PETALING JAYA : The bus involved in this morning's accident that killed 15 university students was recently serviced and the driver has a good track record, says the firm that operated the bus.
Kenari Utara Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd said the bus, which was serviced last month, had no issues and was always sent in for service on schedule.
Kenari Utara operations officer Nazri Nawi said the driver, who was loaned by another company, was known to be a responsible driver well-versed with the Gerik-Jeli route, Berita Harian reported.
'What has happened is very sad. I'm not saddened by the damage sustained by the bus, but the deaths and injuries to the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on board,' he said.
The accident took place on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding. It is understood that the bus was on the way from Jerteh, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak.
A total of 48 victims were involved: 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant, and a married couple along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, who were in a Perodua Alza the bus collided with.
Thirteen UPSI students died at the scene and two at the hospital.
Police are forming a special task force, joined by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, road transport department, Land Public Transport Agency and other relevant agencies to investigate the crash.

Gerik crash: Police record statements from 18 witness
IPOH: Police have recorded statements from 18 individuals as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic bus crash at Km53 of the East-West Highway, which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on Monday. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said statements had been obtained from 13 surviving students who have since been discharged from hospital, as well as the driver of the Perodua Alza involved in the collision. "Other witnesses include the driver's wife, who is currently receiving treatment at Baling Hospital, a dashcam witness whose video has gone viral on social media, and a forensic doctor from Gerik Hospital," he said. "However, police have yet to record a statement from the bus driver, who remains hospitalised," he told reporters at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters today. Noor Hisam said that police were waiting for the bus driver to be discharged before recording his statement and submitting a remand application. "No remand application has been filed yet. We are awaiting his discharge and medical clearance," he said. He also confirmed that a blood sample from the bus driver has been sent for analysis, with results pending from the Chemistry Department. "The police are working closely with multiple agencies — including the Chemistry Department, the Public Works Department, the Road Transport Enforcement Agency, and the Bukit Aman Forensic Division — to ensure a thorough investigation," he said. As for the dashcam footage, Noor Hisam said that the video was being analysed to verify its authenticity and relevance to the case. "The footage is not entirely clear and may require expert verification. It has been sent to the Bukit Aman Forensic team for further examination," he added. It was earlier reported that the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway. Thirteen students were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others died later in hospital.

Loh Siew Hong's ex-husband dies amid domestic assault court battle
Loh Siew Hong had been embroiled in a custody battle over her three children with her ex-husband, Muslim convert Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy. PETALING JAYA : Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy, the former husband of Loh Siew Hong, has died. Loh's lawyer Shamsher Singh Thind confirmed that Nagahswaran passed on yesterday. He was 38. The duo became embroiled in a custody battle after Nagahswaran took their three children to Perlis and unilaterally converted them to Islam in 2020. At the time, several court orders had already granted Loh custody, starting with an interim order in December 2019 which progressed to full custody by March 2021. Their divorce was finalised in September 2021. Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy. Loh, who left Nagahswaran in 2019 after complaining of abuse, filed for a habeas corpus order for her children in early 2022. The High Court ruled in her favour, and she was reunited with the children who, at one point, were placed in the care of preacher Nazirah Nanthakumari Abdullah. That same year, Loh filed for judicial review to challenge their conversion. In April 2024, the Federal Court ruled that both parents must consent to a child's conversion, and confirmed that Loh's children remained Hindus. A final appeal by the Perlis government to reinstate the children's status as Muslims was dismissed in April this year. Nagahswaran had a criminal record and was placed under restricted residence in Kelantan for a drug-related offence in November 2020 but was released in November 2022. His conviction came to light during the custody battle with his ex-wife, and was one of the reasons cited by Loh in her bid for the custody of their children. His time in prison coincided with the period when Loh said she was recovering from alleged domestic abuse and hospitalisation, further complicating the high-profile case. Nagahswaran was charged at the Sungai Petani sessions court in July 2023 with causing grievous hurt to Loh at their home in Taman Ria, Sungai Petani, on March 3, 2019. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of RM10,000 and ordered to keep away from Loh and the witnesses pending the trial. The sessions court had scheduled the criminal trial to commence in September this year.
