Won't be able to hold NEET in single shift before Aug 3: NBEMS to SC

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) — which conducts the entrance exam for post-graduate and super-speciality medical courses — told the Supreme Court that it will not be able to conduct the NEET-PG test before August 3. The examination, which was scheduled to take place on June 15, was recently postponed after court's direction to conduct it in a single shift, instead of two like it took place last year. The NBEMS, in an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, said that this was the minimum amount of time required for arranging additional centres, invigilators, and support staff. Citing Tata Consultancy Services, its partner in conducting the examination that is computer-based and not pen-and-paper, the NBEMS said it needs to engage more than 1,000 centres across 250 cities for the examination. Nearly 60,000 people will also have to be engaged ranging from venue commanding officers, system operators, invigilators, security staff, lab and registration managers, and electricians. 'NEET PG, being a high stake and flagship exam in the country, attempts to do malpractice is a major challenge to be addressed which will require all law enforcement agencies to come together and join hands,' said NBEMS. Besides this, certain other steps would have to be taken such as giving the students a choice to select centres, it said.

NEET-PG 2025 to be held 3 in a single shift on August, Supreme Court told

NEW DELHI: The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Postgraduate 2025 (NEET-PG 2025), which will be previously scheduled to be held in two shifts on June 15, will now be conducted in a single shift on August 3, the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) told in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The board's decision comes days after a bench headed by justice Vikram Nath on May 30 set aside its decision to hold the examination in two shifts, ruling that the two-shift model was 'arbitrary' since any two question papers could never be said to be have an 'identical level of difficulty or ease'. The bench gave NBEMS two weeks to identify more centres for this purpose. The board, which sought the top court's approval to the new date, said in its application that August 3 was the earliest possible date given by its technology partner i.e., M/s Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS). The company has suggested the examination could be held in a single shift from 9 am to 12.30 pm on August 3. When the plan was to conduct the exam in two shifts, NBEMS said the test was to be conducted at 448 centres across 195 cities. NBEMS said the examination for 2,42,679 candidates would now be conducted at more than 1,000 centres across over 250 cities, and would require over 60,000 people to handle jobs ranging from the commanding officers, system operators, network administrators to invigilators, security staff, registration managers, CCTV staff, electricians. In addition, TCS has indicated that it would need to arrange and configure over 2,000 local exam servers across the country. 'The respondent (NBEMS) is fully committed to holding the NEET-PG 2025 in a single this application is being made only to ensure practical feasibility and safety of the said examination along with the coordination with all the relevant authorities and stakeholders,' NBEMS said. The top court's decision against the two-shift format came on a petition by candidates who reasoned that the questions in the evening shift last year were relatively easier than the first shift. The petitioners, which included individual candidates and the United Doctors Front, questioned why no effort wsas made to identify options to hold the examination in a single shift. NBEMS had initially claimed that it opted for the two-shift system to rule out the possibility of malpractices by unscrupulous elements since the online examination required secured centres.

Collector inspects removal of plastic pellets from seashore in 2 coastal hamlets

Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena visited the Midalam and Kodimunai beaches on Tuesday to inspect the ongoing removal of the plastic pellets washed ashore from the damaged containers of the sunken Liberian vessel off Kochi coast on May 25 last. As the ship, MSC Elsa 3, carrying more than 600 containers went down as it was sailing to Kochi Harbour on May 25 last due to suspected engine failure, some of the damaged containers holding plastic pellets, logs, cashew etc. were washed ashore in the coastal hamlets of western Kanniyakumari district on May 28 evening and also in the areas like Poovar in Kerala. Since social media posts claimed that containers carrying highly hazardous chemicals were being washed ashore to cause serious pollution to marine life, the district administration clarified that only non-hazardous materials were getting washed ashore along the shoreline of the villages and there was no panic for pollution. Though the fishermen and the villagers were cautioned against making any attempt to collect the plastic pellets or other materials being washed ashore, the villagers in large numbers collected the cashew for their use even as heavy equipment was used to remove the containers got stuck on the seashore. On receiving the protocols from the Kerala government for removing the products including the plastic pellets from the seashore, Ms. Alagumeena deployed the police, revenue, fire and rescue services, disaster management and pollution control board personnel for the operation. She also contacted the shipping company's officials in Gujarat who rushed a team to the affected villages of Kanniyakumari district for removing the plastic pellets and other products. 'While the products in one container have been handed over to the Department of Customs and Central Excise, Thoothukudi, other products collected from the seashore are being kept under the custody of respective local bodies. Removal of the plastic pellets from the seashore is going on. Repeated inspections at various spots of the coastal hamlets are being done and we are sure that there is no chemical pollution in any part of the district. We are also creating awareness among the coastal community about handling of the plastic pellets,' Ms. Alagumeena said. Sub-Collector of Padmanabhapuram Vijaykumar Meena accompanied the Collector during the inspection.
