Dallas Stars finally have a version of their full lineup going into 3rd consecutive West final

NBC Sports20-05-2025

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Stars began these NHL playoffs without standout defenseman Miro Heiskanen and top goal scorer Jason Robertson, and still made it to their third consecutive Western Conference final.
Both returned in the second round, with Heiskanen coming back in the middle of the six-game series against Winnipeg after missing 3 1/2 months with a left knee injury. Now, coach Pete DeBoer gets to prepare for a West final rematch against Edmonton with something he hasn't really had in a long time.
'Well, first time since January we've had any kind of version of our full lineup,' DeBoer said. 'You never want to go into a fight with one arm tied behind your back. Really, the first two rounds, that's what we had, and to our group's credit, they found a way to grind through those series. But it's nice not to have to be in that type of situation.'
Dallas hosts the West opener after the Oilers wrapped up their second-round series in Game 5 with a 1-0 overtime win at Vegas.
Stars players got their second consecutive day off, when they would have been playing Game 7 at Winnipeg if they hadn't finished off the Jets with a 2-1 overtime win.
'We just went through two of the best teams in the league, so we're comfortable and we're getting, I feel, healthier and more up to speed with the guys that we put back in,' DeBoer said.
Robertson, who like Heiskanen was drafted by the Stars in 2017 and is 25, suffered a lower-body injury in the regular-season finale and missed the first-round series against Colorado. After 80 points (35 goals) while playing all 82 games for the third regular season in a row, he had only one assist, along with eight shots on goal and 19 total shot attempts, in six games against the Jets.
'He's not a young, immature player anymore. He's not looking for excuses or making excuses,' DeBoer said. 'He's looking in the mirror, looking for solutions. Been very coachable. So I see a world of maturity in him.'
Heiskanen needed surgery after getting injured on a big hit from Vegas captain Mark Stone on Jan. 28. The Stars defender missed the last 32 regular-season games and the first 10 in the playoffs before Game 4 against Winnipeg, when he had an assist in the 3-1 win.
'Listen, he took the proper amount of time. He wasn't rushed back, he didn't rush back,' DeBoer said. 'It took him a few games to get his timing, but I'm not surprised he's back where he's at right now.'
After playing nearly 15 minutes over 19 shifts in his first game back, Heiskanen increased to 18 1/2 minutes and 22 shifts in Game 5, then more than 23 1/2 minutes and 29 shifts in the series finale.
Heiskanen said he felt 'pretty normal' after the series against the Jets, and was getting more comfortable with every period and every game.
Dallas has gone with 11 forwards and seven defensemen since Heiskanen returned, but could soon go back to dressing 12 forwards.
Either way, DeBoer said Heiskanen returning to the defensive mix has been 'game-changing' for the Stars.
'All of a sudden you're slotting guys, you're playing them less minutes, they're more effective, they're playing in better matchup situations,' DeBoer said. 'Adding a guy like that back into your lineup slots everybody back properly.'
That includes Thomas Harley, who had the series-clinching OT goal against the Jets. He got extended ice time while Heiskanen was out, going from 22 1/2 minutes to nearly 25 minutes a game while playing about the same number of shifts.
'We loaded this guy up, so I think he understands,' DeBeor said. 'He's a better, more effective player with a little bit less and he also understands of course the importance of Miro back there for us to win.'

Jets' Jermaine Johnson expects to return Week 1 against Aaron Rodgers, Steelers

Jermaine Johnson's long-awaited comeback from a torn Achilles tendon is on track to happen the same day a former New York Jets teammate makes what's sure to be a much-hyped return. Week 1 at MetLife Stadium — against Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. "We actually were just texting last night," a smiling Johnson said of Rodgers on Tuesday after the first practice of the Jets' three-day mandatory minicamp. "It's funny. But obviously, I'm excited. He's excited." Johnson, a promising edge rusher who was coming off his first Pro Bowl selection, tore his right Achilles tendon in Week 2 last year and missed the rest of the season. Coach Aaron Glenn said the 2022 first-round draft pick should be "close" to being ready for training camp in July and could start on the physically unable to perform list, "but he'll be ready for the season." During the early days of his recovery, Johnson was comforted by Rodgers, who made a comeback of his own last season after tearing his left Achilles tendon four snaps into his debut with the Jets in 2023. Rodgers was released by New York in the offseason, signed last week with Pittsburgh and made his practice debut with the Steelers on Tuesday. "It was a pleasure having Aaron around and stuff like that, and I wish him the best," Johnson said. "But when I get between those lines, there's no friends. And I think he knows that, and he feels the same, so I'm excited. "It's just another game, but for me, it's going to be my first game back, and there's a lot of emotions. And when my emotions run high, I tend to play pretty well." Johnson declined to say what he and Rodgers texted about Monday night, but acknowledged the quarterback was instrumental in helping get his mind right as he prepared for the tough recovery and rehabilitation. "First thing he said, he's like, 'You'll be good. You've got a 10-year-plus career here. You're all right. Chalk it up,'" Johnson recalled. "It just kind of let me calm down a little bit and be able to gather myself and just take it on the chin and handle it and do a good job at it. So that's how I've attacked it. Aaron's been a tremendous help in so many ways." Despite the uncertainty over the injury, Glenn and the Jets showed their belief in Johnson as part of their defense moving forward when they picked up his fifth-year contract option, along with those of fellow 2022 first-rounders Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson. "It was a big investment," Johnson said. "They've seen enough of me and heard enough about me that they're willing to dive into that for at least one more year. So it means a lot to me. I'm always a man of my word and a man of honor, so to me, that's them lifting their end of the couch, and now it's my turn to lift my end of the couch." Johnson had 2.5 sacks in 14 games as a rookie after being drafted 26th overall out of Florida State before breaking out with 7.5 sacks in 2023 while starting all 17 games for New York. He also had 16 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss and returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown. Then came the setback last season, just as he was blossoming into a force on the Jets' defense. "I cried a little bit like right after I got hurt," Johnson said. "But I'm just a man a faith, so God wanted me to walk through this, and I took it like that and, you know, embodied this rehab. And I have full confidence I'm gonna come back without missing a beat." The Jets are banking on that, envisioning Johnson as a key part of their pass rush. Glenn was a member of the Detroit Lions staff that coached at the Senior Bowl in 2022, and Johnson left a lasting impression on him. "He's a hard-nosed, physical, violent player that's very athletic that has the ability to win off the edge and make plays on the quarterback," Glenn said. "Listen, you don't get a lot of guys that have the athleticism as he does but still be strong and powerful to be able to hold against the run. So I'm excited to see that player get out there in training camp and going into the first game. "So he's going to be a huge part of what we're doing. He knows that. But again, he understands what he's got to get better at, too." Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? The Jets' history that brings hope for a strong Aaron Glenn Year 1

Aaron Glenn doesn't blink in the face of history: The Jets' suffocating 14-year playoff drought, that agonizing 56-year-and-counting Super Bowl drought. His mission from Day 1 has been rallying a shell-shocked franchise to believe with him that they are the Freakin' New York Jets, and they're built for this. The laser-focused Glenn will only put stock in the here and now and doesn't give a damn about what happens in Pittsburgh or anywhere else outside Florham Park, but he should be heartened to know that there is history on his side as well. Every rookie coach arrives talking about sustained success, and too many of them fail. But it doesn't preclude catching lightning in a bottle as a novice.

Jets' Jermaine Johnson embracing high expectations for injury return — with Aaron Rodgers bonus

Jermaine Johnson was texting former teammate Aaron Rodgers on Monday night. Johnson would not say if the two discussed Week 1, when Rodgers will lead the Steelers into MetLife Stadium to face the Jets. Advertisement But he acknowledged that he can't wait to face him. For Johnson, it will mean more than just getting a chance to sack Rodgers. It will be his first game back after tearing his right Achilles tendon in Week 2 last season. 'Obviously, I'm excited. He's excited. It was a pleasure having Aaron around. I wish him the best,' Johnson said. 'When I get between those lines, there's no friends. I think he knows that and he feels the same. I'm excited. It's just another game, but for me it's going to be my first game back. There's going to be a lot of emotions. When my emotions run high, I tend to play pretty well.' Advertisement Johnson's locker was near Rodgers' in the Jets locker room in Florham Park. Rodgers often held court at his locker and Johnson was one of the players who often was hanging with him. When Johnson tore his Achilles last September, it was Rodgers who gave him advice after dealing with the same injury the year before. 4 Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson talks to the media at minicamp in Florham Park. On Tuesday, Johnson was on a side field with trainers, pulling a weighted sled behind him as his teammates opened up their three-day minicamp. Advertisement The Jets expect Johnson to return at some point in training camp and definitely in time for the regular season. Johnson said he's learned about himself during this process. 'I learned that I'm a pretty good handyman,' Johnson joked. 'I don't got to pay somebody from Task Rabbit to do things around the house anymore.' Then, Johnson really answered the question. 'I've always been pretty good at patience,' Johnson said. 'You all know it, it wasn't the easiest or shortest ride getting here. It was just another thing. I've never been seriously injured. Oddly enough, it added some confidence to me. I would always see guys get season-ending injuries and be like, 'Dang, I don't know if I've got what it takes to do that.' Now, going through it, it's like obviously I do. I just feel so confident right now.' Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The Jets are counting on Johnson to return to his pre-injury form. He had 7.5 sacks and made the Pro Bowl in 2023. He was expected to be a big piece of the 2024 defense, then the injury happened. New Jets coach Aaron Glenn is familiar with Johnson, having coached him in the 2022 Senior Bowl. 'There's things that stand out going back to college and even at the Senior Bowl when I had a chance to coach him then,' Glenn said. 'He's a hard-nosed, physical, violent player that's very athletic, that has the ability to win off the edge and make plays on the quarterback. Listen, you don't get a lot of guys that has the athleticism that he does but still be strong and powerful to hold up against the run. Bill Kostroun/New York Post The new Jets regime showed its belief in Johnson when it picked up his fifth-year option this spring. That guarantees him $13.4 million in 2026 if the Jets and Johnson don't agree to a long-term deal before then. 'It's a big investment,' Johnson said. 'They've seen enough of me and heard enough about me that they're willing to dive into that for at least one more year. It means a lot to me. I'm always a man of my word and a man of honor. To me, that's them lifting their end of the cup and now it's my turn to lift my end of the cup.'
