The Outer Worlds 2 Direct: Arcadia Is Nice This Time of Year
Immediately following the Xbox Games Showcase at Summer Game Fest 2025, The Outer Worlds 2 Direct revealed all of the new mechanics coming to Obsidian's upcoming sequel.
It has been an absolute whirlwind of news, previews, world premieres and new gameplay reveals during the weekend of Summer Game Fest 2025. New looks were given to titles like Grounded 2, Ninja Gaiden IV, and even a new Call of Duty was announced, however, Obsidian Entertainment followed the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 with their very own The Outer Worlds 2 Direct. The teaser trailer presented at the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 presentation can be seen in full below, and a written breakdown of the direct follows.
One of the most interesting things following the sequel is The Outer Worlds 2 is leaving the previous star system of Halycon, and it takes place in a further star system from Earth than even Halycon, in the Arcadia star cluster. What was made immediately transparent by the direct, is Obsidian leaned fully into their trademark humour and storytelling, and chaos will ensue everywhere. Arcadia is a lawless system cut off from Earth, featuring a pressure cooker of a colony bearing immense pressure, torn apart by space-time rifts, factions with ever-shifting alliances, and these three power-hungry factions locked in a war for control.
Like The Outer Worlds (and mostly every other Obsidian Entertainment game), The Outer Worlds 2 allows the player to create themselves from head to toe, giving an in-depth character creator to the player. In The Outer Worlds 2, you've been sent in as an Earth Directorate agent but how you approach problems, tense scenarios, and storyline segments is entirely up to the player. Obsidian gives players complete control, allowing you to select from a group of traits, flaws, and backgrounds that Obsidian promises will 'shape every decision.'
The three warring factions are as follows: The Protectorate, Auntie's Choice, and The Order of the Ascendant. The Protectorate is the law of Arcadia and believes order = everything, while they believe they're beloved peacemakers, it appears locals have differing opinions. Auntie's Choice are those who align themselves with the Matriarch of The Outer Worlds 2, Auntie Cleo (her origin is explored in Prime Video's Secret Level series). This branch of her company is Auntie Cleo x Spacer's Choice, an in-game collaboration that promises freedom, fulfillment, and Auntie Cleo product placement in spades. The Order of the Ascendant is a science-based faction, determined to perfect humanity by solving the Universal Equation.
In The Outer Worlds 2, players will travel with six companions and Obsidian has built upon the system considerably, each with personal stakes in the colony's future and of course, their own opinions on you're behaviour. The companions are listed (along with their allegiances) below courtesy of Obsidian Entertainment.
Niles: Another Earth Directorate recruit torn between duty and defection.
Inez: A former experiment from Auntie's Choice with a grafted combat edge and a moral core.
Aza: A chaos-loving Rift worshipper with a taste for violence and room to grow—maybe.
Marisol: A stoic killer from the Order of the Ascendant with calculations to settle.
Tristen: A walking tank and judge from the Protectorate, looking to dispense justice — or redefine it.
Valerie: A floating, chirping support unit with unexpected upgrades and untapped potential.
Fans who pre-purchase can claim the Commander Zane Pack which comes with Commander Zane-theme armor skin, helmet, signature pistol and dagger, and an Earth Directorate drone companion pet. It's worth noting that if fans purchase the title from Battle.net or the Xbox Marketplace, the purchase is cross-play enabled, you just have to link the accounts to pick up and play on either platform.
The Outer Worlds 2 launches October 29, 2025 and fans can pre-purchase today for the new AAA title price of $79.99.

Sonic's Takashi Iizuka dunks on Mario Kart World as Sonic Racing: Crossworlds unveils Hatsune Miku, Persona 5, and Minecraft Steve

Sega has revealed a new trailer for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds at Summer Game Fest 2025, which confirmed that the spirit of the all-timer Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is alive and well. The new Sonic racer features a host of Sega guest characters like Hatsune Miku, Persona 5's Joker, and most importantly, Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza series... oh, and Minecraft's Steve and Alex are there, too, cause why not? The racer is set to launch on September 25 on PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and it's also been confirmed for the new Nintendo Switch 2. Note that the PC and current-gen console versions are more expensive. Sega says via a press release, though, that "there will be a paid upgrade path available for owners of the Nintendo Switch version." After the trailer debuted, Sonic's dad – Sega developer Takashi Iizuka – decided to throw hands at "another kart racing game" by announcing that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will have online cross-play. This was presumably a dig at Mario Kart World, which is odd, since that game is only on Switch 2... unless there was another recently released, major kart racing game we don't know about. Despite not mentioning it at the show, the game's Steam page confirmed that the Minecraft characters will be included as a part of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Season Pass. With every subsequent DLC getting two characters, except for one which gets four. There's also a Sonic Prime pack with variants of Knuckles, Tails, and Amy from the Netflix series coming at launch. So to get all the characters you'll need the Digital Deluxe version which is $90, so maybe don't throw shade at Mario Kart so soon. Shockingly, Sega did not mention CrossWorlds containing SpongeBob SquarePants or other Nickelodeon series (more like SoNick am I right?) like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which were leaked for the game as DLC over the past few weeks. Minecraft characters also leaked alongside these other characters, so I'd wager we might be seeing SpongeBob drifting before too long, anyway. "It looks like Nintendo did a good job" – Sonic boss Takashi Iizuka says Mario Kart World looks more like an action game, whereas Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds "really" focuses on racing and competitive play

I'd hate to be the guy who releases a kart racing game months after Mario Kart World, but Sonic the Hedgehog's dad Takashi Iizuka isn't phased, and says Mario's newest game is a different beast from Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Speaking to GamesRadar+ at Summer Game Fest 2025, Iizuka admits he hasn't yet had a go of the Switch 2 racer, but "from the videos, it looks like Nintendo did a good job of putting in a lot of fun, so it's more of like an action game. I see a lot of that coming through." And to be fair, some of the wild tech that players are pulling off in Mario Kart does have the vibes of an action game. But as for Sonic, the team at Sega is going for a different vibe. "Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds game is different in that it was made by the Sega arcade racing team along with the Sonic Team" Iizuka says, adding "the focus really is on racing and on that competitive play." He also speaks about the central mechanic of CrossWorlds in which you travel between different realms mid-race, "having the travel rings kind of change up the race every time you race. So even if you're playing the same course, you're going to have a different experience." He adds: "And there's something really different in the kart racing genre that we think everyone's going to get really excited about." Iizuka also talked about cross-platform play being important to the team (something that was used as a dig at "another kart racing game" during its Summer Game Fest reveal). "So cross platform play is in there, and you can go ahead and race and have that competitive experience against anyone on any platform. That really makes it exciting." Plus, Sonic Racing has Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza and is rumored to be getting SpongeBob down the line, so suddenly that Cow isn't looking as cool as before. Mario Kart World players have found the optimal way to unlock every vehicle, and it involves driving slowly behind a pedestrian car for 25 minutes.

3 new Game Pass games to play this weekend (June 13-15)
If you're a superstitious person, Friday the 13th might be a bad sign for this weekend. While I can't say you won't encounter any bad luck, what I can promise is that you will have more than enough fun with all the new Game Pass games hitting the service. Last weekend's Xbox Games Showcase showed off too many upcoming Xbox Series X games to count, most of which will be day-one Game Pass games when they come out, but we still have a while to wait for games like Keeper and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. All that excitement may have overshadowed the latest batch of Game Pass games, including a fantastic day one sci-fi survival game like nothing else, a delightful co-op strategy game, and the biggest sports game just in time for the World Cup. The Alters Any sci-fi fan should pay close attention to The Alters, regardless of whether or not you typically like survival games. After crashing onto a mysterious planet, lone survivor Jan Dolski can only survive by creating alternate versions of himself based on different life paths he could've gone down had me made different choices. Between juggling the need to gather resources, expand your base, and overcome obstacles to move your base before the sun rises and cooks you with radiation, you will spend a ton of time interacting with your various Alters. This is where the game shines brightest. The moral and ethical dilemmas, plus the unique issues that arise from alternate versions of the same person trying to work together in a dire situation, are incredibly captivating and thought-provoking. Kingdom: Two Crowns Technically, Kingdom: Two Crowns is the third game in the overall Kingdom series, but you won't have any problems starting here. The first thing you will notice is the game's amazing pixel art, but there's a lot of depth behind this 2D game. You control a monarch who manages and builds up your kingdom under attack by a race of monsters called the Greed. You spend the day building up your defenses using gold before night falls and waves of enemies attack. You don't fight yourself, but simply place units, build walls, and outfit your kingdom to repel invaders, but you can travel out during the day to explore a procedurally generated world to hunt for extra loot. This is a great co-op game, especially since it supports local split-screen play. Kingdom: Two Crowns is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Mobile, and PC. EA Sports FC 25 Xbox knows exactly what it's doing here, and I totally respect it. June 14 marks the beginning of the World Cup, so what better time to give us EA Sports FC 25 so we can play along with the real event? For those who didn't follow the news at the time, the EA Sports FC brand is the same team that made all the FIFA games in the past, but has ditched the license to make their own brand. While the name is different, the top-notch soccer simulation gameplay is exactly the same. New to this game is the new tactical system called FC IQ, Player Roles, and a 5v5 Rush Mode. Of course, there's always the career mode and slightly predatory Ultimate Team. EA Sports FC 25 is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.
