New Progress Report From World's Biggest Construction Project

Miami Herald7 days ago

Further progress has been announced at Saudi Arabia's vast Neom project with the completion of an underground tunnel to connect a ski resort in the desert at the world's largest construction site.
Newsweek has reached out to the company for comment.
The company's announcement signals continued progress at Saudi Arabia's Neom, despite reports of repeated budget overruns, delays, and a recent full review of project goals ordered by its new leadership.
The outdoor ski resort-set in one of the world's hottest desert countries and due to rely largely on artificial snow-embodies the scale and ambition of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's megaproject, which is designed to help prepare the kingdom for a future beyond oil.
Trojena has completed excavation of its B3 Tunnel, with a final blast breaking through the last section of rock to connect the 680-meter (2,200 feet) tunnel linking the Lake Access Road to the Vault, the company announced on LinkedIn.
The Lake Access Road leads to the artificial lake at the center of the luxury tourist resort. Overlooking the site is the Vault, an architectural feature designed as a folded vertical village built into the mountainside.
Perched on Saudi Arabia's Jebel al Lawz at over 8,500 feet, Trojena spans nearly 870 square miles, and features 18 miles of ski slopes, a dozen hotels, retail outlets and restaurants, and a massive man-made lake holding up to 15 billion gallons of water, according to Neom.
Neom has recently appointed a new CEO in a push to fast-track flagship developments. Critics of the megaproject say that its sustainability claims amount to greenwashing-promoting an eco-friendly image while engaging in practices that harm the environment and violate human rights.
Tomasso Ciancio, Construction Director at Webuild company, posted on Linkedin: "At Trojena, where every stone moved and every meter advanced reflects months of planning and sacrifice, I'm reminded daily why we push forward. Leadership in a place like this isn't just about progress-it's about resilience, belief, and the will to finish what we started. To everyone in this journey with me: thank you for waking up every day ready to build the impossible."
Human Rights Watch in December 2024 report: "A worker who was employed as a supervisor in a NEOM project said, 'My job is to set targets for workers. Tasks must be completed within a fixed timeline, which puts undue pressure on workers.'"
Saudi Arabia is racing to complete the ski resort ahead of the Asian Winter Games of 2029 which it is planning to host.

Rand Paul Thinks There Are Enough GOP Senators to Block Trump Budget Bill

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Senator Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, said Sunday that he's confident there are enough members of his party to vote against President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful" spending bill amid concerns that it does not make enough cuts to spending. Newsweek reached out to the White House and Paul's office by email outside of normal business hours on Sunday for comment. Why It Matters Trump made the passage of a new spending bill one of his centerpiece policy goals for his second administration, aiming to wrap everything up into one single bill, the much-touted "big, beautiful bill" that will allow him to pursue his raft of policies. The bill would extend the president's 2017 tax cats, reduce taxes for individuals and corporations, and add new exemptions for tipped workers and overtime pay. Critics also warn that the bill's spending cuts would prove insufficient to pay for the proposed tax cuts and other spending priorities. However, some Republicans have voiced reservations about supporting the bill, with the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimating that it will add $3.8 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years. The House of Representatives passed the bill by just one vote, 215-214, as two Republicans broke ranks and joined every House Democrat in opposing the bill. What To Know Paul has spoken out against the spending bill and said he will not vote to pass it due to the inclusion of a mechanism that would allow Congress to increase the nation's debt limit by $5 trillion. On Sunday, the senator appeared on CBS News' Face the Nation when host Margaret Brennan asked, "Do you have three other Republicans who will stand with you to block this bill?" Paul responded: "I think there are four of us at this point, and I would be very surprised if the bill at least is not modified in a good direction." He continued: "I want to vote for it. I'm for the tax cuts. I voted for the tax cuts before, I want the tax cuts to be permanent, but at the same time I don't want to raise the debt ceiling $5 trillion, so I've told them if you take the debt ceiling off the bill, in all likelihood I can vote for what the agreement is on the rest of the bill. And it doesn't have to be perfect to my liking, but if I vote for the $5 trillion debt, who's left in Washington that cares about the debt? The GOP will own the debt once they vote for this." The GOP senator said Trump's "big, beautiful bill" increases spending by about $320 billion for the military and for the border. "To put that perspective, that's more than all the [Department of Government Efficiency] DOGE cuts that we found so far, so the increase in spending put into this bill exceeds the DOGE cuts," he said Sunday. Paul then cited what he called inflated spending on the southern border wall, noting that the Trump administration managed to carry out its deportations without needing new spending or equipment and therefore deeming such expenditure in the bill is "asking for too much money." "In the end, the way you add it up to see if it actually is going to save money or add money is how much debt are they going to borrow—$5 trillion over two years is an enormous amount," he said. Brennan: Do you have three other Republicans who will stand with you to block this bill? Paul: I think there are four of us at this point — Acyn (@Acyn) June 1, 2025 What People Are Saying Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday: "The American people, like the Great People of Kentucky, do not support Biden spending levels and $5T in new debt. Therefore, I will not. It's simple." Senator Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, wrote on X on Sunday: "The House Budget process focused on $1.5 trillion in reduced spending and ignored the looming debt crisis. I am preparing a report: FY2025 Budget Reconciliation, Facts & Figures. I hope to complete it shortly and hold a hearing on it before we take any more Senate votes on the budget." President Donald Trump on Truth Social last week: "THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL" has PASSED the House of Representatives! This is arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country!" He added a message to Senate Republicans: "Now, it's time for our friends in the United States Senate to get to work, and send this Bill to my desk AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! There is no time to waste." House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, in a statement on Thursday: "Today, the House has passed generational, nation-shaping legislation that reduces spending, permanently lowers taxes for families and job creators, secures the border, unleashes American energy dominance, restores peace through strength, and makes government work more efficiently and effectively for all Americans." What Happens Next? Other GOP senators, including Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine and Josh Hawley of Missouri, have also raised concerns about the bill, and have voiced concerns ahead of a vote on the bill, which the Senate has set to happen before the Fourth of July.

Leon Bailey set to depart Aston Villa for Saudi Arabian outfit Neom SC

Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey is reportedly on the verge of completing a sensational move to Saudi Arabian Pro League newcomers Neom SC, according to The Sun. The Jamaican international, who joined Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2021 for a fee in the region of £27 million, has struggled with consistency during his time at Villa Park, despite flashes of brilliance and moments of attacking flair. Advertisement Bailey has made over 146 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals and providing 23 assists across all competitions. Due to Villa's abundance of options in attack, Bailey was on the periphery for large spells of the recently concluded season, where he made just 14 Premier League starts. Neom, one of the ambitious new additions to Saudi Arabia's rapidly growing top-flight league, have now submitted a formal offer worth around £25 million for the 27-year-old winger. After cruising to the First Division title with 79 points from 34 matches, Neom are seeking significant reinforcements ahead of life amongst the elite. Advertisement Bailey has already agreed to personal terms which would see him earn £10m per year, and the move is expected to be finalised in the coming weeks. A switch to Neom presents an opportunity for Bailey to play regularly and display a glimpse of the potential that earned him a move to the West Midlands. With Bailey on the verge of leaving and both Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio both set to return to their parent clubs, Villa could be in the market for a new attacker and have been linked with a move for Harvey Barnes. Unai Emery's side just about missed out on a place in the Champions League last time out, finishing behind fifth-place Newcastle United on goal difference.

Planning completed for $4 billion bridge linking Africa and Asia, construction set to begin

The governments of Saudi Arabia and Egypt have unveiled a groundbreaking, multibillion-dollar bridge project that will connect Africa and Asia across the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia and Egypt are collaborating on the "Moses Bridge" project connecting Africa and Asia. The bridge, with a projected cost of $4 billion, will span the Strait of Tiran, linking Ras Hamid in Saudi Arabia to Egypt's Sharm El-Sheikh. Originally announced in 2016, the bridge has completed its planning phase and awaits implementation. Although it was originally unveiled by Saudi Arabia's King Salman in 2016, the bridge is expected to cost around $4 billion, fully financed by the Kingdom and would link Saudi Arabia's Ras Hamid with Egypt's Sharm El-Sheikh, spanning the Strait of Tiran. According to The Sun UK, the ambitious project, dubbed the " Moses Bridge," has taken a significant step forward with Egypt confirming the completion of its planning phase. Egypt's Minister of Transport, Kamel al-Wazir, revealed in the past week that all planning work has been finalized. 'We have now completed the planning for the bridge between Egypt and Saudi Arabia and are ready to implement it at any time—whether as a bridge or a tunnel,' al-Wazir said. Currently, maritime transport between the two countries is managed by the Arab Bridge Maritime Company, which operates a fleet of 13 cargo and passenger vessels. Bridge to boost futuristic pilgrimage The new bridge, however, is expected to significantly enhance logistics, tourism, and trade in the region. The bridge will complement Saudi Arabia's NEOM development, an ambitious futuristic city project situated near the Kingdom's northwestern borders. It will provide an alternative pilgrimage route to Mecca, potentially serving over a million travelers annually. The project has been hailed as a historic feat of engineering and diplomacy. In 2016, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi suggested naming the structure "King Salman bin Abdulaziz Bridge" after the Saudi monarch. However, the public has affectionately dubbed it the "Moses Bridge" due to its symbolic location and cultural significance. Notably, earlier plans for a Red Sea bridge have been discussed since 1988, but have been delayed and stalled due to political hesitations. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's NEOM project, estimated to cost a staggering $500 billion, continues to face intense global scrutiny. Conceived as a futuristic, tech-driven city, the venture has been marred by delays, internal controversies, and criticism over human rights concerns. Behind NEOM's gleaming façade, critics have raised alarms about troubling practices. The Moses Bridge, however, may offer a more unifying vision—one that seamlessly blends symbolism, strategy, and regional development into a single structure spanning continents.
