Cacace stops Wood in brutal ninth round to retain title

Yahoo11-05-2025

Belfast's Anthony Cacace retained his IBO super-featherweight title with a ninth-round stoppage of Leigh Wood at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena on Saturday.
It was a gripping battle between the two 36-year-olds, which appeared on a knife-edge until Cacace made the big breakthrough and he was in no mood to let the home favourite off the hook.
Wood is noted for his powers of recovery, highlighted by his remarkable come-from-behind victory over Michael Conlan three years ago in the same venue.
But this time it was beyond him with Cacace ruthlessly closing the show as Wood's corner threw in the towel just as it seemed referee John Latham was about to wave it off.
After the victory, the Northern Irishman's record now stands at 24 wins and one defeat from 25 fights.
Wood began confidently off the jab as he sought to assert himself, but was snapped back on a couple of occasions from Cacace's right hands and again towards the end of the opener as there was a sense both men could land something decisive.
Neither could afford to get reckless as there was clear respect between the pair, but Wood walked into a right hand in the second round which made him think twice.
But he did get his best shot off in the dying seconds as he found a home for his own right hand which brought a respectful nod from Cacace.
They landed simultaneously in the third before Cacace appeared to make the first bit of a dent as he got through with one of his trademark uppercuts. After briefly switching to southpaw, he thumped home a left hand which seemed to drive Wood back, but was caught late in the round when missing the target and punished by a counter.
There was an air of tension as the fight proceeded, although Wood enjoyed a good fourth round as he found his range.
It remained on a knife-edge in the fifth with Cacace's stiff jab rocking Wood's head back, but the Nottingham man responded well to have his own success.
Cacace grabbed some momentum with a good sixth round as he got through with another uppercut and seemed to be opening up by putting punches together, but was caught in the seventh when switching stances.
Early in the eighth, Cacace suffered a setback with blood beginning to pour from his nose, but Wood was made to eat a solid left up close as they began to trade blows late on.
The Englishman sought a fast start to the ninth round but it proved his undoing.
Perhaps getting a little too excited, he left himself exposed and Cacace pounced and a strong right hand appeared to have a delayed impact as Wood stumbled backwards and, with the ropes keeping him up, referee Latham gave a count.
Cacace didn't let him off the hook as he meticulously broke Wood's resistance, thudding home some punishing shots and the towel came in from his corner to save him from an inevitable KO.
Earlier, Lisburn's Kurt Walker tasted defeat for the first time as he was outpointed by Liam Davies in their battle for the vacant IBF International featherweight title.
The scorecards read 117-111, 115-113 and 116-112 in favour of Englishman Davies on his return to action after his own maiden defeat on points by Shabaz Masoud last November at super-bantamweight.
This time, the 29-year-old managed to get the job done in a close contest, despite a good final push from Walker.

Vasiliy Lomachenko announces retirement from boxing

Vasiliy Lomachenko has announced his retirement from boxing at the age of 37, walking away as a three-weight world champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist (2008 and 2012). His last fight came a year ago, in May 2024 when he stopped Australia's George Kambosos Jr in the 11th round, taking him to a professional record of 18-3 — Orlando Salido, Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney subjecting him to defeats. Advertisement In an Instagram video posted on Thursday afternoon, the Ukrainian said: 'I'm grateful for every victory and defeat inside the ring and outside the ring. I'm thankful that as my career comes to an end, I've gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory, not just in the ring.' Lomachenko will be remembered as one of the sport's greatest fighters, amassing an incredible amateur record of 396-1 before entering the professional ranks and winning the WBO world featherweight title in just his third fight when he beat Gary Russell Jr. via majority decision in June 2014. Two years later, he added the WBO junior lightweight title with victory over Roman Martinez and in 2018, he stopped tough Venezuelan Jorge Linares to secure The Ring and WBA lightweight belts. Renowned for his exquisite footwork, which combined with his lightning-quick hands often left opponents facing shots from angles they did not know existed, Lomachenko was also notoriously hard to hit, earning him nicknames including The Matrix and Hi-Tech. Between November 2016 and December 2017, he went on a run of making four consecutive opponents — Nicholas Walters, Jason Sosa, Miguel Marriaga and Guillermo Rigondeaux — quit, either by their own volition or their corner throwing in the towel. And this in a sport where it feels like 'quitting' is sometimes treated with more disdain than doping. In his farewell Instagram post, Lomachenko thanked his parents, and particularly his father Anatoly, whose face he has tattooed across his torso. It was Anatoly, a boxing coach, who trained his young son in the art of pugilism from the age of four. At nine, 'Papachenko' decided his young son should swap his boxing boots for dancing shoes and for the next four years, Lomachenko perfected the art of traditional Ukrainian dancing. His exceptional balance and fast feet are often attributed to this period and while Lomachenko has agreed that dancing was part of that, he also attributes his skills to doing many other sports (gymnastics, basketball, football and tennis included), too. The pair developed training methods designed to forge Lomachenko's mental strength and sharpness, including training him to hold his breath for long periods underwater (his record is four minutes 20 seconds) and challenging him with complex mental arithmetic problems. Inside the ring, those mental and physical skills elevated him to a level far above many of his peers and one that few will ever be able to replicate in the same glorious, captivating manner as Lomachenko did throughout his career.

Trai Hume wants Northern Ireland's young guns to set standard for squad

Trai Hume expects Northern Ireland to feed off the success that has been enjoyed by several of their young stars over the past few weeks. Hume and his Sunderland team-mate Daniel Ballard have been celebrating earning promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic play-off campaign that ended with victory over Sheffield United at Wembley. Advertisement And that came at the end of a month in which Conor Bradley received his first Premier League winner's medal with Liverpool and fellow 21-year-old Justin Devenny lifted the FA Cup with Crystal Palace. Ballard, 25, and Hume, 23, will double the Premier League contingent in Michael O'Neill's squad, something that Hume believes can only help as they look ahead to their World Cup qualifying campaign that starts in September. 'I don't think there's any doubt,' Hume said. 'You're exposing yourself to the best league in the world, so you want to try your best to do well there and if you can, you're going to become a better player because of it. Advertisement 'Obviously me and Dan are still young, Conor and Justin are still young, so hopefully we can have a lot of years in the Premier League and that will only benefit Northern Ireland going forward. 'I have no doubt there's other players in the squad that will get themselves into the Premier League as well. Obviously it's us four at the minute and hopefully we can try and push the lads and bring them up to the standard that we're going to set.' Northern Ireland are preparing for Saturday's friendly away to Denmark and Tuesday's match at home against Iceland, but their eyes are already on September when they begin their World Cup qualifying campaign with an away double-header against Luxembourg and Germany, with Slovakia also in Group A. Playing in high-pressure games like the Championship play-off final is valuable experience ahead of facing the likes of Germany, and Hume said: 'I think it will help us deal with the atmosphere a bit better. Obviously, the calibre of players will be a lot different. I think we will try our best to deal with that. 'I think the big games you do play in, you get used to the emotion of it and the challenge of playing in front of the crowd and not getting caught up in the emotion of the game. Advertisement 'Germany is definitely going to be a lot different than Sheffield United. Like I say, we will just have to try our best to be ready and be focused for it.' Germany are obvious favourites to top the group, with Northern Ireland vying to beat Slovakia and Luxembourg to second place and the play-off spot that would bring. Ballard said they would treat their games against those two nations as cup finals. 'I think we can make a really positive start to the group,' he said. 'I think the games against Luxembourg and Slovakia are going to be really important for us. I think they will all be like cup finals. 'I feel like we have a real opportunity this year to go and put ourselves in a strong spot to qualify.'

FC Barcelona And Poland's Ewa Pajor Leads World's Goalscorers In 2025

BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND - MAY 30: Ewa Pajor of Poland celebrates scoring her team's first goal ... (Photo by) After a record-breaking season at FC Barcelona, Poland's Ewa Pajor is the leading female goalscorer in the world during the calendar year of 2025 going into June. According to The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), the 28-year-old has scored 29 goals in all competitions so far this year. This puts her two goals ahead of last year's winner of the award, Charlyn Corral of Pachuca, who has scored 26 goals during the first five months of 2025. Pajor's 29 goals also put her level with the leading male goalscorer in the world so far this year, Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid. This means, going into June, no player on the planet has scored more times than Pajor. Pajor joined Barcelona from VfL Wolfsburg last June on a three-year contract. During her first season in Spain, she scored a total of 43 goals in all competitions, outscoring her much-vaunted Polish compatriot in the men's side, Robert Lewandowski, who scored 42 times. Her season total for Barcelona is 15 more than she has scored in any previous season during her career. The 43 goals, scored in just 46 matches, is also just short of the record for the FC Barcelona women's team, four fewer than the 47 scored in 40 games by former striker Jenni Hermoso scored during the 2016/17 season. However, despite winning the league title in Spain, the one domestic club trophy missing from Pajor's collection continues to elude her. The Polish striker lost four Champions League finals in her time at Wolfsburg, the last of them against Barcelona in 2023. One of her main motivations in joining the three-time winners was to become a European champion herself saying "the Champions League is something special, something I want to win but it's not my obsession." (Photo by Daniela Porcelli/Sports) Pajor scored seven goals in ten games to help Barcelona reach a fifth successive Champions League final. Yet, once again, she finished as a runner-up, losing 1-0 to Arsenal in Lisbon, the fifth time she was suffered defeat in the Champions League final. Nevertheless, Pajor could help Barcelona complete a domestic treble this weekend by winning the Copa de la Reina final against Atlético de Madrid. It would be 10th season in a row in which Pajor has won a domestic cup competition. Next month, her country's all-time leading goalscorer, Pajor will lead Poland into their first-ever senior international tournament in the UEFA Women's Euro. Corral was the leading female goalscorer in the world at the end of 2024 with 44 goals in all competitions and has already scored at a higher rate in 2025. With 21 goals in the regular season, her five strikes in the Clausura play-offs helped Pachuca win their first league title last month. This has proved crucial as Pajor has 25 goals for Barcelona and has moved ahead of Corral due to the four she has scored for the Polish national team, including two against Northern Ireland in Belfast last week. Elsewhere on the list, Kateřina Svitková of Slavia Praha sits in third place with 25 goals in all competitions. 24-year-old Jaimy Ravensbergen of FC Twente has scored 24, all for her club side. She is four ahead of England's Katie Wilkinson in fifth position with 20 goals playing in Scotland for Glasgow Rangers. Pajor is remarkably one of five FC Barcelona players to feature on the top thirty of the list of leading female goalscorers in 2025. She is ahead of Claudia Pina (15) who added another two in Spain's win over England this week, Salma Paralleulo (14), Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas (both on 12 goals).
