Manassero, Fox take third-round lead at RBC Canadian Open; Hughes low Canadian
CALEDON – Italy's Matteo Manassero and New Zealand's Ryan Fox both had rounds of 6-under 64 to share the third-round lead at the RBC Canadian Open on Saturday.
They're at 14-under overall, a shot ahead of a Taiwan's Kevin Yu as well as Americans Lee Hodges and Matt McCarty.
Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., fired a 6-under 64 to move 13 spots up the leaderboard into a tie with Americans Jake Knapp and Andrew Putnam for sixth at 12 under.
Second-round leader Cameron Champ of the U.S. struggled, shooting a 1-over 71 to drop back into a seven-way tie for ninth at 11 under.
Hughes was one of eight Canadians who made the cut at the national men's golf championship.

OTTAWA – Canada will be aiming to level their record at 2-2 when it plays Serbia on Sunday to cap off the first week of women's Volleyball Nations League action. Canada slipped to 1-2 with a 3-0 loss to Japan in a best-of-five match played Saturday in front of more than 5,100 spectators at the Arena at TD Place. Canada dropped the match to Japan 24-26, 20-25, 19-25. The unbeaten Japan squad led in attack points (39-33), serving (7-3) and made fewer errors 19-30). 'Japan is really tough to play against, and we were right there with them,' said Canadian setter Brie O'Reilly of Langley, B.C. 'We're just missing those after-20 (points) plays and finishing sets. 'We need to stay aggressive and take confidence that there was a lot of our game that was really great.' O'Reilly said the Canadians need to server more aggressively against Serbia and 'just keep our block defence systems working a bit more cohesively.' Kiera Van Ryk of Surrey, B.C., led the scoring for Canada with 13 points and also set a personal best with a serve clocked at 113 kilometres per hour. Yukiko Wada of Japan led her team with 20 points. Canada opened the VNL schedule with a win over Bulgaria and then lost a Thursday match to Netherlands. CALEDON, Ont. — Mackenzie Hughes has dreamed of this moment. In fact, he's already been in this moment. This time, he has to believe, will be different. Article content For the second straight year, the Dundas, Ont. native heads to Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open with a chance to win his national Open. Article content Article content 'I've dreamt from a young age about doing something like this,' Hughes said after shooting a Saturday 64 to head into the final round at 12-under par, two shots back of the lead. 'I was standard-bearer back at Hamilton in '03 and volunteered at a young age and thought, 'Wow, this is really cool.' Now that I get to actually do it, I tell myself, 'Hey, you've got to lean into this. You've got to embrace it and enjoy it.'' Article content Article content He tried to embrace it last year at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. Whether it was the weight of the moment, the thought of accomplishment, or simply golf, he couldn't get it across the finish line, shooting a gut-wrenching 70 in the final round. Article content 'It was easy to kind of look forward and imagine what it would be like to win tournaments 10 minutes from my house and win the Canadian Open,' he recalled. 'It was difficult not to have that in your mind. I think it affected me.' Article content 'I think the hardest thing is to not want it too much, which is hard to turn off. US coach Mauricio Pochettino says ‘We're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup'
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A third straight loss didn't prevent Mauricio Pochettino from thinking big. 'We need to believe. We need to compete like today and for sure we're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup,' the U.S. coach said after the Americans lost their third straight game, wasting an early lead in a 2-1 defeat to Turkey in a friendly on Saturday. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the CONCACAF Nations League final four in March. Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half. While the U.S. had 60% possession and outshot Turkey 13-11, the Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination at last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year.
