WhatsApp announces new features for Status, an AIM away message for the 21st century
WhatsApp Status is getting a bit of a facelift.
Status is WhatsApp's version of an AIM away message (an ancient AOL feature from the early days of the social internet), which basically allows users to say what they're up to while they're not near the app. In a new feature released on Thursday, you can personalize your Status just like you would an Instagram Story.

"WhatsApp Status is your private space to keep the people who matter most to you up to date on what's happening day to day. Whether it's your wedding day and you're using Status to give those who couldn't make a front row seat or you just want to share what made you smile most today, bring even more of your personality to each Status," a press release from WhatsApp reads.
You can turn your away message into a collage, like you would in Instagram Stories, by using the layout tool. You can add music, post stickers, and add the "Add Yours" sticker, all of which you can already do on Instagram Stories.
If it isn't clear at this point, Meta owns both Instagram and WhatsApp, so the similarities aren't shocking. Plus, it's sort of Meta's MO to add in features users may or may not want as a ploy to keep them on the platform longer.
"Whether you're sharing the everyday moments that make up your life or a big occasion, we hope these new features give you even more ways to bring those closest to you along and up to date on what's happening," the press release adds.
The features began rolling out on Thursday and will continue rolling out over the next few months.

Stock indexes closed higher on Monday despite uncertain economic news as Trump's tariffs continue to be fought over in court. After posting their strongest month since 2023 in May, stocks started off June on a strong foot. 'In May, U.S. manufacturing activity slipped further into contraction after expanding only marginally in February,' Susan Spence, chair of the ISM's Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said in a statement. She added that deliveries were delayed because of additional processing time at ports and because 'suppliers and panelists' companies are haggling over who pays for applied tariffs.' Last week, an appeals court permitted the Trump administration's tariffs to stay in place while lawsuits on their legality proceed, potentially going all the way up to the Supreme Court. However, even if the current 'reciprocal' tariffs are ruled illegal, analysts note, the White House has several legal options to pursue its tariff policies. 'Either way, tariff rates are likely to get back over 10% and stay there, one way or another,' researchers at LPL Financial said in a note. 'Trade negotiations will continue, economic growth and deficit concerns will remain, and markets are likely to continue to be volatile around lingering trade policy uncertainty.' WhatsApp looks set to roll out a long-awaited feature
WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to create a username for their account, eliminating the need to show their phone number when connecting with other users. The feature, first reported by WABetaInfo (via Tecnoblog), was spotted in the code of a recent iOS update released via the TestFlight beta Program. WABetaInfo noted that the feature is currently in development and is not yet available for beta testing. Recommended Videos Being able to create a username instead of giving your phone number is both a security measure and a personalization feature, enabling users to express their identity uniquely while at the same time maintaining privacy. According to WABetaInfo's findings, WhatsApp will lay out some rules around how you'll be able to select a username, in a bid to ensure consistency and security. For example, to prevent other users from thinking they're communicating with an official website, you won't be able to create a name that starts with 'www'. Nor will you be able to end a name with a domain like '.com'. For a cleaner look, WhatsApp account names will have to be created in lower case letters, with numbers, periods, and underscores also allowed. Additionally, your WhatsApp username will have to contain at least 3 characters and cannot exceed 30. 'Once a username that meets all the above criteria is chosen by the user, a confirmation screen will appear,' WABetaInfo said in its report. 'This screen includes a celebratory animation with confetti, and it will confirm that the username has been successfully linked to the user's account. From that moment on, people who do not have the user's phone number will see the username instead, both when initiating a new conversation and within group chats.' To reiterate, the feature is under development and is likely to come as part of a future update to WhatsApp, hopefully before too long. The new feature would bring WhatsApp in line with other messaging platforms like Signal and Telegram, which both require phone numbers to register but allow users to connect via a username rather than the account's phone number. WhatsApp hit the headlines again recently with the long-awaited launch of an iPad version of its messaging service. As you'd expect, WhatsApp for iPad offers multi-tasking features such as Split View, Slide Over, and Stage Manager, bringing a more productive, as well as pleasant, user experience.
