Iran's top nuclear official has confirmed that Russia is set to build eight nuclear power plants in Iran under an existing bilateral agreement, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), shared the update on Monday during a visit by members of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy committee to the AEOI headquarters in Tehran. Eslami revealed that four of the planned reactors will be built in the southern province of Bushehr, marking a significant expansion of Iran's nuclear energy infrastructure in cooperation with Moscow.

Sixth round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and U.S. on June 15, says Oman Foreign Minister
Iran and the United States will hold a sixth round of negotiations over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear programme this Sunday (June 15, 2025) in Oman, the sultanate's Foreign Minister said on Thursday (June 12, 2025), as regional tensions have spiked in recent days. The announcement by Oman's Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi comes as the U.S. is drawing down the presence of staffers who are not deemed essential to operations in the Middle East and their loved ones due to the potential for regional unrest. Meanwhile, there have been warnings that ships could be targeted in regional waters over the tensions. Mr. Al-Busaidi made the announcement on the social platform X. 'I am pleased to confirm the 6th round of Iran US talks will be held in Muscat this Sunday the 15th,' he wrote. Iran for days had been saying there would be talks, but Oman, which is serving as the mediator, had not confirmed them until now. There was no immediate comment from the US. Reaching a deal is one of the several diplomatic priorities being juggled by US President Donald Trump and his trusted friend and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. An accord could see the US lift some of its crushing economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for it drastically limiting or ending its enrichment of uranium. But a failure to get a deal could see tensions further spike in a Middle East on edge over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. Iran's economy, long ailing, could enter a free fall that could worsen the simmering unrest at home. Israel or the US might carry out long-threatened airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. And Tehran may decide to fully end its cooperation with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog and rush toward a bomb. Iran and the U.S. have held previous talks in Muscat and Rome.

‘Deal within reach': Iran threatens US amid hopeful nuclear progress
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi says a nuclear deal with the US is 'within reach' as the sixth round of indirect talks is set to begin Sunday in Muscat. He stressed that any agreement must allow Iran to continue uranium enrichment under IAEA supervision and require effective sanctions relief. Meanwhile, Iran's Defense Minister warned that if talks fail, US military bases in the region would be targeted. Tensions rise as both hope and threats shape the negotiations. Show more Show less

Oman to host US-Iran nuclear talks on Sunday: FM
AP image Oman said Thursday it will host a sixth round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran over the weekend amid escalating tensions between the long-time foes. "I am pleased to confirm the 6th round of Iran US talks will be held in Muscat this Sunday," Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said in a post on X. Tehran and Washington have held five rounds of talks since April to thrash out a new nuclear deal to replace the 2015 accord that Trump abandoned during his first term in 2018. The announcement by Oman came just hours after President Donald Trump said US personnel were being moved from the potentially "dangerous" Middle East. Trump also reiterated that he would not allow Iran to have an atomic bomb amid mounting speculation that Israel could strike Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran threatened Wednesday to target US military bases in the region if conflict breaks out. Trump had until recently expressed optimism about the talks, but said in an interview published Wednesday that he was "less confident" about reaching a deal. Since returning to office in January, Trump has revived his "maximum pressure" campaign on Tehran, backing nuclear diplomacy but warning of military action if it fails. The US president says he has pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold off striking Iran's nuclear facilities to give the talks a chance, but has increasingly signalled that he is losing patience.
