If you've ever spent your morning commute daydreaming about starting afresh with your career, this feature is for you. Each week, our Money team speaks to someone from a different profession to discover what it's really like.
Today we chat to maternity doula Trudi Dawson...
There is no typical day for a doula... which is part of the beauty of the role. Some doulas work every day. For example, I am also an infant feeding specialist, sleep coach and antenatal teacher. So every day, I am working on something to do with someone having a baby! If I am on call for a birth, I will be keeping a close eye on my phone day and night; I could be asked to go and be with a family at short notice. When I have a postnatal doula client, I will usually be with them during school hours, which works well around my family.
Doula costs vary... depending on experience and location. A family might only need some birth preparation sessions, virtual support or full birth and postnatal services. Sometimes, postnatal clients just want help settling at home (which is usually charged by the hour), and others would like regular hours over a period of months. Doulas can charge whatever works.
Doulas tend to be a... very supportive and collaborative bunch. Particularly when being part of an organisation like Doula UK. Often, doulas work in pairs, either with a backup doula or partnering to make sure a family is never let down. I have never had two clients go into labour together, but I have been at two births within 24 hours, which was a great day! When I am booked for postnatal doulaing in advance of the baby being born, I have to be very careful what other clients I put in around that time. It can be a bit of a juggling act but we get very good at it and make sure that, if we've committed to be with you, we will move heaven and earth to fulfil that promise
I teach... antenatal, offer home visits for feeding issues and sleep, plus I support at an NHS breastfeeding clinic, so my clients run into the hundreds. Other doulas might only attend births and do as little as two or three a year. It's a very flexible job that you can scale up and scale down to suit. Doula UK members are required to submit an annual return of how many clients they've worked with so that we can know exactly how many families they have supported. It's rising every year, I'm pleased to say.
Some of the best perks are... the freedom of who I work with and when I work. I am in charge of my own time and that makes me really happy and works well for my family. I'll be honest, there aren't many freebies, although I have been given some really fantastic presents by my clients, which is always so lovely.
I'm usually crying tears of joy... I'm not often crying outright, but I do get a huge emotional lift from my job. The connection I feel with my clients is incomparable to any other relationship. It's very special and unique, and I am always so honoured to be a part of the family for that short time. I often get to share in a woman's first moments as a mum, I get to see her experience her baby's first smile, and sometimes she'll confide in me at her most vulnerable or happy moments. I'd honestly find it a challenge to think of any other job that does all that.
The biggest problem in UK maternity care services is... funding, obviously. But also, I think there is a societal misunderstanding and huge underestimation of the role of birth and bonding in long-term health outcomes. I honestly believe that we could change the world both in terms of physical health and economic wealth if society and the maternity care services were set up to support birth and bonding. But don't start me ranting, I'll be here all day!
British women are not well looked after in the UK... I think society just doesn't honour the child birthing years and their impact as much as it should. But, while I'm here, I think women's issues in general are under-represented, under-researched and under-funded. I think it all starts right at the beginning with our own birth stories.
I don't get clingy clients... being a doula is a real chemistry thing and we often talk about the right jobs finding us. I usually tell someone looking for a doula to look beyond experience and price and go with who they really get on with. This works both ways, so the relationship usually just works okay at the very least. More often, though, you end up working with someone you get on so well with. Some of my clients have ended up friends. Perhaps I'm the clingy doula!
My toughest interaction with a client was when I... doula'd for a woman who knew her baby had passed away already. It was incredibly tough, but also one of the most amazing births I have ever supported. It was deeply powerful and life-affirming, and I was so honoured to be able to support her at such a unique and impressionable time. I definitely cried at that one.
The first birth I ever attended as a bona fide doula after my training... will always stay with me. I was so nervous and felt such a huge sense of imposter syndrome. It was an amazing birth and I'm so lucky my first couple were so trusting and made it such a wonderful experience for me.
More and more people are realising... the power of a well-supported birth. And that, sadly, sometimes the only way to ensure that support is to outsource it. That isn't the same as ensuring a particular type of birth (doulas support ALL births), but our support is continuous, assured and personalised, always. At Doula UK, we've noticed a year-on-year increase in families choosing to birth with a doula or use a doula after the birth for postnatal support at home. I've also noticed much more collaboration with maternity services on the whole, which is wonderful. We're all supporting the same thing and to work together will only benefit the families.
To people who think doulas are a waste of money... I'd probably save the talking for some of my previous clients. Some of whom had their first baby without a doula, and so can compare experiences. I'm confident not one of my previous clients in the last 19 years would consider me a waste of money. To be fair though, before I had my first baby, my sister had a doula and I thought it was all a bit weird when she told me I should have one. I had my baby and regretted it entirely! For my third baby, despite having been a doula for eight years by then, I had two doulas. So greedy!
I like to think of doulas as a... blank canvas, we will provide whatever it is that that family needs. We come with no preconceived notions of what is right or wrong. We help the couple decide what's right for them, we get all the latest evidence-based information we can for them, then we support and advocate for them. As an added bonus, a Doula UK doula also works to a Code of Conduct and a Philosophy to ensure we are all working to the family's best interests at all times.
The best piece of advice I would give an expectant parent is... don't be afraid - to ask questions, to speak your mind, to do it your way, to go with the flow, to disagree or to feel all the feels. Think about after the birth, not just the birth itself. And to book a Doula early!
What's really interesting about trauma is... that it's not often what happens, but how that person feels about it afterwards. I had two births very close to each other. On paper, one was very traumatic, but the mother came out of it feeling amazing, she said she felt like she had "really earned the medal", so to speak. The other mother had a dream birth on paper, but felt utterly traumatised by something a midwife had said to her during her second stage. It really hurt her and affected her experience of her birth and, sadly, how brilliantly she had done throughout. I think the important lesson here is that the idea of trauma lives with the person going through it, not the bystander.
The biggest misconception about my job is... that I do it because I want to cuddle babies. I mean, obviously, that part of it is a great perk. But I do it because I want to help mothers and fathers during this pivotal and defining time. Being a doula is sometimes referred to as "mothering the mother", and that's the part I love. Oh, and that we're all hippies - Doulas come in all flavours!
My first official doula job was for a celebrity... so that probably added to the nerves. In the UK, you don't actually need any training to call yourself a doula. However, to become a Doula UK doula, you need to do an approved training course, then serve a mentorship with one of our Doula Mentors until you become a Recognised Doula UK Doula and agree to a Code of Conduct and a Philosophy. We also provide CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and a resolution process. Along with other things like community circles, an annual conference, insurance discounts, doula connections, etc.
Doulas are absolutely not only accessible to rich people... some doulas also work for free (or maybe one job in four, for example), others also work for organisations that provide free support to those at risk and Doula UK has an access fund that all members contribute to that tries to provide support for marginalised, low income and at-risk pregnant women. I, personally, volunteer one morning per week for the NHS and am part of my local NHS Trust Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP), so I like to think I'm giving back some of my expertise and experience to those who might not be able to afford it.

Top investors in GP surgery firm Assura oppose £1.7bn bid from US private equity giant KKR

Assura's major shareholders have opposed a tie-up with a US private equity giant. Top ten investors Quilter Cheviot and Schroders, which own around 6 per cent and 5 per cent of shares in the NHS landlord respectively, favour a deal with London-listed rival Primary Health Properties (PHP) over US buyout giant KKR. Allianz, Gravis, Baillie Gifford and Columbia Threadneedle have also leant their support to PHP's bid. Shareholders argued that KKR's proposal undervalues Assura, which owns GP surgeries, hospitals and hospices across the UK. A deal with KKR and its partner Stonepeak would see buildings leased to the NHS fall into the hands of overseas owners. But a takeover by PHP would retain the properties under the ownership of a London-listed business. Assura this week said it would weigh up an improved bid from PHP, despite having backed KKR's £1.7billion offer last week. Marcus Phayre-Mudge, manager of Columbia Threadneedle's TR Property Investment Trust, said: 'The KKR bid simply doesn't offer a premium significant enough to justify walking away from this long-term opportunity. 'That's why we strongly support the PHP-Assura merger and encourage other shareholders to do the same.' A Gravis fund manager said PHP's offer was a 'superior choice for long-term investors'. The KKR bid 'risks crystallising value at what may be a cyclical low', they added. Baillie Gifford investment manager Jon Stewart said the KKR deal was not 'in shareholders' best interests' and 'undervalues Assura's long-term growth potential'. KKR's 'best and final' bid values the company at 52.1p per share, although that includes already declared dividends. Without those, the offer is worth 50.42p, analysts said. Most recently, PHP offered £1.68billion to buy Assura but argued last week that its cash and stock bid is worth more as the value is based on share prices. Assura shares slid 0.1 per cent, or 0.05p, to 50.1p. City exodus goes on Direct Line and Ashtead have moved a step closer to joining the exodus from the London stock market. The £3.7billion takeover of insurer Direct Line by Aviva is set to complete next month after talks with the competition watchdog. Aviva said it is pressing ahead with plans for a court to sanction the deal on July 1. This would see the insurer swallowed up by its larger rival and leave the market. Equipment rental firm Ashtead said it is on course to switch its main stock market listing to New York in early 2026. In the past month, drug maker Indivior and fintech firm Wise said they would switch their main listing to New York.

I attended a private dental practice in Birmingham for two-and-a-half years and signed up for treatment via a Denplan payment plan, paying £35 a month to cover my dental costs. Very little was done to my teeth in that time. At the end of February 2024, before I moved to Somerset, I was presented with a leaving certificate from the dentist that said no work was required on my teeth. But to my horror when I signed up to a new dentist a few weeks later, I was told I needed five fillings at a cost of £902. I cannot afford this. I complained to the old dentist but have got nowhere. J.T., Somerset. Sally Hamilton replies: You came to me about your complaint in August last year and I contacted the Birmingham practice, asking the dentist involved to explain how you suddenly needed extensive treatment only weeks after leaving. I suggested that a suitable resolution would be refunding your Denplan payments (£910) or covering the £902 cost of the treatment that needed to be undertaken. Denplan is a popular scheme for dentists and their customers. The plan not only helps patients spread the cost of treatment but provides a predictable income for dentists signed up to it. A patient pays monthly charges based on the treatment a dentist expects a patient to require over the year. It took a week or two to receive a response from the Birmingham practice, but eventually your old dentist agreed to review your records, including those from your new practice, once they had been forwarded, and get back. In late October he replied, stating in his clinical view, your X rays did not suggest that fillings were required at the time he last saw you. He agreed one tooth looked as if it might have required further attention in due course. His defence was 'different dentists hold different clinical opinions'. But he added he didn't want any patient to be 'disappointed or disadvantaged' and offered you a £500 refund of the Denplan payments as a gesture of goodwill. You were not happy as this would still leave you £400 or so short in meeting the new bills, which you said you could not afford. He raised it to £766. Reluctantly you agreed, and requested the payment by cheque, but it did not materialise. You were becoming increasingly stressed, not helped by the fact you are recovering from breast cancer, and only wanted to begin treatment with your new dentist when you knew the funds were forthcoming. By February, the money had still not arrived. With your complaint unresolved, I contacted Denplan. Considering you had forked out for its payment plan all the time you had been with the Birmingham practice, and apparently received little care in return, I was hopeful it would have a view on the matter. You also called Denplan to explain your concerns. These actions seemed to finally do the trick. Denplan investigated and, in early March, came some good news. It thanked me for bringing your case to its attention and to 'ensure a speedy resolution' insisted you go ahead with the required treatment to make you dentally fit at your new practice, and that it would pay these bills on your behalf. It said it was working with your old dentist to recoup the £766 promised to you previously. On March 15, an unnamed person from reception at your previous dentist emailed me to say, 'We came to a resolution with J.T., hope she has contacted you.' While it took a painfully long time to extract payment, you were relieved that the battle with your old dentist was finally over. I agreed that I would not write up your case until your course of treatment was completed, which I am happy to say happened when the last tooth was filled on June 3. My £120 phone credit went down the toilet I'm 87 and had an accident with my simple pay-as-you-go mobile phone when it slipped out of my pocket and into the toilet. It was ruined. It had £120.46 credit on it with my provider Vodafone which I'd purchased with cash via a top up card at my Post Office. I have spent ages on the phone with Vodafone trying to obtain a refund, but they keep asking for a bank card number. I paid by cash, so I requested a cheque. It refused. This is most unfair. B.L., Lincoln. Scam Watch Households should beware a scam text impersonating the Department for Work and Pensions, consumer website Which? warns. Tricksters claim you are eligible for an 'energy allowance' of up to £300 – but this doesn't exist. The text prompts victims to click on a link to apply, states a deadline and claims your application will be void if it is late. But the link leads to a malicious website which aims to take your personal and financial data. Do not click on the link and instead forward the text to 7726. Sally Hamilton replies: You told me this incident happened as you had to keep your phone on you all day awaiting a call from social services. You had been in the garden admiring the surroundings when nature of a different kind called. This was when the phone slid out of your pocket and into the toilet bowl. You fished it out and tried to get it working but all efforts failed. Despite getting the credit amount checked and verified by Vodafone, and spending a long time on the phone to them, they would not send you a cheque. You rightly asked me why it wasn't easier for vulnerable, elderly people like you, who pay with cash to top up their phones, to resolve the situation. You felt bereft after having to give up on your 'faithful friend of 20 years' – a phone that was easy to use with just a couple of buttons – and aggravated you couldn't even get back the money you were owed. Cash users often feel like second-class citizens in such circumstances. I asked Vodafone to dial up its efforts to help you, which it has now done. Its customer care team got in touch directly with you – requesting further information and photos of yourself – before finally sending a cheque. Apparently, refunds aren't usually made by cheque to unregistered pay-as-you-go accounts due to strict anti-money laundering policies. This seems a bit heavy handed for such a small sum, but rules are rules, I suppose. You have purchased a new phone which you find more complicated than your trusty old device. You say your daughter, who works for Age UK, is organising a few lessons for you with the charity on how to use it. Straight to the point In January I organised an office collection for a colleague who had recently become a father and bought a £120 gift voucher for a department store with the money. When he tried to spend it, the balance was £0. The store says it was spent in February on a laptop and they won't be refunding the balance. A.H., West Midlands. The department store apologises but says each gift card has a unique number and a Pin, which only the customer has access to. It is not refunding you. *** I ordered a kitchen from Wickes in 2023 which cost almost £18,500. But last year the work surface started peeling around the tap and draining grooves. Wickes says the damage may have been caused by excessive heat, standing water or my cleaning regime – and the warranty doesn't cover this. It's clear that the damage is only where holes have been drilled and around the draining grooves. C.Q., Wolverhampton. Wickes apologises and is replacing your worktop for you. *** During the storm in January the roof of a nearby shelter for bicycles was blown off and landed on my car bonnet. My car was repaired but my insurer Direct Line demanded I pay the £400 excess, which I did. Since then the owners of the shelter have admitted liability but I have not had the £400 repaid by their insurers. N.L., Newton Mearns. Direct Line apologises and says as it mistakenly led you to believe your excess may be reimbursed by a third-party insurer, it has refunded you the excess. 'Highly talented' university lecturer, 53, killed herself after husband started affair and wanted a divorce, inquest hears

A 'highly talented' university lecturer killed herself after her husband began an extra marital affair and wanted a divorce, an inquest has heard. Dr Claire Dinan began suffering from anxiety and depression following the breakdown of her 28-year marriage when husband Frank O'Friel revealed he had met someone at work, Exeter Coroner's Court heard. The Area Coroner Nicholas Lane said Dr Dinan struggled with her mental health in the weeks and months before she died and was suffering anxiety and depression largely due to the news of her husband's affair. The 53-year-old also believed her two children, who she adored, would be better off without her and thought her death would allow her friends and family to 'get on with their lives'. Dr Dinan had also written a journal which highlighted the turmoil she was going through, adding that the ordeal had left her 'sad and broken'. The inquest heard she had twice made plans to kill herself by using plastic bags and also jumping off cliffs. She had lost weight because she was not eating properly and was also suffering with a lack of sleep in the weeks before her death in April 2023. The coroner said Dr Dinan also thought she was being a burden on her sister and mother, who later discovered her body hanging at her home in Teignmouth, Devon, where she had gone to stay the night before. Dr Dinan completed her PhD at the University of Exeter in geography in the marketing of sustainable tourism in the Business School. The university said the mother of two was 'a highly skilled researcher and educator whose work on sustainable tourism influenced national policy'. The inquest heard Dr Dinan had self referred to Talk Works, Devon NHS Talking Therapies Service, but it was felt she was too high risk for them to take on. Dr Dinan was then in contact with the Community Mental Health Team who she called in the hours before she died, but she was told that she would not be taken on to their caseload as her risk was low. The coroner referred to a 'potential gap in the service' which can have catastrophic consequences but was told that improvements have since been made although funding was still an issue. Mr O'Friel said his wife was a 'very anxious person' who liked routine and certainty. He said her journal 'made it clear to me the turmoil she was going through and had made plans to end her own life'. Days after her death he found notes addressed to family members in her bedroom drawers and a rope tied into a noose. The inquest heard in December 2022 Mr O'Friel wanted them to separate and in February 2023 she was left devastated when told he had met someone at work. Her mother said the marital breakdown left her daughter with a loss of confidence, incoherent with grief and impacted her mental health. The night before she died Dr Dinan was upset at the marital home they shared, so her husband drove her to her mother's home where she stayed the night and called the first response team the next morning to help her. But she was left feeling 'bemused' at their response because 'no one believed her'. When her mother went out for the morning, she returned to find her daughter hanged. She left a note for her parents apologising for what she had done but saying: 'I don't have a role any longer, I cannot go on. All my love, Claire.' Her sister said Claire was 'an intelligent and articulate individual with a very responsible job' but was in a 'sea of chaos' as she took 'one step forward and two steps backwards'. Coroner Mr Lane said: 'Clearly there were many significant issues in recent days, weeks and months prior to her very sad death.' He said Dr Dinan suffered an acute stress reaction to the marital breakdown. Mr Lane said her family were unaware of the extent of her thought processes about killing herself which came to light later in notes and the journal. He said the phone call she had that morning with the mental health team may have contributed to her decision to kill herself but was not the direct cause, as that her 'ongoing personal problems'.
