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 9, 2025.

T.J. Oshie, US Olympic star in Sochi and Capitals Stanley Cup champion, announces he's retiring

WASHINGTON (AP) — T.J. Oshie, who scored four shootout goals for the U.S. to beat host Russia at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and helped the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup in 2018, announced Monday he is retiring after playing 16 NHL seasons. Oshie shared his news in front of hundreds of fans gathered at the fountains at Washington Harbour in Georgetown, seven years to the day of one of the most memorable Cup celebrations in hockey history when he and several teammates jumped into the fountains and took a dip. The announcement had been expected for quite some time, with Oshie's contract expiring. The 38-year-old did not play this past season because of a nagging back injury that sidelined him off and on, going on long-term injured reserve instead. 'I would like to thank the Washington Capitals and the St. Louis Blues for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love, all of my teammates who battled with me every night, my coaches who challenged me to be better every day and the athletic trainers and equipment staff who got me ready to play,' Oshie said in a news release sent out by the NHLPA. Oshie said in the spring of 2024 he would only return to the Capitals if he found a permanent solution or fix to the issue. His final game was at home on April 28 last year against the New York Rangers, a 4-2 loss in the first round that eliminated Washington in a sweep. Taken 24th in the 2005 draft by St. Louis, Oshie played 1,116 regular-season and playoff games in the league with the Blues and Capitals since making his debut in 2008. He had 336 goals and 428 assists for 764 points, including 29 goals during Washington's Cup run. Oshie made an international name for himself at the Olympics, earning the nickname 'T.J. Sochi' for going 4 for 6 in shootout attempts against Sergei Bobrovsky during the U.S.-Russia preliminary round game in that tournament. In the NHL, his biggest impact came after he was traded from the Blues to the Capitals in 2015. Oshie took on an immediate leadership role as a key addition to the core of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson, helping the team make the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons in the nation's capitals. ___
