The discovery proves that the 'Dragon Man' of China is indeed a Denisovan, a long lost ancestral species.

It is the first time a near-complete skull has been definitively linked to the extinct people.

They even had more modern features, like delicate cheekbones.
Their relatively flat lower face doesn't jut out like it does in other primates and more ancient hominins.
The massive size of the skull also suggests a very large body, which could have helped it survive brutal winters in northeastern China.
"Having a well-preserved skull like this one allows us to compare the Denisovans to many more different specimens found in very different places," paleoanthropologist Bence Viola of the University of Toronto, who was not involved in the new study, told National Geographic.
"This means we might be able to compare their body proportions and start thinking about their adaptations to climate, for example."
Scientists have long speculated about the appearance of the mysterious Denisovans.
Other bones relating to the ancient ancestor have been discovered over the decades, such as a robust jawbone found off the coast of Taiwan in the 2000s which was recently attributed to the Denisovans.
But none more intact than the 'Dragon Man' or 'Harbin skull'.

A finger bone found in Denisova Cave, Siberia, in 2010 was the first example of the elusive Denisovans - and where they got their unofficial name.
"It's really exciting to finally have Denisovan DNA from a nearly complete cranium," Janet Kelso, a computational biologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, told Nature.
"We finally have some insights into the cranial morphology of the Denisovans."

In 2021, a team of Chinese researchers made the controversial claim that a bizarre skull they had found could belong to a previously unknown species.
They dubbed this unknown species Homo longi, nicknamed 'Dragon Man', inspired by the Long Jiang Dragon River region where the skull was found.
The fossil is believed to have been hidden by a Chinese labourer for 85 years, before the man's grandson handed the specimen to Qiang Ji, a palaeontologist at Hebei GEO University in Shijiazhuang in 2018.
Ji, who co-authored the original Homo longi paper, suspects the man discovered the artefact himself but failed to report it to authorities.
The grandson claimed the fossil was unearthed the fossil in 1933 during bridge-construction work over the Long Jiang river.
The construction worker then supposedly buried it in an abandoned well, where it remained until a deathbed confession.
When Ji published his findings in 2021, Qiaomei Fu of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing - who worked on the very first Denisovan DNA from the Siberian finger bone - wanted to see if they shared any ancient molecules.
Ji and Fu's team first attempted to extract ancient DNA from a part of the skull called the petrous bone in the inner ear - where DNA might survive after 146,000 years - and from an attached tooth.
They didn't recover any genetic material.
But what they did find was sequence fragments from 95 ancient proteins from the petrous samples.
One protein sequence from the Dragon Man fossil was identical to that of a protein from the Siberian finger bone, as well as Denisovan bones from Tibet and Taiwan, the experts reveal in two papers published in the journals Science and Cell this week.
This protein sequence differed from modern humans and Neanderthals - suggesting the man was likely a Denisovan.
"After 15 years, we give the Denisovan a face," said Fu. "It's really a special feeling, I feel really happy."
It is understood the new species will adopt the Homo longi name, like we humans are Homo sapiens.

Chinese reserachers have said they discovered a statistically significant correlation between consumption of instant coffee and common degenerative disorder AMD Instant coffee drinkers have been handed a new warning by researchers who have discovered the beverage could be linked to a condition that robs people of their sight. Scientists from the Chinese Hubei University of Medicine have warned that people at high risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) should avoid slugging down the popular beverage, which accounts for roughly 13 percent of worldwide coffee consumption. An increasing number of people are living with the eye condition, which affects around 200 million people around the world at present, with 88 million more expected to be diagnosed with the disease in the next 15 years. While it mostly impacts the sharpness of people's eyesight when they reach their 50s, Hubei researchers have found that instant coffee is a potential exacerbating influence. Scientists found a significant statistical link between dry AMD disorder and the drink after studying the genetic data of more than 500,000 people. Corresponding author Siwei Liu, from the the university's Department of Ophthalmology at the Shiyan Taihe Hospital, said the results showed a "genetic correlation" not seen in decaffeinated or non-instant coffee. She said: "Our results revealed a genetic correlation between instant coffee consumption and dry AMD. Instant coffee may increase the risk of AMD, and reducing its intake could help prevent dry AMD." The scientist added that people deemed "at high risk for AMD" should "avoid instant coffee". Researchers believe that AMD is caused by a combination of factors, including diet, smoking habits and genes, with people likely to be more at risk of the disease if they have family members who suffer from it. People are also more at risk later in life, if they are white, obese, or if they suffer from cardiovascular disease, which affects the heart and blood vessels. Symptoms of AMD usually include noticeable loss of sight but not total blindness, with signs of the disease typically including: Visual disturbances like distorted lines and other features Shrinking central vision in one or both eyes Requiring brighter light when reading or working up close Difficulty adapting to dimming lights - such as in a cinemas or dimly lit restaurants Printed words seem increasingly blurry Impaired ability to recognise faces A blurry or blind spot within the field of vision that appears well-defined The Chinese researchers used data from diagnoses of AMD in the UK and additional statistics from the UK Biobank, which details how people consume coffee. Details included in the bank include whether the coffee was instant, ground or decaffeinated, and how much coffee people drank in total. While scientists found a correlation between AMD and instant coffee, they have stressed the results do not immediately indicate that coffee consumption can directly cause the disorder.

"I really feel that we have cleared up some of the mystery surrounding this population," said Qiaomei Fu, lead author of the new research. "After 15 years, we know the first Denisovan skull."It's hoped that this research could help identify Denisovan bones in other museum collections too.

Just three years to limit global warming to 1.5C, top scientists warn
More than 60 of the world's leading climate scientists said in a new report that countries are continuing to burn record amounts of fossil fuels while felling carbon-rich forests – leaving the international goal in peril, the BBC reports. The report said that the global 'carbon budget' – the amount of CO2 that can be emitted to give a 50% chance of keeping warming limited to 1.5C – had shrunk. In 2020, scientists estimated that humanity could emit 500 billion more tonnes of CO2 for a 50% chance of breaching the limit. If emissions remain at their current rate – around 40 billion per year – that gives roughly three years before the 'carbon budget' is spent. The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015 by nearly 200 countries, set a target of limiting warming to 1.5C above temperatures set in the late 1800s before global industrialisation. It is generally agreed to be a target measured over a 20-year average, so that even while 2024 was more than 1.5C hotter than pre-industrial temperatures, this does not constitute a breach. The current rate of global warming is 0.27C per decade, which is much faster than at any point in the Earth's history. If this keeps up, the planet will breach the 1.5C target by 2030. Professor Piers Forster, lead author of the report and director of the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures at the University of Leeds, told the BBC: 'Things are all moving in the wrong direction. 'We're seeing some unprecedented changes and we're also seeing the heating of the Earth and sea-level rise accelerating as well.' There are hopes that CO2 can be sucked out of the atmosphere in a bid to reverse global warming, however scientists caution against seeing this as a solution. Joeri Rogelj, professor of climate science and policy at Imperial College London, said: 'For larger exceedance [of 1.5C], it becomes less likely that removals [of CO2] will perfectly reverse the warming caused by today's emissions." Over the last decade or so, this rate of heating is more than doubled since the 1970s and 1980s and is 25% than in the 2000s and 2010s. Dr Matthew Palmer of the UK Met Office said this was a 'very worrying number' over a short period of time. Much of this extra heat – around 90% – is absorbed by the oceans, wrecking havoc on marine life and raising sea levels because ice melts. While the warnings from the report are stark, its authors said that the rate of emissions increases appears to be slowing as new clean tech is being used.
