Mongolia PM resigns after losing confidence vote
Mongolian prime minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene has resigned after losing a confidence vote in parliament.
The vote followed days of mass protests over corruption allegations - fuelled by social media posts about his son's lavish birthday party and engagement.
Oyun-Erdene, who took office in 2021, will remain as caretaker PM until a successor is appointed within 30 days.
"It was an honour to serve my country and people in times of difficulties, including pandemics, wars, and tariffs," he said after the vote.
He had to stand down as he fell short of a majority, or 64 of the 126-seat parliament. Some 82 lawmakers took part in the secret ballot, 44 of whom voted for Oyun-Erdene, while 38 voted against him.
Hundreds of protesters, many of them young people, had been taking to the streets for two weeks before the vote, demanding Oyun-Erdene's resignation.
In particular, they pointed to his family's - especially his son's - apparent lavish lifestyle, questioning the source of their wealth.
Mongolians have circulated on social media an extravagant wedding proposal by Oyun-Erdene's son, as well as expensive fashion items.
Oyun-Erdene has rejected allegations of corruption, accusing critics of launching a smear campaign against him.
According to Transparency International, a watchdog, Mongolia has seen worsening corruption since Oyun-Erdene came into power. Last year, it was ranked 114th out of 180 countries in terms of government transparency.
A former communist state sanwiched between Russia and China, Mongolia has been transitioning to democracy since the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.
Corruption is a persistent problem. Last year, US prosecutors sought to forfeit former Mongolian PM Sukhbaatar Batbold's two New York apartments that he allegedly bought using stolen mining funds.
Batbold, who served from 2012 to 2015, denied wrongdoing.
In recent years, Mongolia has sought to build closer ties with the West, counting the United States and European countries as part of its "third neighbour" foreign policy.

Tesla Stock Is Sinking. Trump-Musk Tensions Are Just One Reason Why.
Tesla shares slid Thursday, extending Wednesday's decline. The losses come as reports this week showed sales continued to decline in May across several European countries, and CEO Elon Musk criticized President Trump's signature budget legislation. Recent declines have rolled back some of Tesla's gains after CEO Elon Musk in April said he would spend more time at his (TSLA) shares dropped Thursday, falling for a second straight day, amid a public spat between CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump. The stock was down close to 9% in recent trading, extending Wednesday's decline. It has lost about one-quarter of its value since the start of the year. Musk left his role in the Trump administration last week. He has since attacked the Trump-backed budget reconciliation bill currently working its way through Congress, calling it a "disgusting abomination," and urging the Senate to "kill the bill." Trump at an event with the Chancellor of Germany on Thursday said he is "very disappointed" in Musk's recent attacks. Trump said that Musk "knew everything" about the bill, and claimed that the Tesla CEO only turned against the bill because of the cuts it would make to electric vehicle mandates and programs. "Elon and I had a great relationship," Trump said. "I don't know if we will anymore." "Whatever," Musk said in a post responding to a video of Trump's comments. "Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill." In a separate post, Musk called Trump's assertion that he knew details about the bill "false," and said that members of Congress did not read it before voting on it. "Without me, Trump would have lost the election," Musk posted minutes later. Tesla has also gotten more disappointing sales news in recent days: Auto industry groups in several European countries reported sales data for May showing declines in Tesla sales as overall EV sales rose. Despite the weak sales, some analysts have pointed to the planned launch of fully autonomous Tesla rides in Austin, Texas this month as a coming positive catalyst for the stock. The stock's recent declines have rolled back some of Tesla's gains after Musk in April said he would spend more time at his companies, and left the Trump administration in May. ‘Premeditated genocide': Brazil's Lula slams Israel over Gaza war
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused Israel of carrying out 'premeditated genocide' in Gaza during a visit to Paris, as it emerged the military had killed at least 52 people in its latest onslaught in the besieged coastal enclave where a crippling blockade is fuelling starvation. 'What is happening in Gaza is not a war. It's a genocide being carried out by a highly prepared army against women and children,' said Lula at a joint news conference in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday. '[It is] a premeditated genocide from a far-right government that is waging a war, including against the interests of its own people,' he said of Israel's 20-month offensive, which has killed at least 54,607 Palestinians so far, according to the enclave's Health Ministry. At least 52 people were killed on Thursday, including women and children, according to medical sources, who spoke to Al Jazeera, amid growing concern about deadly incidents at aid distribution sites run by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation since last week. While Lula has previously used the term 'genocide' to characterise Israel's actions in Gaza, Macron has reserved judgement, saying last month that it was not for a 'political leader to use the term, but up to historians to do so when the time comes'. The Brazilian leader's condemnation of Israel's offensive came as German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told his visiting Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave in accordance with 'prevailing international law'. Last week, Wadephul had said Germany was assessing 'whether what is happening in Gaza is in line with international law' and that arms sales to Israel would be evaluated on this basis. Wadephul also said he was 'concerned about the extremely tense situation in the West Bank', decrying the Israeli government's announcement that it would allow 22 more settlements in the occupied territory, saying it threatened the two-state solution further. On Thursday, King Abdullah of Jordan praised Spain for recognising Palestine and calling for an end to the war in Gaza during a meeting with King Felipe in Madrid. He said work was underway to gain European support. Jordan's state news agency Petra cited him as saying work was under way to harness European support for an Arab plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing its residents, as threatened by US President Donald Trump this year.

This industrial giant could be about to break out, charts show
Shares of Caterpillar (CAT) have stalled out in recent weeks, pounding out a sideways consolidation phase just below the 200-day moving average. We're noting a confluence of indicators that suggests a move above $355 could signal a new uptrend phase with an upside target above $400. After a significant rally off the April low, CAT pushed higher into early May when the European tariff news caused shares to gap up to the 200-day moving average. For the past three weeks, the price has remained in a tight trading range between the 200-day moving average around $355 and the upper end of the price gap from early May. That $355 level also represents a 61.8% retracement of the downtrend from the January peak to the April low, creating a "confluence of resistance" where multiple indicators line up around the same price point. This would suggest that a break above $355 would represent a significant breakout driven by an influx of buying power. The daily chart also provides a clear risk management method based on technical analysis principles, as a break below $340 would resolve this recent consolidation phase to the downside. If CAT pushes below this short-term support level, that would mean a failure to push above the 200-day moving average and a breakdown of gap support on the way back down. Checking on the weekly chart, we can respect the long-term secular uptrend as Caterpillar has generally remained above an upward-sloping 150-week moving average since the COVID low. There were three tests of the 150-week moving average since 2020, with the most significant break appearing in September 2022. The sell-off earlier this year brought CAT right down to the 150-week moving average as well, serving as further confirmation of the importance of this trend-following mechanism. Last month, the weekly percentage price oscillator generated its third strong buy signal since 2019. The first bullish signal came in May 2020, just as CAT was recovering from the Covid selloff. Another buy signal occurred in October 2022, confirming a bullish phase as Caterpillar traded back above its 150-week moving average. We observed in May yet another bullish PPO reversal, suggesting that the test of the 150-week moving average has resolved into a new uptrend phase. Finally, we can use a point & figure chart to strip out the noise of day-to-day price movements and focus instead on the overall trend. Point & figure charts show bullish trends in a column of X's and then switch to a column of O's when the price action reverses to a bearish trend. The most important buy signal is a "double top breakout," when a column of X's breaks above a previous column of X's. Here we can see that Caterpillar is very close to a clear double top breakout, with a push above $355.14 confirming a new buy signal from this classic charting approach. The point & figure chart also lines up well with the daily price chart for risk management purposes, as a break below the $340 level would confirm a failure at resistance.
