Official overseeing the National Hurricane Center testified to Congress it's fully staffed—it's not
Hurricanes Storms Federal agenciesFacebookTweetLink Follow The National Hurricane Center is 'fully staffed' and any suggestion that the Trump administration fired meteorologists at the National Weather Service is 'fake news,' 'preposterous and silly,' Commerce Sec. Howard Lutnick testified to Congress this week. But the administration did fire meteorologists, and the nation's top hurricane forecasting office is not fully staffed as the season is underway. The NHC, like many other parts of the NWS, has a staffing shortfall currently, with five vacancies at the center in Miami, including at least four meteorologists. None of the NHC positions can be filled due to the federal hiring freeze, though the NWS was able to get an exemption for 126 mission-critical vacancies at other forecast offices around the country. The critical staffing issues — which have meant some forecast offices are no longer monitoring the weather 24/7 or launching twice-daily weather balloons — have raised concerns that forecast accuracy will suffer during this hurricane season. 'We are fully, fully staffed. There are no openings on the National Hurricane Center, zero. It is fully staffed,' Lutnick said before a Senate appropriations subcommittee during hearings on the Commerce Department budget on Wednesday. Lutnick claimed again on Thursday the NHC is 'fully staffed,' and falsely stated local weather service forecast offices are fully staffed in an appearance before the House Appropriations Committee. 'It is fake news and inappropriate to suggest a single meteorologist or hydrologist was fired,' Lutnick said. 'That is preposterous and silly.' The Trump administration cut about 100 jobs at the NWS, including meteorologists and hydrologists, according to a fact sheet from Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell's office. The NWS lost even more meteorologists, including many with decades of experience, from early retirement and other incentives the Trump administration offered in order to reduce the size of the federal workforce. In total, the agency has lost about 560 employees during the course of the administration, bringing total staffing levels below 4,000, according to the NWS Employees Organization. This is about 18% below 'necessary staffing levels' and 33% below 'normal' staffing levels. Many local NWS offices are so short on meteorologists in the wake of Trump administration firings, buyouts and early retirement incentives that the agency has authorized internal transfers to fill critical gaps, in addition to the 126 new hires. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reiterated Lutnick's claims in a Thursday statement: 'The National Hurricane Center is fully staffed to meet the rigorous demands of the hurricane season,' spokesperson Kim Doster said. 'Future positions that may be advertised at the NHC will provide additional support and a deeper bench for our ongoing around-the-clock operations.' A Commerce Department spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. The hurricane center's staff website shows all but one of its vacancies, which include at least one hurricane specialist, one hurricane forecaster and two meteorologist/programmers. One staff member who took an early retirement offer is still listed on the roster, according to an NWS employee familiar with the matter.

South Florida in for a warm, hazy weekend
The weekend is shaping up to hazy and warm with a low chance of rain. NEXT Weather meteorologist Shane Hinton said Saharan dust continues to linger in South Florida and will also do so over Saturday and Sunday. This will help to keep storm chances on the low end with a 10% inland storm chance Friday and a 20-30% chance for the weekend. Saharan dust will help keep the chance of rain low. NEXT Weather Afternoon highs will be seasonable, in the upper 80s to lower 90s, but temperatures will feel like the mid to upper 90s due to the humidity. For boaters, there are no alerts for the Atlantic waters and the Florida Keys. However, there is a moderate rip current risk for swimmers. By the beginning of next week, the dust will clear. That will allow for the chance of rain to climb beginning mid-week. While there is still uncertainty around just how high the rain chances go, the current forecast calls for a 40-60% chance from Monday through Thursday. Afternoon highs will still remain in the upper 80s.

Rounds of showers and storms across Maryland this weekend
After patchy dense fog across the eastern shore this morning, we're now looking at improving weather conditions. Visibility continues to improve as those areas of fog are lifting. The air will have a warm and muggy feel this morning with temperatures climbing into the lower 80s by lunchtime. Very warm and muggy Friday You'll want to dress for the heat and humidity today. Hazy sunshine will allow temperatures to soar into the middle to upper 80s, but when you factor in the higher humidity levels, the feels like temperatures will reach the lower 90s. The hottest temperatures this afternoon will be located north and west of the Baltimore Beltway where high temperatures will get close to 90°. Temperatures along and near Chesapeake Bay will be cooler with the bay breeze kicking into gear this afternoon. Look for highs in the lower to middle 80s along and near the shoreline. Weekend has a mix of showers, storms, and sunshine While the weekend doesn't look like a washout, we will be dealing with a few rounds of showers and storms. There will be dry windows of time where you can get outside, but other times you'll need to seek cover from passing showers and storms. Saturday morning looks wet across most of Maryland. Widespread showers and even a steadier rain is possible through mid to late morning. This batch of rain will impact most of our area, so any Saturday morning activities that are weather dependent will be dealing with the wet weather. There will be a break in the widespread rain developing late Saturday morning through early afternoon. During this time, clouds may break for pockets of sunshine with temperatures warming into the lower to middle 80s. Another weather disturbance will approach mid to late afternoon allowing for isolated to widely scattered storms to form. These storms will be of the hit or miss variety, so some neighborhoods will get drenched, while others may not see any afternoon rain at all. The best bet is to have an alternative plan in place incase storms impact your area. The best chance for gusty afternoon storms Saturday would be from 2 pm until 10 pm. Late Saturday evening and Saturday night look mainly dry and quiet. Temperatures Saturday night will be sultry in the upper 60s with plenty of humidity. Sunday starts quiet in most neighborhoods, but additional showers and thunderstorms will approach the area midday into the afternoon hours. Some of these storms could be strong to severe with isolated damaging winds. Outside of any strong storms, rainfall rates will be high with storms as they'll be producing drenching downpours along with frequent lightning. Storms exit Sunday night. Highs on Sunday will top out in the upper 70s. Nice Monday then more storms Tuesday Monday's weather is trending drier with a mixture of clouds and sunshine. High temperatures will reach the lower 80s. A strong cold front will approach the area on Tuesday. This will bring a batches of showers and thunderstorms to the area. With the high humidity levels, any storm could drop drenching downpours. Fortunately for those looking for an extended stretch of nice outdoor weather, we have some good news for you. Wednesday we will begin an extended stretch of sunny, dry, and warm weather.
