Madras High Court allows PMK rally with strict conditions to prevent law and order issues

CHENNAI: Amid apprehensions expressed over the likelihood of unseemly events during the PMK's ambitious 'Chithirai Muzhu Nilavu' rally and conference scheduled to be held on May 11, the Madras High Court on Thursday ordered the party to furnish an undertaking to the police for strict adherence to the pre-conditions to ensure no law and order problems are created.
A division bench of justices N Mala and G Arul Murugan issued the orders while disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking to deny permission to the PMK's conference to be held at Thiruvidanthai, near Tiruporur.
'The respondent (PMK) shall furnish an undertaking to the North Zone Police IG to the effect that the conditions imposed by the police will scrupulously be adhered to,' the bench said in the order. It also instructed the organisers of the conference to ensure none of the participants carry any arms or ammunitions while attending the event.
The bench directed the North Zone IG to strictly monitor the conduct of the conference and deploy additional contingents of the personnel to ensure no law and issues are created during the programme. Further, it granted liberty to government authorities to impose any such conditions that are deemed necessary to regulate participants, apart from the 42 conditions already imposed.
The PIL, filed by J Muthukumar of Madambakkam, recalled the widespread violence and large scale damaging of public property during a similar PMK rally in 2013, and sought the court to restrain the officials concerned from granting permission to the rally and conference which coincides with the Chithirai Pournami festival.

Solution To In-Party Squabbles On Cards, Says S Ramadoss

Chennai: Amid the leadership tussle with his son Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss on Monday said things were going well and that the matter was expected to be resolved. In a cryptic remark, the 85-year-old veteran also said he was "bidding farewell" to the media, while answering scribes' queries here. While the media was keen to know what was happening in Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), he said he could not share with them what the journalists needed. "Everything is going well. So a solution will come. And when it happens, you won't be unaware of that. That solution will be a good one for this party and country," he said. "Requesting you to be patient till then, I bid farewell to you," he said. "I bid farewell to you," he repeated. Asked about his earlier comments on having reservation over aligning with the BJP and whether he stuck to the stand, he said he cannot say anything now. He said the party workers were like his relatives and guide, and many looked up to him like a God. "I will do anything for them, their welfare and progress," he said. Party workers were always by his side. PMK was a part of the BJP-led NDA during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Murugan devotee conference pre-event:  Tamil Nadu government apprehends law and order issues

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday opposed the Hindu Munnani's plea for extended pre-event celebrations ahead of the Murugan devotee conference in Madurai and informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that it apprehended law and order issues and 'a situation like the recent stampede in Bengaluru'. Hence, it was willing to grant permission for only three days to the outfit for installing temporary miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at the 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu'. The Hindu Munnani, represented by State secretary S. Muthukumar, had filed a petition before the High Court seeking a direction to the police to grant permission for installing miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at Amma Thidal near the Vandiyur toll gate and conducting pujas. The petitioner said the Hindu Munnani had decided to arrange a gathering of devotees of Lord Murugan on June 22. The miniatures of 'Arupadai Veedugal' were planned to be installed at the venue from June 10 to June 22. Pujas would be performed and prasadam would be distributed to the devotees, he said, adding that the Sthalapuranam of the six abodes would be displayed and devotees would chant Kanda Shashti Kavacham and Thiruppugazh. Spiritual and cultural programmes would be held at the venue, which is a private land, and the land owner had given his consent, he said. A representation was made to the Madurai City Police for permission to use sound amplifiers at the event. A representation was also made for arranging darshan of the miniatures from June 10 to June 22. The police rejected permission for using microphone sets and installing miniatures and temporary models, the petitioner said. He alleged that a police team went to the place where the miniatures were being made and threatened workers and volunteers not to proceed with the work. He sought a direction to the police to grant permission for installing the miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at the venue and conducting the pujas. The government told the court that the Hindu Munnani had not responded to all the questions put forth by the police. The organisation, however, submitted that it had done so. Justice B. Pugalendhi directed the Hindu Munnani to furnish its response to the questions and the police to take a decision by June 12. The court permitted the petitioner to proceed with making the miniatures. However, no puja shall be conducted for now, the court said. It posted the matter for hearing on June 13.

MLA protests Salem Municipal Corporation's failure to build girivalam path at temple

SALEM: Salem West MLA R Arul staged a sit-in protest on the Salem Municipal Corporation (SMC) premises on Monday, expressing concerns over the civic body's failure to construct a 'girivalam' path at Kuranguchavadi Perumal Malai. The PMK legislator criticised the negligence of the SMC administration. While speaking to reporters, Arul said he had submitted a request to chief minister M K Stalin for the construction of the girivalam path. The state govt allocated Rs 94 lakh for this project. "However, the road has not been constructed," he said. He said the SMC had recently released a report claiming that the girivalam path had been completed. The MLA said when he had inquired about the project, Salem Corporation superintending engineer Selva Vinayagam had not responded. Arul indicated that he would raise these concerns directly with the chief minister during the latter's visit to Salem on Wednesday and Thursday. The MLA ended his protest after corporation officials held discussions with him.
