‘Trump movement' turns on Cornyn, poll finds

Politico10 hours ago

MAGA loyalists have put Sen. John Cornyn's reelection campaign in a Texas-size hole.
An early May poll commissioned by the American Opportunity Alliance, a major conservative funding group linked to megadonor Paul Singer, shows the Texas Republican down 17 points in a head-to-head primary matchup with state attorney general Ken Paxton.
Below the top-line of Paxton's 52-percent-to-35-percent advantage, the poll found a clear divide between those voters who were defined as 'Trump Movement' voters and those who were 'Traditional Republicans.' In the former category, which made up of 58 percent of the electorate, Paxton had a 45-point lead. Among the latter, who made up only 35 percent of voters, Cornyn had a 27-point lead.
The findings reflect a increasingly prominent divide among Republican primary voters in Texas where an insurgent hard-right faction has been steadily gaining ground in recent years while ousting more traditional GOP elected officials. Paxton, who has faced federal investigation and impeachment, has long been a darling of right-wingers in Texas, while Cornyn — first elected to the Senate in 2002 — is considered a pillar of the establishment GOP.
In a speculative three-way race with GOP Rep. Wesley Hunt, who is exploring a bid, the margin barely narrowed with the Cornyn trailing Paxton, 43 percent to 27 percent, with Hunt receiving 14 percent.
There was some good news for the incumbent in the poll. Despite trailing Paxton significantly, he is still viewed favorably by the Republican primary electorate in the Lone Star State — just not as favorably as the state attorney general.
The poll, conducted from April 29 through May 1 among 800 Republican primary voters, is among a series of public and private surveys all showing Cornyn significantly trailing Paxton. They have sparked increasing concern from national Republican operatives about a potentially ugly and costly primary, as well as the possible elevation of a scandal-plagued candidate who might be at risk in a general election.
The American Opportunity Alliance's interest in the race is notable; it's one of the key donor consortiums in Republican politics and its members including Singer and Chuck Schwab are some of the biggest funders on the right.

Bill Maher mocks Dems for trying to find ‘their Joe Rogan,' suggests figuring out how they lost him

'Real Time' host Bill Maher mocked the Democratic Party's attempt to find 'their Joe Rogan,' pointing out the irony that the podcaster had leaned left until he became disillusioned with the party. The host explained, 'One idea that's getting a lot of attention is the Dems need to find their Joe Rogan, a liberal Joe Rogan.' Maher argued that rather than 'conjuring up a new Joe Rogan,' Democrats should be asking themselves how they lost him in the first place. Advertisement Rogan previously endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., in the 2020 election. It wasn't until 2024 that Rogan publicly endorsed President Donald Trump. The 'Real Time' host lampooned the idea that the real reason why former Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election is because 'Republicans have a podcast.' 'Okay, maybe. Or, you could consider this,' Maher jeered. 'Instead of conjuring up a new Joe Rogan, ask yourself why you lost the old one, because he used to be on your side.' In 2024, regarding the Democratic desire to find its own Rogan, the podcaster said, 'They had me.' 'I was on their side,' he added. Advertisement Maher noted that he's watched the political evolution of both Rogan and Musk and their party affiliations didn't switch 'overnight.' Youtube/Real Time with Bill Maher Maher compared Rogan's political transformation to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was also a liberal who ended up being 'driven to the other camp by bad attitudes and bad ideas.' Maher noted that he's watched the political evolution of both Rogan and Musk and their party affiliations didn't switch 'overnight.' Maher referenced a 2022 post on then-Twitter from Elon Musk in which he shared a chart depicting his feeling that the Democratic Party had moved too far to the left for him, rather than his ideology moving to the right. Advertisement Rogan previously endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., in the 2020 election. Rogan said that Democrats have moved so far that it 'left a basically liberal centrist like him — now labeled a conservative,' adding that he related to Musk's post. Maher also highlighted attempts by the left to cancel Rogan and Musk as a key reason they abandoned the party. Advertisement 'They tried real hard to cancel Rogan a few years ago — and when Elon hosted 'Saturday Night Live' in 2021, well before he was a Trumper — some of the cast gave him the cold shoulder for the sin of being rich,' he recalled. 'You think people don't remember when you do this s— to them?' The late-night host asserted that while he's never left the party, Democrats need to work hard to get 'all the guys in America like Joe and Elon' back on their side, but assured them that it's still possible.

Texas State Senator voices concerns over groundwater well permit

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – A Texas State Senator is joining several other Texas officials to voice his concerns about a pending permit that would authorize the drilling of 21 new groundwater wells in Anderson County. East Texas officials express opposition to new high-capacity wells State Senator Robert Nichols of District 3 sent a letter to the Neches and Trinity Valleys Ground Water Conservation District stating his concerns about the authorization of the drilling and how it could impact residents and livestock in Anderson County. 'This kind of large-scale withdrawal poses serious risks to existing water users, particularly rural landowners, farmers and municipalities who rely on stable aquifer conditions to support homes, crops and livestock,' Nichols said. Nichols went on to urge the board to consider the long-term implications this permit would have on the district and the impact it would have on their groundwater resources going forward. 'Denying this permit would be consistent with the District's responsibility to prevent waste and ensure the conservation of groundwater for all stakeholders,' Nichols said. The groundwater production permit application was submitted by Redtown Ranch Holdings LLC for 21 high-capacity groundwater wells that Nichols said could extract 10 billion gallons of water a year from the Carrizo and Wilcox aquifers. 'The proposed wells would reportedly authorize the extraction of over 10 billion gallons of water annually from the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer,' Nichols said. 'Further, 11 additional proposed wells in neighboring Houston County, outside of the District's jurisdiction, could raise the total volume to 15 billion gallons annually. This is a staggering figure, especially considering that none of the water appears to be designated for use by the communities from which it would be drawn.' State Rep. Trent Ashby also expressed his concerns about the potential permit earlier this month, stating the negative impact it could have on private and municipal wells. 'As a lifelong resident of East Texas and a member of the Texas House of Representatives, I have consistently supported responsible groundwater management and local control over water resources,' Ashby said. This proposed project is deeply troubling. 'The sheer volume of water involved, equivalent to the annual usage of more than two million Texans, raises serious concerns about aquifer depletion, potential impacts on surrounding private and municipal wells, and the long-term sustainability of our region's water supply.' Cody Harris, the Chair of the Texas House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, also expressed his concerns with the permit. 'While we are working rigorously at the state level to propose and enact significant legislation that will help ease the ongoing burdens across the state, I will not stand by while attempts are made to drain my own district,' Harris said. Elon Musk Deletes Tweet Linking Trump to ‘Epstein Files'

Former 'First Buddy' Elon Musk has deleted a spate of explosive tweets in which he claimed President Donald Trump 'is in the Epstein files.' He added in the since-scrubbed June 5 tweet, 'That is the real reason they have not been made public.' He then promised, 'Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.' The dramatic claim came amid Musk's nearly three-day blitzkrieg attack against Trump, urging Congress to 'kill' the MAGA head's 'big beautiful bill,' ripping it as 'ugly and 'pork-filled,' and suggesting Trump should be impeached again for his plan to add an estimated $2.4 trillion to the federal deficit through the megabill. Yet Musk appears to have reset and climbed out of his 'Trump Derangement Syndrome,' as the president labeled it, amid MAGA's calls for the billionaire to make amends with the Republican president. Investor and former DOGE architect James Fishback—who told Politico that he left the so-called department amid the Trump-Musk feud—tweeted Friday that Musk owed Trump a 'full-throated apology.' He added, 'And every hour you delay, it'll make an eventual apology less sincere.' Amid disagreements on policy between the Trump and Musk, Fishback said Musk 'should not have baselessly and personally attacked him.' Musk used Fishback's tweet as an opportunity to share his side, writing in successive comments under the post: 'What's the apology for exactly.' He added, 'Be precise,' declaring, 'I will apologize profusely as soon as there is a full dump of the Epstein files.' Musk's comments under the post have also since been deleted. Keeping the pressure on Musk, Fishback followed up by sharing his Friday appearance on CNN with two specific directives on why the Tesla CEO should apologize to Trump. 'First, randomly calling for the impeachment of the duly elected President of the United States over a policy disagreement,' Fishback wrote. 'Second, and it just pains me to bring this up, is the slanderous accusation that somehow the President of the United States was a co-conspirator in a multi-decade sex trafficking ring of minors.' Attempting to play peacekeeper, Fishback added that it was 'not okay' for Musk to drag Trump 'in the mud' with 'scumbag' Epstein. 'As Americans, we are allowed to disagree on the substance of the issue—but ad hominem attacks have no place in the public square,' Fishback wrote. Another commentator added, 'The Epstein comment went too far, whether it is true or not.' However, other commentators weren't convinced Musk owed Trump anything at all. 'He owes Trump exactly nothing,' commented X user John Roush under Fishback's post. 'He made the mistake of believing Trump's talk about reigning in spending, agreed to try and help, ended up becoming one of the most reviled men in America, and then found out that Trump doesn't give a damn about spending & was just using him as an election prop.' Rumors have swirled that White House aides have set up a deescalation call between Trump and Musk. Despite this, BBC News reported that the president is 'not interested' in making up with Musk.
