Three Ceredigion beaches to fly Blue Flags this year
Three Ceredigion beaches will fly Blue Flags in 2025.
Borth, Llangrannog, and Tresaith have been recognised for their 'excellent' water quality, facilities, and safety provisions.
In addition to the Blue Flags, six other beaches have been given Seaside Awards, and four have received the rural Green Coast Award.
The Seaside Award is given to beaches that meet recognised water quality standards and have adequate public facilities, safety provisions, and management.
Councillor Clive Davies, Ceredigion County Council's cabinet member for the economy and regeneration, said: "I am delighted to see that Blue, Green, and Seaside Award flags/plaques will be erected at Ceredigion's most popular bathing beaches in 2025, and we are fully expecting to see many visitors and locals alike enjoying themselves on beaches along the Ceredigion coast this summer."
He also expressed his gratitude to the individuals, groups, organisations, and businesses that have volunteered their time to support the Caru Ceredigion initiative.
This includes regular litter picks and the promotion of environmental conservation, wildlife education, and beach/water safety activities.
Mr Davies said: "Without this long-standing support, we would not be able to put forward so many of our beaches and successfully obtain these prestigious coastal awards, which places Ceredigion beaches amongst the very best of coastal destinations in Wales and the UK whilst acting as a key driver for the Ceredigion economy."
The beaches that have achieved prestigious coastal awards in 2025 are:
Blue Flag (Overall excellent water quality standard): Borth, Llangrannog, and Tresaith.
Seaside Award (Overall good or sufficient water quality standard): Clarach, Aberystwyth North, Aberystwyth South, New Quay Harbour, New Quay Dolau/North, and Aberporth.
Green Coast Award (Overall excellent water quality standard): Llanrhystud, Cilborth-Llangrannog, Penbryn, and Mwnt.
Beachgoers are advised to swim at a lifeguarded beach between the red and yellow flags, which denote the designated swimming areas patrolled by RNLI Lifeguards at Borth, Clarach, Aberystwyth North, Aberystwyth South, New Quay Harbour, Llangrannog, Tresaith, and Aberporth beaches.

New School Build Achieves Record-Breaking BREEAM Score
Sustainability consultancy RedSix, in collaboration with Wynne Construction and Ceredigion County Council, has achieved the highest-ever BREEAM 2018 New Construction (Education) rating in the UK. Aeron Valley School in Felinfach has officially been awarded an Outstanding BREEAM rating of 93.69%, setting a new benchmark for sustainable education buildings nationwide. The project, a 2,457m² new-build school delivered under the BREEAM 2018 New Construction fully fitted (FF) education scheme, reflects the forward-thinking sustainability ambitions of Ceredigion County Council and Wynne Construction, RedSix said. RedSix acted as both BREEAM Assessor and Advisory Professional (AP) throughout the project lifecycle. 'From the very first design discussions, we knew this project had the potential to set a new standard,' said Gareth Davies, Managing Director of RedSix. 'It's a testament to what's possible when sustainability is embedded from day one, with full collaboration from all stakeholders.' Regular AP site visits, close coordination and a shared vision for net-zero performance helped the team meet stringent BREEAM criteria – including key credits under Ene01 and Ene04. The school incorporates air source heat pumps and solar panels, providing a low-carbon, future-proof solution for the region. Richard Wynne of Wynne Construction added: 'We are incredibly proud to have played a part in achieving this landmark rating. The result of this achievement is a reflection of the collaborative approach by the project team. This school is not just a building – it's a symbol of sustainable progress for future generations.'

Mum arranged for child sex offender to stay over for a week to rape her own young daughter
Mum arranged for child sex offender to stay over for a week to rape her own young daughter 'You discussed at length in disgustingly graphic detail what you intended to do' John Davies The mother of a young girl arranged for a registered sex offender to sexually abuse her daughter, discussing in 'graphic detail' how the assault would take place. The woman arranged for John Davies, 45, to visit her home with the intention of him assaulting her child. The two adults had explicit conversations about the sexual abuse that would happen to the child, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard this week. Davies, from Staffordshire, and the mother discussed what clothing the girl would wear and he sent a picture of his collection of sex toys, commenting how he intended to use them. She and Davies planned for him to stay at the woman's home for a week. Don't miss a court report by signing up to our crime newsletter here Davies was handed an extended 20-year prison sentence, comprising 14 and a half years in custody and five and a half years on an extended licence for his crimes. The court was told that Davies was a registered sex offender and had been previously imprisoned in 2016 for offences including attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and attempted sexual activity with a child under 16. Article continues below Between 2022 and 2023, Davies violated a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) a total of five times. In April, 2024, he told his offender manager that he had a second phone at his home and that he needed help. On April 27, 2024, police recovered the phone from a kitchen cupboard at his property. The phone was analysed and found to have 132 indecent images of children at category A - the most serious; 35 at category B and 77 at category C. Prosecutor Josh Daley said: "The images showed young girls, aged six to nine, being raped and in pain. The defendant was asked what age he liked and he said: 'Ideally seven to 10 being f*****'. He used 15 instant messaging services and he usernames without informing the police." The court heard the defendant also engaged in a chat with someone on Kik but it was unclear whether she was a child or not. The most serious charge was that involving the arrangements he made with the woman in Birmingham to rape her daughter. Mr Daley said: "He sent a picture of his sex toy collection and discussed how he would use gags, restraints and a collar. He said: 'It is a fantasy of mine. I want somebody to give me a chance'. He also sent a category A image of a child aged between seven and nine." Paul Cliff, mitigating, said Davies telling his offender manager about the phone led to the convictions, adding that no physical abuse took place on the girl. Judge Graeme Smith said in his view Davies was 'undoubtedly dangerous'. He said: "You discussed at length in disgustingly graphic detail what you intended to do." The judge added there was additional degradation and humiliation intended to the victim by the use of various sex toys. Davies pleaded guilty to arranging the commission of a child sex offence (rape of a child under 13); attempted sexual communication with a child; distributing a class A indecent image of a child; three charges of making indecent images of children; and three charges of breaching a SHPO. A jury found him guilty of arranging/facilitating the commission of a child sex offence – rape/assault by penetration of a child under 13. Davies was placed on the sex offenders' register for life.
