Brit tourist dies in 'drowning' in late evening holiday swim

Daily Mirror22-05-2025

A British tourist is suspected to have drowned after getting into difficulty in the sea. The holidaymaker was taking advantage of the good weather in the popular holiday resort of Fuengirola and went for a late-evening swim.
Police said today onlookers saw him in difficulties and pulled him out of the water after calling emergency services. There was nothing the emergency responders could do to save him when they reached the beach and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy happened near a beach restaurant called Chiringuito Martin Playa. The alarm was raised just after 9pm last night.Police sources confirmed the dead man was British and was staying at a nearby hotel. He has not been named.
A spokesman for a regional emergency response coordination centre confirmed: 'A man died yesterday evening at a beach in Fuengirola.
'Emergency responders received the first of several calls around 9.10pm, saying a man was drowning in the sea off Fuengirola's seafront. According to the callers he was about 60 metres out and was having difficulties getting out of the water. National and local police were mobilised along with coastguards and paramedics.
'Two members of the public were able to get the man out of the water but despite the efforts of the emergency responders to save his life, there was nothing they could do to revive him. He was pronounced dead on the beach before he could be taken to hospital.'
An Irish holidaymaker drowned on a nearby Costa del Sol beach during Spain's historic blackout last month. Darren Pilson, 53, from Howth, Co Dublin, was pulled out of the water after getting into difficulties off a beach in the resort of La Carihuela near Torremolinos.
A Dutchman who helped pull him out of the water after seeing him in difficulties revealed he passed away after they were unable to contact the emergency services by phone or online following the power outage. Meeno van Oorschot also claimed in a Facebook post the dead man was recently widowed and had died in front of relatives including a son he had taken on holiday following their loss.
A death notice published a few days after the tragedy said: 'The death occurred of Darren Pilson, Howth, Co. Dublin on April 28. Tragically in Spain. Predeceased by his sister Tracy and dad Pat. Darren will be very sadly missed by his adored son Sonny, mother Maureen, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, neighbours and his wide circle of friends. May he rest in peace.'
On Monday night a 39-year-old British woman died after plunging from a scenic beauty spot in Majorca. She was rushed to hospital critically injured that morning following the drama.
She fell about 60 feet from a lookout point in the Palma neighbourhood of es Jonquet overlooking the sea. Local police and paramedics who responded to an emergency call stabilised her at the scene before putting a 'Green Alert' in place to make sure she got to hospital as quickly as possible by clearing traffic for the ambulance transporting her.
The alert was raised around 8.30am on Monday. The unnamed Brit was admitted to an intensive care unit at Son espases Hospital in Palma as police began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Hospital sources said yesterday she had died the night she was admitted to hospital. Insiders close to the probe into the woman's death have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with what happened and it was not being treated as a crime.

Tactic people smugglers use to get young male migrants past French cops onto dinghies to UK revealed

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PEOPLE smugglers are using women and children as human shields in a diversion tactic to get past French police - before mostly men make it onto a dinghy. Families with young babies and kids were put at the front of the queue of migrants entering the vast beach from the sand dunes in Gravelines, near Calais, yesterday with young men trailing behind. Instead, officers kettled the group and successfully marched them off back into the sand dunes. But, when the time was right and the police thought they had taken the group off the beach, a group of mostly men suddenly sprinted off into the sand dunes before making a break for it back onto the beach. Most of the migrants with children did not return to the beach. It comes after senior Labour minister Darren Jones was slammed after suggesting on BBC's Question Time that the majority of migrants entering by small boats that he had seen were women and children. A dramatic cat and mouse game followed yesterday with tear gas being fired over Gravelines beach in an attempt to keep migrants away from the sea. But they failed to stop a nearby dinghy from picking up the migrants and it left for British shores with mostly men on board. It comes after official figures showed that more than 919 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Friday on 14 dinghies - averaging around 66 people per boat. It has taken the provisional annual total to 16,183, which is 42 per cent higher than the same point last year and 79 per cent up on the same date in 2023. The highest daily number so far this year was 1,195 on May 31.

Hate cleric Anjem Choudary FAILS in first bid to have terror conviction and 28-year jail term quashed

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HATEMONGER Anjem Choudary has failed in his first attempt to have his terror conviction and 28-year jail term quashed. But the extremist preacher, 58, is continuing his taxpayer-funded fight by battling on for a full court hearing. He now has one last chance to have his appeal considered. But the decision not to end the process has shocked some experts. Prof Anthony Glees, from the University of Buckingham, said: 'Choudary clearly remains a highly dangerous terrorist and radicaliser who is now trying to make a monkey of English justice with his latest appeal. 'What the British public see here looks like an unending desire to pander to him, every time he raises a complaint. "This has got to stop. 'Our courts need to say to tell him 'we're done'. "Choudary has exploited Islamist separation units, most recently to mentor vile Abedi, they are clearly no longer fit for purpose.' The Sun revealed in April how the hate cleric used £367,000 in legal aid before his conviction for running a terror group from his London home.

Brits face 15 years in hellhole prison abroad over festival drug dealing charges

Jordan Benoit, 34, and James Calder, 33, were arrested and charged with possession and supply after allegedly peddling MDMA, ketamine and ecstasy in Dhermi, Albania Two British men could each face up to 15 years in a hellhole Albanian prison after they were charged with drug dealing. Jordan Benoit, 34, and James Calder, 33, were allegedly peddling MDMA, ketamine and ecstasy at the Kala music festival in the idyllic seaside resort of Dhermi. Video footage shows cops searching a Mitsubishi vehicle owned by the pair in an operation codenamed Cocktail. They also raided a property the duo were renting in the village and allegedly found 52 doses of MDMA, 51 of ketamine, 120 ecstasy pills and €6,185 (£5,264) and £720 in cash, plus four mobiles. Benoit and Calder, from London, were arrested and charged with possession and supply. A judge remanded them in custody at a hearing last week. The penalty in Albania for supplying drugs is up to 15 years in prison, according to the UK government. Around 4,000 Brits attend the annual dance music festival, this year headlined by London jazz group the Ezra Collective from June 4 to 11. The Albanian authorities say the beautiful coastal region is becoming awash with drugs over the summer. Police chief Elidon Cela said their fight against narcotics 'intensifies during the tourist season'. Speaking to The Mirror he said: 'In addition to local criminal elements, foreign tourist flows are bringing criminal elements who bring synthetic narcotics into our country with the intent of distributing them to tourists.' The charges come amid a glut of Brits thrown in foreign prisons on drug charges in recent weeks. In Thailand alone, more than 50 have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle cannabis in the last 12 months. And three are facing the death penalty in Bali accused of trafficking. Last month Bella Culley, 18, from Teesside, allegedly tried to smuggle a suitcase of weed into Georgia. Ex-air stewardess Charlotte May Lee, 21, from South London, has been sharing a prison cell with five other women after she was allegedly caught with 46kg of the drug in her cases in Sri Lanka. And 21-year-old mum Cameron Bradford, from Knebworth, Herts, was detained at Munich Airport on suspicion of travelling with cannabis from Thailand.
