PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh relief for MP road accident victim families
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the Madhya Pradesh road accident victim families and Rs 50, 000 for the injured.
'An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,' PMO India wrote on X.
The Prime Minister also expressed grief over the accident. 'Saddened by the loss of lives in an accident in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,' said PM Modi.
At least 11 people were killed in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district after a van carrying devotees plunged into an open well on Sunday near Budha-Takarwat crossing by Kachariya Chowpati village under the Narayangarh police station.
Four others, including two young children, sustained severe injuries in the incident.
Police said that the vehicle lost control after hitting a bike, ultimately tumbling into a 15-foot-deep well.
Manohar Singh, an area resident who attempted to rescue the occupants, tragically succumbed to toxic gas emissions from the LPG-powered van, said the police.
Anil Raghuvanshi, Narayangarh police station in-charge, told IANS: 'So far, 11 persons have been confirmed dead in the accident, including rescuer Manohar Singh and biker Gobar Singh, who was struck by the moving van. Search is still going on.'
Manohar Singh was a resident of Sanjit village, while Gobar Singh was a resident of Sitamau in the district.
Police sources said, reliance on earthmoving machinery and cranes, following the rescuer's death, left many passengers suffocated inside the van.
Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, who arrived at the accident site, posted on his X account: 'On receiving information about the heart-breaking incident of a four-wheeler falling into a well in village Kachariya Chowpati of Malhargarh assembly constituency of Mandsaur district, I immediately visited the spot and inspected it and directed the District Collector and Superintendent of Police to expedite the rescue operation.'

Agra: The local administration in Mathura has started a land survey for the proposed Banke Bihari corridor on Monday, after the Supreme Court's approval. The move comes amid ongoing protests by local residents, including the Goswami community, whose members are considered the temple's 'sevayats' -- hereditary priests who manage daily rituals and other temple affairs. The land survey was conducted by a four-member team who inspected the area around the temple complex. Sources within the local administration told TOI that to ensure minimal inconvenience for local residents, an active search is underway for possible resettlement spots within Vrindavan. On May 15, the SC bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma permitted the state govt to proceed with a 'Rs 500 crore redevelopment plan', which entails acquiring almost five acres of land, using temple funds. The SC ruling came amid protests from the Goswami community and local residents, who have opposed both the corridor project and establishment of the Banke Bihari Temple Trust. Gyanendra Kishor Goswami, a member of the temple management, said, "The proposed corridor and Banke Bihari Trust would destroy the temple's original and ancient form. Govt has adopted a dictatorial attitude towards our demands. Our protest will continue." The move to redevelop the place came up after a stampede-like incident on Janmashtami in 2022, that claimed two lives. In Sept 2023, Allahabad HC instructed the state govt to implement a corridor plan for improved crowd management and safety. Officials claimed that all the stakeholders were consulted, but 'sevayats' and local residents alleged they were excluded from the planning process. QRSAM Air Defence System To Bolster India's Frontline, Nod Expected Soon: Report
Last Updated: The Indian Army may soon acquire a new indigenous QRSAM system, costing Rs 30,000 crore, for deployment along western and northern borders The Indian Army may soon get a new indigenous surface-to-air missile system. The development comes at a time when Indian air defence systems are making headlines for successfully bringing down missile and drone attacks launched by Pakistan in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. The proposal, which would cost Rs 30,000 crore, is scheduled to be taken by the Ministry of Defence for buying three regiments of the home-grown Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile system (QRSAM) for deployment along both western and northern borders, news agency ANI reported. The meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is planned to be held around the fourth week of June. The QRSAM, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is configured on highly mobile platforms and is capable of providing air defence on the move. QRSAM Features The Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) is a short-range air defence system developed to safeguard moving armoured columns from aerial threats. With an operational range of approximately 30 km, it complements existing systems like the Akash and MRSAM in the short-to-medium range category. QRSAM is equipped with capabilities for surveillance and tracking while on the move and can engage targets during brief halts. It features an active phased array surveillance radar with a detection range of up to 120 km and a tracking radar effective up to 80 km, integrated with Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) technology. The system is designed for multi-target engagement and can counter threats from aircraft, hovering helicopters, UAVs, and other airborne targets. Indian forces had not deployed air defence systems and missiles in active operations since the Kargil War. However, this changed following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, when India launched BrahMos missiles to strike terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Teacher detained for trying to bribe Education Minister with Rs 5,000
The Rajasthan Police have detained a government teacher for allegedly trying to bribe the cabinet minister for School Education, Madan Dilawar, at his Jaipur residence on Monday. The incident happened when the minister was holding a public hearing at his official residence in Civil Lines area. As per the minister, the teacher Chandrakant Vaishnav arrived with a letter, a box of sweets, and an envelope. The minister said that he didn't suspect anything upon seeing the envelope as these are usual with the letters, 'thinking it might have someone's recommendation. But then my photographer Bharat told me that apparently the envelope has money. Once we opened, it had Rs 5,000.' Vaishnav, posted as a Level 2 science teacher in Banswara's Ghatol, was seeking a recommendation for appointment as a writer in the textbook committee for science for Classes 6-8, which comes under the Rajasthan State Council of Educational Research and Training (RSCERT). To influence the minister, who has an RSS background, Vaishnav stated in his letter that he had been associated with RSS's student organisation, the 'Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and Sangh ideology since his student days.' He said that currently, while holding the post of a teacher, he is also associated 'with organisations like the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, which are associated with the ideology of the Sangh.' Indicating his willingness to rewrite textbooks as per the ideology, Vaishnav said that the new textbooks will be drafted 'as per the intention of the present government' and sought a recommendation from the minister for his inclusion in the committee. Dilawar said that this was the first such instance of his life which is also the 'worst.' 'This is the first such instance in my life; I have been in politics for 35-36 years and am a third time minister. It is quite painful that someone could think that the Education Minister can take a bribe and act on their request,' Dilawar said, adding that this was also the first time he saw this person. Taking a dig at the Congress, Dilawar said, 'I would not like to comment on the past or future. There could have been a tradition (to bribe the minister). Hence, he dared to do this.' Vaishnav, now suspended, is now being questioned by the Jaipur Police.
