Centuries-old museum specimens unlock mysteries of South Asian treeshrews

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have resolved longstanding taxonomic ambiguities surrounding South Asian treeshrews - small, insectivorous mammals often misidentified due to their superficial resemblance to squirrels. Drawing upon century-old specimens housed in national collections, the study offers fresh insight into the morphological diversity of these elusive creatures.
Their study was published in Ecology and Evolution, an international journal, on Friday (April 25, 2025). The authors of the study are Manokaran Kamalakannan, Mukesh Thakur, Nithyanandam Marimuthu, Subhojit Pramanik, and Dhriti Banerjee.
Treeshrews are neither true shrews nor squirrels, but belong to a distinct order called Scandentia. While they share a similar size and arboreal lifestyle with squirrels, treeshrews can be easily distinguished by their elongated snouts, reduced whiskers, moist nasal pads, and insectivorous or frugivorous diet.
Historically misclassified as primates, the treeshrews – some arboreal, some semi-arboreal, and others terrestrial – are now recognised as an ancient lineage of mammals endemic to South and Southeast Asia.
Dr. Kamalakannan, the lead author and scientist at the ZSI's Mammal and Osteology Section, conceptualised and led the study from data collection to the final morphological analysis. 'By examining decades-old museum specimens, we have shed light on how these fascinating mammals differ from one another,' he said.
'This clarity is essential for accurate species identification and for shaping effective conservation policies. When analysed with modern techniques, museum specimens reveal patterns of variation that were previously hidden, helping us address long-standing taxonomic ambiguities,' he said.
Co-author Dr. Marimuthu, who led the complex multivariate analyses, said: 'The morphometric patterns we uncovered offer strong statistical support for separating these species, which were once thought to overlap significantly in size and shape.'
Most strikingly, the study overturns long-standing assumptions about the Nicobar treeshrew. Once believed to be the smallest among South Asian treeshrews, the analysis reveals it is the largest in South Asia and the third-largest of all 23 known treeshrew species globally.
More research advised
'There is a need for genetic studies to support a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of South Asian treeshrews. This should be a priority for future research,' Dr. Thakur, another co-author, said.
Dr. Banerjee, also the Director of ZSI, underlined the implications of the findings. 'This study is a major step forward in mammalian conservation in South Asia. Accurate taxonomy is fundamental to protecting species, particularly insular endemics like the Nicobar treeshrew, which faces growing ecological pressures,' she said.
The research utilised a wide dataset from South Asian treeshrew specimens preserved for over a century at the ZSI's National Zoological Collections, a repository of India's faunal diversity, in Kolkata.
The scientists investigated the morphological variation among three species – Madras treeshrew (Anathana ellioti), northern treeshrew (Tupaia belangeri), and Nicobar treeshrew (Tupaia nicobarica) – using museum specimens collected over a wide spatial and temporal range of India and Myanmar and combined with existing published datasets.
These three species occupy distinct and non-overlapping geographical areas in India and Southeast Asia.
The scientists analysed 22 cranial measurements and four external traits to evaluate inter- and intraspecific morphological differentiation, employing distance-based morphometric approaches validated by multivariate analyses. Their findings revealed considerable heterogeneity in cranial morphology, with three species exhibiting clear differentiation, despite slight overlaps in morphospace.

Guwahati: The latest edition of the scientific journal Zootaxa reports the discovery of a new bat species — the Himalayan long-tailed Myotis (Myotis himalaicus) — in the Himalayan region, and corrects a long-standing error in Indian scientific literature by confirming that the East Asian free-tailed bat (Tadarida insignis), not the European species, is found in India. The tally of Indian bat species currently stands at 135 species, according to the journal published on Thursday. The Himalayan long-tailed Myotis belongs to the Myotis frater complex — a group of morphologically similar bats found across a wide range, including eastern China, Taiwan, central and southeastern Siberia, Korea, Japan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, the journal said. Scientists — Uttam Saikia from the Zoological Survey of India (Shillong), Rohit Chakravarty of the Nature Conservation Foundation (Mysuru), Gabor Csorba from the Hungarian Natural History Museum (Budapest), MA Laskar from St. Anthony's College (Shillong), and Manuel Ruedi of the Natural History Museum of Geneva — had collected the sample in May 2021, as part of a fresh reassessment of India's high-altitude bat diversity. After analysing the DNA of the species and correlating it with other known species for four years, a statement issued by the scientists read, 'This new bat named Himalayan long-tailed Myotis (Myotis himalaicus) was described based on specimens collected from higher elevation areas of Uttarakhand and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.' Believed to be native to the southern slopes of the Himalayas, this species has so far been spotted in Deodar, Pine, and Cedar forests, where it appears to be relatively uncommon. The journal added the East Asian free-tailed bat to the bat fauna of India. Based on detailed study of the specimen collected from Uttarakhand and genetic analysis, the researchers revealed that the globally Data Deficient East Asian free-tailed bat had been mistakenly identified as the European free-tailed bat (Tadarida teniotis). This species is distributed in the Himalayan region of India, as well as China, Taiwan, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. The journal also sheds light on Babu's Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus babu), a species first discovered over a century ago in the Murree Hills of Pakistan and apparently common in the western and central Himalayas. Due to its morphological similarities with the Javan Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus javanicus), a species native to Southeast Asia, subsequent researchers had mistakenly considered it a synonym. However, the study confirms that Babu's Pipistrelle is a distinct species, with a distribution spanning Pakistan, the western Himalayas of India, and Nepal. The study also provided the first specimen-based confirmation of the presence of a few other bat species — Savi's Pipistrelle (Hypsugo savii) and the Japanese greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus nippon) — in India, which had so far only been mentioned based on either doubtful specimens or zoogeographic grounds. 'The study is expected to have significant implications in documentation and conservation of small mammalian fauna of India and also give a boost to further studies in the Indian Himalayas. With this revisionary study, the confirmed tally of Indian bat species currently stands at 135 species which is likely to go up as studies continue,' Zoological Survey of India director Dhriti Banerjee said.

Building on previous research suggesting that clay particles could interact with viruses, the IIT Guwahati team meticulously investigated how bentonite clay interacts specifically with SARS-CoV-2. Their research revealed that when the virus is present in a neutral pH saltwater solution at room temperature, it binds effectively with the clay particles. This binding accelerates sedimentation, with virus-laden clay particles settling more rapidly. By observing and measuring this accelerated sedimentation, researchers can accurately determine both the presence and concentration of the virus in a sample. The implications of this discovery are substantial, say some experts. While PCR tests are highly accurate, they are costly, require specialised equipment and trained personnel, and often depend on significant infrastructure, limiting their accessibility in remote or under-resourced areas. Antigen tests, while faster, can be less sensitive than PCR. In contrast, the IIT Guwahati method requires minimal equipment, is inherently affordable, and offers a potentially rapid diagnostic solution suitable for widespread deployment. In his valedictory address at World Environment Day 2025 celebrations hosted by the Zoological Survey of India, Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and EIACP Centre on Island Biodiversity at Sri Vijaya Puram, Port Blair, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the pivotal role of students and academic institutions in driving long-term environmental change. Emphasising the hazards that micro-plastics posed to the food chain and the suspected linkage to severe health issues, including cancer, Mr. Prakash Babu urged administrators to strictly enforce ban on plastic bags and promote biodegradable alternatives and citizens to refrain from using single-use plastics. He noted that children often have the power to influence household habits. The Vice-Chancellor also gave a call for sustained action throughout the year, instead of symbolic events to protect the environment on a single day. Further, the V-C said that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands held the potential to become a national model for responsible tourism. Being relatively less polluted, the islands represent the ideal environment of ecological balance and responsible tourism. He later visited the ZSI museum at Sri Vijaya Puram. C.
