Rise, at last, Sir David Beckham? The footballer may finally be knighted

Telegrapha day ago

David Beckham is reported to be in line for a knighthood.
He will become a Sir in the King's birthday honours list next week and his wife, Victoria, will be known as Lady Beckham, The Sun reported.
The former England footballer has become increasingly close to the royals since becoming an ambassador for the King's Foundation last year.
It will bring to an end years of speculation about whether and when Beckham will be knighted, and is also expected to provide some relief amid an ongoing rift with his eldest son Brooklyn and wife Nicola Peltz-Beckham.
He was first nominated for a knighthood in 2011 but his nomination was blocked by the honours committee after he was caught up in a tax avoidance scheme which led to him being rejected by the inland revenue.
Tax authorities cleared Beckham in 2021, opening the door to him getting the honour.
He narrowly missed out on a knighthood in December's New Years Honours List which instead went to former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate, according to The Sun.
Last year, Beckham revealed he had swapped beekeeping tips with the King before being given an ambassadorial role with the monarch's charity. The pair are both keen horticulturalists.
Beckham said at the time: 'It was inspiring to hear from the King about the work of His Majesty's Foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips!'
He has repeatedly rubbed shoulders with the King and Queen, and wore a new rose named in the King's Honour when he met them at the Chelsea Flower Show last month.
Beckham pinned a new pink and white bloom called The King's Rose to his lapel during his first ever visit to the show.
He also appeared to thank the King and Queen for a thoughtful 50th birthday gift after celebrating the milestone earlier in May.
'You got it, didn't you?' the King asked him. 'It was incredible, thank you,' Beckham replied. 'It was very kind.'
The Queen was heard to say: 'Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses.'
Beckham celebrated his 50th birthday this month with a lavish party which was shut down at 3am over a noise complaint.
His eldest son and his wife were absent, with a source telling The Telegraph that he and his wife, who is the daughter of US billionaire Nelson Peltz, feel that they have no meaningful private connection with the family and that he has been made to feel like an 'idiot' and 'stupid'.
The younger Beckhams were instead recent guests at a Montecito party attended by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Peltz, 30, and Meghan, 43, were said to have found 'common ground' over their casting as meddling American wives breaking up Britain's most famous families.
Meanwhile his second son Romeo Beckham has split with his girlfriend Kim Turnbull, according to the Daily Mail.

'Nowhere near good enough'

Scotland captain Andy Robertson tells BBC Scotland: "I think we all know that's nowhere near good enough."I don't want to say too much, we need to digest this and speak in the changing room before we start doing interviews."I think we were too easily played through, any chance they had they scored. We weren't good enough on the ball, created chances but didn't take them. Nowhere near good enough."Getting beat 3-1 at home by a team that, no disrespect, you should beat but they've been better than us. I imagine they've had more possession, I'd imagine more chances, they've got more goals and that's all that matters."I don't think you can put a finger on one thing but we need to get it right pretty quickly."

Jos Buttler serves up fireworks as England see off West Indies in first T20

The burden has gone for Jos Buttler. Playing his first Twenty20 international since stepping down from the white-ball captaincy, there was liberation as he struck a 59-ball 96 to set up England's 22-run win over West Indies. If there was any glumness for the 34-year-old, it was in missing out on what would have been his first T20I century at home. Nonetheless, Buttler top-scored in a total of 188 before Liam Dawson got to work. The left-arm spinner has been the darling of the county game in recent years but this was his return to the England show after nearly three years away. His story has long been that of the drinks carrier, an unused member of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad, there to use in case of emergency. Here he was part of the main cast and celebrated his best international figures, four wickets for 20 runs, his control crucial. A new life begins for Dawson, too. The London traffic had disrupted West Indies before the third one-day international at the Oval; this time it was British immigration policy. The recent introduction of a visa requirement for visitors from Trinidad and Tobago led to the absence of Akeal Hosein, the left-arm spinner still waiting to complete the process. Cricket West Indies 'remains optimistic' that the matter will be sorted in 'the coming days', yet this quickfire three-match series concludes on Tuesday. Hosein, noted for his guile with the new ball, was missed as England unleashed havoc on the opposition quicks at the start of the evening. Ben Duckett perished quickly to Romario Shepherd but Jamie Smith and Buttler were brutal in their 79-run standoff 6.4 overs. The former, taking advantage of Phil Salt's paternity leave, feasted over long-on to compile a 20-ball 38. Butter was a treat when going straight but also showcased the scoop when taking 22 off four Alzarri Joseph deliveries. With the next major assignment a T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year the focus for England remains how they counter spin. Gudakesh Motie's slow stuff inevitably brought quiet, his four overs wicketless but conceding just 21, while Roston Chase snuck one through Harry Brook to end the England captain's knock on six. West Indies' coterie of pace-bowling all-rounders recovered well as England fell to 116 for four and the surviving Buttler slowed down; after reaching 50 off 25 balls, his next 19 deliveries produced 16. But three figures remained on as he fetched a wide Jason Holder delivery and found the square-leg rope, as he reverse-swatted a fuller Shepherd ball to go to 86. Another along the carpet would have done it but Joseph found the pads. Dawson was immediately called upon in the West Indies reply, and success came quickly, an economical opening over followed by a wicket when he switched ends, a flighted delivery luring Johnson Charles forward and inviting the stumping from Buttler. A powerplay total of 44 for two gave England advantage though the game threatened to turn as Evin Lewis took a liking to Potts and then Jacob Bethell in his first over. The latter struggled with his line and conceded 24 runs before Lewis got a little too excited with the final ball, finding Brydon Carse's hands by the longer leg-side boundary. Dawson then capitalised on the required rate, Sherfane Rutherford and Chase offering Duckett simple grabs in the deep. When Rovman Powell collected a couple of boundaries in Dawson's final over, out came the pinpoint dart to rattle the stumps. Adil Rashid's commanding 16th over meant the contest was over before the death.

Prince William and Princess Sophie wow crowds as they team up for rare Royal double act

PRINCE William and his aunt Sophie teamed up yesterday in a rare royal double act. They toasted each other with gin during a joint engagement at the Royal Cornwall Show — and she proved to be a tonic by helping out with the heir to the throne's duties. 4 4 4 The Duke of Cornwall and Duchess of Edinburgh were met with cheering crowds yesterday. When he was offered a Rattler cider, Wills, 42, quipped: 'Everyone remembers their first Rattler. You don't remember your last.' He pretended to turn his nose up at the zero per cent alcohol option he was initially offered and asked for the proper stuff. At a gin stand, Wills joked he could 'see what today's going to be like' and also teased Sophie. They had been taken into a food and drinks tent, where Sophie was also seen happily chatting to a mother and baby about local produce. They went first to a chutney stand and then to the gin stall as William said: 'We've come from the chutneys straight into booze.' They were shown several gins before each were given one to try. He caught the Duchess going for another sip and joked to her: 'She said, 'You're not allowed to finish it'. You've got to watch her.' Sophie, 60, responded: 'He's learnt from the best.' Wills joked back: 'I've been caught out with whisky a few too many times. "I think I can do that and then, 'Oh no I couldn't'.' The pair were also given a traditional Cornish pasty by Ann's Pasties. They then moved to the Healeys Cyder Farm stand, where William said: 'Look at the Rattler selection. Ah, definitely I'm happy about that.' Head of hospitality Laura Clerehugh, 36, said: 'I was going to say, you've had a Rattler.' William responded: 'Everyone remembers where they were when they had their first Rattler, I can tell you that.' He then laughingly agreed that you don't remember your last. Wills then asked about the 'zero' on the bottle, and when told that it meant zero alcohol he put the cup down and said: 'Oh no, no, no. I need original. Someone bring out the big guns.' Sources said the day was a huge success. Sophie has been touted as the Royal Family's 'secret weapon' thanks to her unwavering support for the monarchy and dedication to charities. She was ranked the fourth hardest working royal of last year, having carried out 257 engagements. Her welcome contribution comes at a difficult time for the Royal Family. They were rocked last year when the King and the Princess of Wales were diagnosed with cancer. Charles continues to receive treatment, while Kate announced earlier this year that she was in remission. The King had a blast yesterday as he fired an artillery piece on a visit to the Royal Regiment of Artillery at Larkhill, Wiltshire. 4
