Woodford Reserve Blends Art And Bourbon For The Kentucky Derby

Forbes22-04-2025

Woodford Reserve tapped Humberto Lahera, a Kentucky-based artist originally from Cuba, for the art ... More featured on the 2025 commemorative Kentucky Derby bottle.
Horses will have raced at the Kentucky Derby for 151 consecutive years after the next crop of three-year-old thoroughbreds meet at Churchill Downs on May 3. Sponsor Woodford Reserve has its own tradition to commemorate the occasion, though it only goes back a mere 26 years.
Beginning in 1999, the bourbon brand has sold commemorative Kentucky Derby bottles each year, often working with new artists to capture the tradition and thrill of the event that's been called 'the most exciting two minutes in sports.'
The 2025 commemorative bottle features the artwork of painter Humberto Lahera, whose vividly colored painting 'Carrera Dinamica,' which translates to 'dynamic race,' evokes the fluid motion of the Kentucky Derby.
Lahera tells me during a virtual interview that he's been an artist all his life, drawing on the walls of his childhood home by the age of three, painting portraits from what he saw on television, and later reproducing classic works like Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa.' His mother encouraged his interest in art and later, Lahera was only one of eight students admitted to Cuba's prestigious El Alba Academy of Fine Arts. He relocated to the U.S. in 2022 and his work has been exhibited in private galleries and institutions including Louisville Metro Hall and the Governor's Derby Exhibit.
'I have had a natural talent since I was born,' says Lahera of his lifelong interest in art.

Shortly after moving stateside, Lahera says he worked to integrate himself into the Kentucky community and the regional art museum and gallery scene. Within just a couple years, he received a call from Brown-Forman, the parent company of Woodford Reserve, who shared that he was a finalist for the Kentucky Derby commemorative bottle. After he was selected for the project, Lahera visited the distillery to meet with the team. The initial concept he sent to the Woodford Reserve team was ultimately approved for the bottle.
'Everybody wants to have the American dream,' says Lahera. Kentucky, he adds, 'is full of culture. I love it.'
The Woodford Reserve Derby 151 bottle is for sale at a suggested retail price of $49.99.
His artwork has evolved to represent a blend of his Cuban background and his exposure to American culture. Lahera says his approach to art has changed now that he's had an opportunity to see artwork from greats like French painter Claude Monet and American artist Jackson Pollock, who were stuck in books when he lived in Cuba but was able to experience in real life in American museums.
'I like to show people that in one painting, you can find all the styles—photorealism, realism, impressionism, abstraction—everything,' says Lahera. 'That's not art used for Americans or Cubans. I feel that my art can be recognized and loved internationally, because it has everything in one piece of art.'
Lahera's Derby bottle is meant to represent the event's action as a jockey and horse are depicted vaulting from an explosion of roses, racing toward the finish line, Lahera explains.
'Everything is fluid and full of colors and movements,' he says, including the classic representations of Churchill Downs with the twin spires that are part of the spectator stands and roses that are given to the winning horse. 'Carrera Dinamica,' Lahera adds, captures the image of a jockey 'chasing his American dream. Just like me.'
The Woodford Reserve Derby 151 bottle is for sale at a suggested retail price of $49.99 and available for purchase at the Woodford Reserve Distillery and online for shipping to select states at ReserveBar and Woodford's online store.

Joey Chestnut announces comeback at Nathan's 2025 Hot Dog Eating Contest

Joey Chestnut will return to Coney Island for the 2025 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest this Fourth of July. The legendary competitive eater announced Monday in a series of posts on X that he will return to the annual event after he was banned from it last year due to his affiliation with Impossible Foods. "I'm thrilled to be returning to the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest," Chestnut wrote. "This event means the world to me. It's a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life." He continued, "While I have and continue to partner with a variety of companies, including some in the plant-based space, those relationships were never a conflict with my love for hot dogs. To be clear: Nathan's is the only hot dog company I've ever worked with." "I respect that there were differences in interpretation, but I'm grateful we've been able to find common ground," he added. "I'm excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do, and celebrating the Fourth of July with hot dogs in my hands! Stay hungry!" As ABC News reported previously, Nathan's has long required competitive eaters not to endorse a rival brand if they plan to compete in its annual hot dog eating contest. Chestnut said last year that he was "gutted" over Major League Eating's decision at the time to rule him as ineligible to compete in the 2024 contest, due to his Impossible Foods endorsement. Chestnut, a 16-time winner who had been competing in the contest for nearly two decades when he was rule ineligible, said on X at the time that he loved "celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the fourth," and that he had been training to defend his title. While he wasn't able to compete in last year's Nathan's contest, Chestnut did celebrate the Fourth of July with an independent hot dog eating event in Fort Bliss, Texas. There, he ate 57 hot dogs in five minutes, one shy of Patrick Bertoletti's winning number at Nathan's, where Bertoletti took home his first Mustard Belt for consuming 58 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Al Pacino Becomes First Movie Star to Meet With Pope Leo XIV

Al Pacino kicked off his week with a quick trip to Rome. The actor arrived at the Vatican on Monday for a meeting with Pope Leo XIV. He was joined in his audience with the newly-elected official by Andrea Iervolino, producer of the forthcoming film Maserati: The Brothers. 'We are honored to announce that this morning His Holiness Pope Leo XIV received in a private audience at the Holy See a delegation from the film Maserati: The Brothers, including Oscar winner actor Al Pacino and the film's producer Andrea Iervolino,' Iervolino said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. Iervolino described their meeting as 'a moment of profound spiritual and cultural inspiration.' They join previously announced cast members Anthony Hopkins, Michele Morrone, Andy García, Jessica Alba, Salvatore Esposito, Lorenzo De Moor, Maya Talem, Victoria Sophia, and Annie Bezikian. Directed by Robert Moresco, the film about the brothers behind the Italian luxury car is being filmed in Italy. Iervolino noted that the themes of the film — 'family unity, love, compassion and the importance of contributing to the common good' — reflect common interests shared by the filmmakers and the Catholic Church. 'These values, which Pope Leo XIV has consistently emphasized in his recent messages to the world, resonate deeply with the story of the Maserati brothers,' he said, 'a family whose legacy was built not only on innovation and excellence but on profound mutual respect, solidarity and a shared vision.' Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, was elected in May following the death of Pope Francis. Prevost is the first American pope in history.
