'Really bad': Manly go public with new injury issue suffered by Tom Trbojevic

Yahoo23-05-2025

Manly coach Anthony Seibold has revealed Tom Trbojevic has been hampered by a "really bad" cork to his quad in recent weeks, which explains why he hasn't looked 100 per cent fit. NSW coach Laurie Daley overlooked Trbojevic when he named his team for State of Origin 1 on Sunday night, and stated it was simply a case of the superstar fullback not being fit enough.
Many felt Trbojevic would find a spot in the Blues' backline somewhere, but Daley went with Dylan Edwards, Brian To'o, Stephen Crichton, Latrell Mitchell and Zac Lomax instead. Trbojevic hasn't played an Origin game since 2023, and even then he tore his pec and the Blues had to use Damien Cook in the centres.
Daley felt it was too big a risk to carry an underdone Trbojevic in his 17 for Origin 1, considering there was no guarantee he'd last the 80 minutes. The Manly fullback has looked well off the pace in recent weeks, and already missed games this year due to hamstring and knee injuries.
He missed Round 3 due to the hamstring issue, and then limped off in Round 4 with an MCL sprain. After sitting out three weeks he made his return in Round 8 against the Panthers, but hasn't looked anywhere near his best.
Speaking on Thursday, Sea Eagles coach Seibold rejected Daley's suggestion Trbojevic isn't fully-fit. However he did reveal he suffered a painful quad cork in the Round 8 game that has been affecting him.
"Obviously Turbo had the MCL injury earlier in the year, and then his first game back against Penrith a couple of weeks ago he had a really bad cork to his quad," Seibold said. "That hampered him over our bye week, and against the Sharks (in Round 10).
"I felt like he moved a lot better on the weekend against the Cowboys, particularly in defence, some of the stuff he did was outstanding. He's looking fantastic at training this week as well... we expect Turbo to be at his best on Friday."

Seibold said Trbojevic is still good enough for Origin footy, but admitted it's a silver lining that he's available for Manly this weekend. "Everyone knows Turbo is one of the elite players in the game, and every time he's represented his state or his country he's been a fantastic performer," Seibold said.
"It's not for me to weigh into selection, but from our perspective it's great to have Turbo as our skipper on Friday night. I don't think the Origin door is ever shut for Turbo. He belongs in that arena, I think everyone knows that. If there's an opportunity that presents I know Turbo will take that with both hands."
Earlier this week, Manly teammate Reuben Garrick predicted Turbo would make a big statement against Parramatta after being snubbed for NSW selection. 'Tom's a very competitive person and I'm sure that it'll only bring fuel to the fire,' Garrick said.
'Tom would be in my (NSW) side but I'm not the one picking it. Fingers crossed he puts some good games together and he's back in that arena. It's Tom Trbojevic, at the end of the day. He's a gun.'

Fresh blow for Panthers as another member of four-straight premiership team set to depart

The Penrith Panthers' four-peat has seen them have to part ways with some massive names like Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton, Api Koroisau and Matt Burton. And another important member of their NRL juggernaut is set to step down next year, with CEO Brian Fletcher informing the club of his decision to retire on Saturday. Fletcher has been CEO and director of the Panthers for the last 15 years, but the 71-year-old has made the difficult decision to step away. Fletcher will quit the role at the start of 2026, leaving the Panthers with a big decision to make as to who replaces him. 'On behalf of the Panthers Group board, I want to sincerely thank Brian for his tireless service to the Panthers,' the club's Chairman Peter Graham said in a statement. 'Brian's leadership over the past 10 years has helped build a successful organisation. We are grateful for everything he has done to position the club for long-term strength.' The Panthers said in a statement: "Fletcher has played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation and has been instrumental in leading the club through one of the most successful eras in its proud history. His contribution across all facets of the Panthers Group – including the rugby league program, leagues club broader community engagement – has been tremendous. The club will now begin a formal search process to appoint a new Panthers Group CEO who can lead the organisation into its next chapter." Fletcher has been pivotal in helping build the Panthers into the most successful NRL club of the modern era. He was at the heart of the club's decision to build their high-performance academy in 2016, which has produced a number of premiership-winning players. He also helped convince Peter V'landys to join the Australian Rugby League Commission through their horse racing connections, and is widely regarded as one of the best administrators in Australian sport. 'Our focus from a football department point of view has always been about building good young men and champion footballers – and that success would then follow,' Fletcher told the . 'I've enjoyed being a small part in the four successful premierships. There have been a lot of great people in that success.' RELATED: Reece Walsh in State of Origin twist as Slater makes call on DCE 'Shouldn't be involved': Wayne Bennett hit with ban by NRL The 71-year-old is at peace with his decision to walk away. 'You often see people in jobs like mine where you're getting well paid that can stay around too long. I think it's a perfect time to retire. All the clubs are trading well. We've finished building the Pullman Hotel and the 1000-seat convention centre. We have some very talented young people in the organisation. They deserve a crack at it now.' Fletcher joins a long line of figures to leave the Panthers in recent years. The likes of Luai, Crichton, Koroisau, Burton, Viliame Kikau and Sunia Turuva have all been forced to leave the club due to salary constraints, seeking greener pastures and more money at rival clubs. And they've also lost premiership-winning assistant coaches. Cameron Ciraldo has gone on to become the Bulldogs' head-coach, and Andrew Webster has done likewise with the Warriors. Current assistant coach Ben Gardiner has also been linked to joining St Helens in the UK Super League.

Aussie coach steers Hull KR to Challenge Cup joy

Australian coach Willie Peters has seen his Hull KR team end 40 years of hurt in a dramatic finish to the English Challenge Cup final as they beat Warrington Wolves 8-6 at a rain-lashed Wembley Stadium. Mikey Lewis held his nerve to kick the winning conversion after Tom Davies had flopped onto Australian playmaker Tyrone May's kick to haul the Robins level against Warrington with just minutes to spare. Lewis then stepped up to boot his side into the history books, completing a win that erased the memory of their last-gasp agony against Leigh in 2023. Largely out-muscled by a Wire side orchestrated by the imperious Marc Sneyd, Rovers looked set for more Wembley agony as the underdogs entered the final three minutes with a four-point advantage. But after Tom Davies stretched to touch down following an error from Aaron Lindop, it was left to Lewis - handed kicking duties in the absence of the Cup-tied Arthur Mourgue, to nail the two-pointer that sparked raucous celebrations among the red and white hordes behind the post. The Boss ❤️#UpTheRobins🔴⚪️ — Hull KR (@hullkrofficial) June 7, 2025 "That was probably the moment when I was the most calm," insisted Sydneysider Peters, who celebrated wildly with his players - many of whom had been part of their agonising 2023 golden-point defeat to Leigh - at the final hooter less than one and a half minutes after his side had nudged back ahead. "It was a massive moment and I believed he was going to get it because of the belief he has in himself. He's not our number one kicker but I felt really comfortable and confident when he had the ball in his hands because that was his moment." Lewis' early penalty looked set to give Rover a slender halftime advantage before Josh Thewlis took advantage of a ricochet to give his side the lead. Sneyd, who added a superb two points from the touchline in the second half and won the Lance Todd Trophy for man of the match, continued to dominate after the break until May's clever kick led to the late, late drama. "It wasn't the best performance but it was gritty and that's all you need in a Cup final," added Peters. "You need to have grit and you need to enjoy discomfort, and they certainly did that." Deflated Warrington coach and former South Sydney NRL star Sam Burgess said he could not have asked any more from his side, who were on the verge of securing their first Wembley triumph since 2019. Burgess, whose side were also beaten by Wigan in last year's final, said: "You don't always get what you deserve and I don't think we deserved to lose today. "We controlled the game very well and executed the plan. Unfortunately these things can happen, we were just on the wrong side of things today." Burgess also revealed that Australian winger Matt Dufty suffered a facial fracture which will now see him miss a chunk of the Super League season. "Matt Dufty broke his cheek or eye socket with about 25 minutes to go and was trying to get to the end of the game, but it just popped out," said Burgess. "We'll be without Duft for a little while but it was outstanding to try to play through the pain. It's just unfortunate we didn't get the job done for him."

Reece Walsh in State of Origin twist as Slater makes decision on Daly Cherry-Evans

Billy Slater is reportedly leaning towards axing Daly Cherry-Evans as Queensland halfback and captain for State of Origin 2, while Reece Walsh made a stunning late push to unseat Kalyn Ponga as fullback. However there were bizarre scenes involving Walsh when the fullback appeared to re-injure his knee in the Broncos' 44-14 win over the Titans on Saturday night. Walsh returned after a six-week absence for the clash at Suncorp Stadium, despite whispers he wasn't quite ready. And the gamble appeared to backfire on coach Michael Maguire when Walsh went down in agony with 10 minutes remaining. The fullback caught a high ball near his line, before pivoting on his troublesome knee and hitting the deck with no-one around him. Walsh grimaced in pain and was hobbling around, but pushed the trainer away who was trying to help him. It looked for sure as though Walsh had re-injured his right knee, ruining any faint hope he had of a State of Origin recall. But he pushed through the pain, and bizarrely scored two tries in the next five minutes. First he burned Chris Randall with a scintillating solo try from a scrum, stepping off his left leg and charging over. He then backed up on the inside after a break from Kotoni Staggs and managed to sprint to the line for the Broncos' eighth try. He didn't appear to be running at full speed, and it remains to be seen whether he's done more damage to his right knee. Another stint on the sidelines would be a hammer blow for the Broncos, and questions will be asked if he made his return too early. Eyebrows were also raised that he was allowed to stay on the field after appearing to aggravate his knee, given the Broncos had already sealed the victory. It was the same situation when he played out the match after suffering the injury the first time in Round 7. His two-try performance would have given Slater plenty to ponder given Ponga hasn't been in the greatest of form. Ponga has probably done enough to retain his spot, and the sight of Walsh hobbling around would have worried Slater no doubt. Walsh no need to be brave. If your struggling or the knee isn't right than get off the field #nrlBroncosTitans — gemma rogers (@gemma92rogers) June 7, 2025 How is Walsh running on that terribly injured knee?#dramaqueen — MickyG (@micklegend) June 7, 2025 8 mins to go, up 32-8, Walsh injures the same knee he previously injured .. & wants to stay on the field 🤦🏼‍♂️ if I'm coach I'm on the field & drag the muppet off the field, it's a long season 🤷‍♂️@brisbanebroncos #NRLBroncosTitans — MushroomFunGuy🍄 (@Bemboka23) June 7, 2025 As for Cherry-Evans, reports have emerged that Slater is on the cusp of axing his captain for Game 2. The veteran halfback was poor in the second half against Newcastle on Thursday night, while Tom Dearden has been in much better form. is reporting that Slater is leaning towards picking Dearden at halfback to partner Cameron Munster in Origin 2, and leaving Cherry-Evans out of his 17 altogether. The team will be announced officially on Monday evening, but it appears as though DCE's Origin career is over. RELATED: 'Shouldn't be involved': Wayne Bennett hit with ban by NRL Mary Fowler dream could be ruined amid Nathan Cleary news If he's left out of the 17 it will see Kurt Mann win a spot on the bench, and he might even start at hooker given Slater's preference to have Harry Grant come off the interchange. The Maroons are 0-4 in games that Grant has started, and he's been much more effective when he's kept out of the rough and tumble of the first 10 minutes.
