What Makes Lightning In A Bottle A Unique Festival Experience

Forbes4 hours ago

Lightning in a Bottle, one of the biggest, independent music festivals in the States.
(For this year's Lightning in a Bottle, I wanted a fresh perspective on why, more than 20 years in, the festival is so beloved. So, 18-year-old Jameson Segil went and captured the experience. – Steve Baltin)
Lightning in a Bottle is truly a once in a lifetime experience. There are very few places that you can go to and be able to be yourself without being judged. LiB is one of those places and that it was made it so unique. You can go anywhere, and you will be transformed into a world of creativity. Artists making art all around you, everyone wearing unique outfits and the beautiful stage designs made you feel as if you were part of the creativity. Everywhere you went you were exposed to new out of the world art pieces like a giant snail or a midnight banana cart. But what separates LiB from other festivals is the community that it not just attracts but that it creates. Every person there wanted to make friends with each other, no judgement and was happy to help you. You can start dancing with anyone and join them on a journey.
The people weren't the only thing that made LiB so special. The music and experiences did as well. Every morning you can wake up and do a yoga class or learn how to make a new dish. Then later in the afternoon, you can attend a workshop to learn how to navigate different aspects of the world we live in before the music and party started. Then from mid-day to sun rise, the party would start and you could choose whatever vibe you wanted. You could go to the Woogie Stage and experience house music or head to the Stacks and experience techno. My favorites being Kilimanjaro and Raphael at Woogie, Underworld at Thunder and Four Tet, Sammy Virji and John Summit at Lightning. The idea of getting to choose your vibe was beautiful but the people made it ten times better. There were barely any phones and instead people immersed themselves in the music and danced. In a world full of phones, it was a healthy break from it and instead living in the moment. It didn't matter if you knew the artist or not, all you had to do was dance and immerse yourself to enjoy.
If you have the opportunity to go to LiB, you should. It is something that in this day is rare and one of kind. You get to meet new creative people, enjoy amazing music and gain a better appreciation of everything around you. – Jameson Segil

Nicole Scherzinger, a new Tony Award winner, gave a stunning performance that might make you weep

Nicole Scherzinger had a big night at the Tony Awards on Sunday. Scherzinger, a former member of the musical group Pussycat Dolls, won her first-ever Tony Award for her performance as Norma Desmond in the Broadway revival of 'Sunset Blvd.,' which also won an award for best musical revival. An emotional Scherzinger said in her acceptance speech that the award was 'a testament that love always wins.' Earlier in the night, Scherzinger gave a gorgeous performance during the telecast, singing a ballad 'As If We Never Said Goodbye.' Appearing barefoot on a smoke-filled stage in a simple black dress, Scherzinger's powerful performance earned a standing ovation from the audience, which included Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wrote the music for the production. Stage and screen icon Glenn Close, who played the role of main character Norma Desmond in the original 1994 Broadway production, introduced Scherzinger's performance. Close earned a Tony Award in 1995 for her work in the musical, along with several other accolades. She went on to reprise the role in the 2017 revival of the show. Earlier this year, Close was among those to give the production rave reviews, calling the show a 'thrilling experience' on her Instagram. 'Sunset Blvd.' is based on the Oscar-winning 1950 Billy Wilder film 'Sunset Boulevard' and follows a fading screen star who lives in the past when she was queen of the silent film era, languishing in her decrepit Los Angeles mansion located on the titular boulevard. The original stage production opened in London in 1993. 'Sunset Blvd' won three Tonys Sunday. CNN's Dan Heching contributed to this report.

Trump's First Words at Kennedy Center Dinner Were a Diss

President Donald Trump kicked off a Monday dinner for the Kennedy Center board with a dig at their own organization. 'What a group of good friends,' Trump said of Kennedy Center's leadership as he took the podium at the White House event. 'We're gonna bring this place back. It's not so good. I thought it was gonna be beautiful.' The president appeared to be recounting his visit to the legendary arts hub in March, when he lamented that it was in 'tremendous disrepair' and went on a litany of everything he wanted to see changed, from the decor to the seats. The Kennedy Center has been one of many tense battlegrounds in Trump's bid to remake the federal government in his image. In February, he fired the institution's board members to name himself chair and install high-profile MAGA figures such as Laura Ingraham and Richard Grenell. 'The Kennedy Center was in dire shape,' Trump told the new board on Monday. 'It's been neglected very badly, and it needs an infusion of different things, including probably funds. But I think we're going to do very well when we get some money from Congress to fix it, because it's so important.' The president accused Kennedy Center's previous leadership of wasting millions of dollars on 'rampant political propaganda, DEI, and inappropriate shows.' 'Who thinks of these ideas?' he asked, drawing laughter from the crowd. 'It's different. We're bringing our country back so fast.' Trump, a longtime Broadway fan, earlier identified his favorites, including Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, as examples of 'non-woke' shows that he wanted to promote. The Kennedy Center's new lineup, unveiled Monday, includes The Outsiders, Spamalot, Back to the Future, and Moulin Rouge. Chicago and Mrs. Doubtfire, shows that feature characters usually played by a man crossdressing as a woman, will also be coming to the arts institution, despite Trump's earlier comments criticizing the Kennedy Center for having 'featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth.' Trump touted that the Kennedy Center has so far balanced its budget, 'eliminated DEI initiatives in all cases, brought back family-friendly programming that will attract large audiences once again, and launched a plan to renovate the building and reclaim the grandeur as a landmark really a Washington landmark—which it always was.'

Josh Duggar denied legal counsel for post-conviction challenge

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Former reality TV star Josh Duggar's request for a court-appointed attorney to help him challenge his 2021 child sexual abuse material (CSAM) conviction has been denied, according to court documents. Duggar, 37, filed a motion without an attorney in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas on May 27. 'The defendant requests counsel for the limited purpose of reviewing the record, evaluating possible constitutional claims, and, if meritorious grounds exist, preparing and filing a motion,' Duggar wrote in the seven-page filing. In an order filed Thursday, June 5, U.S. Magistrate Judge Christy Comstock said Duggar's motion to appoint counsel lacked sufficient detail and failed to justify the request under federal law. 2nd Milk president allowed to travel for fishing trips, court docs say Under 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, courts have discretion to appoint counsel in certain post-conviction cases, but only if the petition presents a nonfrivolous claim and other factors, such as legal or factual complexity, warrant assistance. The judge found that those standards were not met in Duggar's case. Duggar had previously stated he cannot afford a lawyer on his own due to his incarceration. Former 19 Kids and Counting star Josh Duggar was convicted of child pornography possession in December 2021 and sentenced in May 2022. He received over 12 years in prison, 20 years of supervised release, and a $10,000 fine. His appeals were later rejected by both a federal court in 2023 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 2024.
