Demolition work set to begin in £10m Eston Precinct revamp
Demolition work is to begin in the next phase of a £10m shopping and leisure precinct.A demolition notice has been issued to transform Eston Precinct, near Redcar, from 5 May, with work expected to be finished by spring 2026.Redcar and Cleveland Council said most of the shops earmarked to come down have been vacated, with the rest expected to be empty by the end of March. Eston ward councillor David Taylor said there was a "list" of interested retailers in the project, although none had formally been signed up yet by the local authority.
The £9.9m scheme is being paid for with government levelling up funds and a contribution from the Tees Valley Combined Authority.The planned precinct will have seven or eight new units, along with 100 car parking spaces, the Local Democracy Reporting News Service said. Taylor said there were a few businesses "waiting to find suitable alternative premises" before the demolition, which is being undertaken by the company Esh.
'Long time coming'
A cabinet report in 2023 said the ambition was to "transform" Eston and prevent the "continued decline of a deprived and neglected area" by attracting new retailers, shoppers and leisure users. He has previously said the regeneration scheme had been a "long time coming".A previous £6m retail scheme for the square and precinct area was shelved in 2021 with some remaining retailers complaining they had been left in limbo.

Princess Beatrice-backed start-up community OPUS lands $2m funding boost
A for-profit social enterprise which counts HRH Princess Beatrice among its directors will this week announce a funding boost and the appointment of one of Silicon Valley's most prominent figures to its board. Sky News has learnt that OPUS, a membership community which aims to cultivate a new wave of British entrepreneurs, is to unveil a $2m injection of capital from a syndicate of angel investors and family offices. It will also announce that Marc Porat, co-founder of General Magic - the company credited with inventing the early technologies behind the smartphone - is to become a director of the company. OPUS has drawn a membership of nearly 1,000 technology company founders since it was established with the aim of helping their projects during the embryonic stages of building their businesses. "Anything anyone has ever achieved has been due to the support and actions of others," Sam Tidswell-Norrish, chair of OPUS, said in a statement. "That's what OPUS is built on - the power of the collective. "This raise is a signal of intent: that OPUS and its investors are deeply committed to backing the founders of tomorrow." The company has a physical presence in central London, and is establishing a dual-base in South Africa. Its new funding will be deployed to help founders through the use of artificial intelligence in areas such as fundraising, recruitment, product development and operations. Among OPUS's other backers are Miguel McKelvey, the WeWork co-founder, and Imtiaz Patel, former boss of MultiChoice Group. "OPUS's mission deeply resonates with my own journey," said Mr Porat "The early stages of building are always the most challenging - even for the most talented, experienced and well[1]connected founder. Cleethorpes police station homes plan recommended for refusal
Plans to partly demolish a former police station to make way for new homes have been recommended for Prince's Road site in Cleethorpes was sold off after Humberside Police moved out in 2020 after almost 90 have proposed 21 homes, made up of ten flats and 11 at North East Lincolnshire Council cited flood risk concerns as the reason for the recommendation. The proposals have met with concerns from both Anglian Water and the Environment Agency over surface water run-off and some of the floors being below anticipated flood levels, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, However, documents submitted on behalf of the applicant, Paul Bannister of Land Developers (Lincs) Ltd, said this could be reduced by the introduction of measures such as a green space to absorb some surface approved, the oldest elements of the police station and its frontage would remain. A modern two-storey office building and parts that were kennels and garaging would be council's planning committee will decide on the application on Wednesday.
