Plans for Burslem venue in memory of Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister

BBC News2 days ago

A planned concert venue in heavy metal legend Lemmy Kilmister's hometown would help to boost the area's music scene, a local artist has said. The proposal would see the vacant Queen's Theatre in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, transformed into an 800-seat venue with a cafe, museum and music studios.Among those behind the idea is sculptor Andy Edwards, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, who created the statue of the Burslem-born Motorhead frontman.Mr Edwards told BBC Radio Stoke the venue, which would be called Kilmister Hall, could help to attract more bands and artists to the city.
"We've got a big musical heritage in this city and we used to attract the best bands," he said."That's drifted away and this [new venue] would make a huge difference in getting that back again."
The Grade II-listed Queen's Theatre originally closed in 1998 but reopened for occasional events in 2003 before shutting again in 2014.It neighbours the Lemmy statue on Market Place, which was unveiled on 9 May to mark 10 years since the singer's death from cancer and the 50-year anniversary of Motorhead's formation.According to IFK Legacy CIC, which is working on the proposal, plans for the venue were at an early stage and organisers were looking at procuring the building and raising funds.Meetings have been held with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, which owns the theatre, and Mr Edwards said they had been "really positive".
He said it was important the project was financially viable, adding: "It's not just about wild dreams, it's about making things pay for themselves and not run out of steam."A spokesperson for the city council said there had been "lots of discussions" with interested parties over the future of the Queen's Theatre."While these discussions are in still in the early stages and all options are being explored, it is clear that all interested parties are keen to progress with a project to restore the building, particularly one which will combine a performance space with wider community and educational uses," they added.

Tom Aspinall makes vow over Jon Jones retirement jibe: ‘People think I'm joking, but it's the truth'

Tom Aspinall has doubled down on his claim that Jon Jones has retired, telling The Independent: 'People think I'm joking, but it's the truth.' Aspinall has held the interim UFC heavyweight title since knocking out Sergei Pavlovich in November 2023, when an injured Jon Jones was unable to defend the regular belt against Stipe Miocic. Jones finally returned 12 months later and stopped Miocic, but only after Aspinall made the rare move of defending the interim title, which he retained with a knockout of Curtis Blaydes last July. As a result of the Briton's victory and Jones's success against fellow American Miocic, the pair should have been paired in a title unification bout by now. However, 38-year-old Jones has refused to commit to such a contest, never publicly saying he will fight Aspinall, 32. That led the Wigan heavyweight to tell Chael Sonnen and Daniel Cormier, two of Jones's former opponents, this week: 'Jon's retired [...] The guy's living his best life, he's had a fantastic career, we all know. We know Jon's a religious man, so I want to say: God bless him moving forward with what he does in his life and career. 'We move on. I'm the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, I'm ready to take on all comers, get this division moving again. Us guys have been waiting around too long. The contenders are getting sick of it, everybody's getting sick of it, even the fans are getting sick of this stuff. So, Jon's retired, and it's time that we move on.' And speaking to The Independent on Wednesday (4 June), at the launch of Aspinall's long-term partnership with sportswear brand Champion, he added: 'I want to keep my job, so I don't want to say too much, but I said what I've said in other interviews and stuff... People think I'm joking, but it's the truth. 'I'm not the kind of guy to pull any media stunts or anything like that, like... What I'm saying is the truth.' Aspinall added that his next fight 'will be announced pretty soon as far as I'm aware', after he told Sonnen and Cormier: 'I've got a date and a location. I've got a date and a location.' He told The Independent: 'I've been on the sideline for almost a year and all things aside – like money, fame, titles, all the rest of it – I'm someone who absolutely loves what I do and loves fighting. So, for me to have the opportunity to fight again after a year of being healthy and not fighting, that just makes me happy. So, I feel good about it.' Fans may interpret those updates as Aspinall having agreed a return date with the UFC but without Jones being confirmed as his opponent. With the UFC having announced main events for its pay-per-views in June, July and August, Aspinall seems unlikely to fight before September, which was set to host a Mexican-centric PPV that is now a standard Fight Night. While some fans view Jones, a former two-time light-heavyweight champion, as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, his career has been marred by numerous failed drug tests and run-ins with the law. Still, Jones is effectively unbeaten, with his sole loss having come via DQ in 2009. Meanwhile, Aspinall is 15-3 in MMA and 8-1 in the UFC. In the promotion, his only defeat occurred due to injury, while all of his career finishes have come via stoppage. In fact, Aspinall holds the UFC record for the shortest fight time of an athlete with five or more bouts; all of his wins in the promotion have come in the first two rounds – seven in round one, two in the first minute. Aspinall's decision to defend the interim belt was a rarity in the UFC, as the Wigan heavyweight aimed to stay active during Jones's absence. In that fight, Aspinall stopped Curtis Blaydes in 60 seconds, avenging his injury-induced loss to the American in 2022.

'Worst kit EVER': Fans hit out at Man City's new third strip for next season after 'shocking' jersey is leaked online

Angry Manchester City fans have brutally mocked their 'montrosity' of a third kit for next season after it was reportedly leaked online. Supporters took to social media to declare it the 'worst kit ever' as pictures circulated on Wednesday. The leaked strip shows a grey and neon green Puma shirt with the Manchester City logo sitting atop in the middle. The base of the shirt is grey, while there are water droplets spread across. The shirt 'features a unique look inspired by rain droplets on a window... creating a highly-textured and eye-catching effect,' according to Footy Headlines, who leaked the kit. The official colours are reportedly 'cool weather' and 'pro green' and moves away from the Manchester club's traditional sky blue look. It is scheduled to be released before the new Premier League season in August. But City supporters have hit out at the leaked kit, with some branding it a 'disgrace'. 'The third kit in no exaggeration is the worst kit I have ever seen,' one moaned on X. 'Away kit looks clean but that third is kit is an absolute disgrace,' another added. One fan wrote: 'The away kit is one of our best of all time, it nearly makes up for the monstrosity next to it.' Another said: 'The third kit is a disgrace. One of the worst kits I've ever seen.' 'That third kit is shocking,' A further fan added. The leaked shirt takes on a similar colour pattern to City's 2022/23 lime green and black stripey kit. One Man City fan brutally hit out at the third kit, which they described as an 'absolute disgrace' Another City fan added: 'That third kit in no exaggeration is by far the worst kit I've ever seen' Pep Guardiola's side wore that strip as they lifted the treble, winning their first ever Champions League and their third consecutive Premier League trophy. City have worn a green kit as their alternative strip for decades. They wore one in 2015/16, which paid homage to the kit they wore in their comeback victory against Gillingham in the 2000 Second Division play-off final, which saw them score two injury time goals and seal a 3-1 victory in the penalty shootout. Their second kit for next season was also leaked and the simple full black look was met more praise by City fans. Meanwhile, Manchester United fans also lashed out a leaked third kit for next season, with Red Devils faithful declaring 'you couldn't pay me to wear it.'
