Queen's Club Championships: Zheng survives scare to reach last eight
Zheng Qinwen survived a scare to reach the Queen's Club quarterfinals as the Chinese top seed beat McCartney Kessler 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 on Thursday.
Zheng trailed 4-2 in the final set of the last 16 clash against the world number 42.
But the Paris Olympic champion roared back to avoid a shock defeat at the Wimbledon warm-up event in west London.
Zheng beat Donna Vekic on the clay at Roland Garros last year to become the first Asian player to win Olympic gold in a singles event and also reached the Australian Open final in 2024.

The 22-year-old, currently fifth in the WTA rankings, bowed out in the French Open quarterfinals recently and is hoping to make her first strong run at Wimbledon, where she has never been past the third round in three visits.
Success at Queen's would be a significant boost to her Wimbledon aspirations and next up for the Chinese star is a last eight clash with former US Open champion Emma Raducanu.
In the first women's event at Queen's for 52 years, 2022 Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Elena Rybakina made the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Britain's Heather Watson.
Rybakina will play Germany's Tatjana Maria in the last eight on Friday, while Australian Open holder Madison Keys faces Shnaider and Emma Navarro takes on fellow American Amanda Anisimova.

Suruchi Inder Singh stormed into the final of 10m Air Pistol women at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shooting World Cup (rifle/pistol), while Paris Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker missed out to make the cut here on Friday. Suruchi shot a total of 243.6 in the final to beat compatriot Manu, a two-time Olympic medallist who shot 242.3 to grab the silver. This was Suruchi's second successive gold in the women's 10m air pistol event at ISSF World Cups this year. The 19-year-old from Jhajjar in Haryana won the gold medal in Buenos Aires in early April to mark her maiden podium finish at a senior World Cup. Meanwhile, Manu's silver medal in Peru was her first since striking a double bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She had returned empty-handed from Buenos Aires. However, in Munich, another Indian, Sainyam, who was competing for the Ranking Points Only (RPO) shot 580 - 23x. Earlier, double Paris Olympics bronze medallist Manu finished sixth in the women's 25m pistol final. Munich [Germany], June 14 (ANI): Indian shooter Suruchi Singh clinched the gold medal in the women's 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2025, held in Munich, Germany, on Friday. The victory in Munich marked Suruchi's continued dominance in this year's ISSF World Cup series, having already secured top podium finishes in the Buenos Aires and Lima legs, according to The 19-year-old Indian shooter shot a total of 241.9 in the final, edging out France's Camille Jedrzejewski (241.7) in a nail-biting finish. The People's Republic of China's Qianxun Yao took bronze with 221.7. Suruchi, who won seven gold medals in the shooting nationals in New Delhi last year, was second at one stage with a score of 162.3, trailing Qianxun Yao by 0.4 points, said. However, Qianxun Yao dropped out of the top two after three successive shots below 10. According to the Indian was then overtaken by Jedrzejewski, but a composed 10.5 in the decisive stages gave Suruchi the edge. For Jedrzejewski, her penultimate shot of 9.5 proved to be costly. Earlier in the qualification round, Suruchi placed second with a score of 588. Two-time Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker finished 25th with a score of 574 and did not qualify for the final. Sainyam, competing for Ranking Points Only (RPO), was fifth with a total of 580. Asian Games champion Palak Gulia ranked 36th after shooting 570, while Simranpreet Kaur Brar (568) was 51st. Queen's Club Championships: Zheng beats Raducanu, enters semifinals
Top seed Zheng Qinwen beat home favourite Emma Raducanu 6-2 6-4 to move into the semifinals at the Queen's Club Championships on Friday. In an entertaining battle at the Andy Murray Arena, Zheng showed she could be a worthy contender heading into Wimbledon as she marched into her first semifinal on grass when she converted her fourth match point. Zheng has won singles titles on clay and hardcourts but she is still adapting to grass, with the 22-year-old showing a marked improvement in her match with Raducanu after she changed her shoes midway through a game when the Briton was serving. 'I want to apologise for my shoes. I didn't want to fall two times, but I just don't know how to run on grass,' Zheng said sheepishly. 'I still don't know when I have to change the grass shoes. I think right now is the time, so it's the new shoes. I feel much better to run. 'It was a really difficult match for me, especially (because) she has got more experience than me on the grasscourt. I'm just really happy to get into the semi-final for the first time on grass.' Zheng and Raducanu were neck-and-neck in the opening set until the Chinese world number five finally broke serve to go 4-2 up. But Zheng quickly recovered and levelled the set, before going 5-4 up with an overhead smash that kissed the line, with the crowd gasping as one when they watched a replay of the point. Serving to stay in the match, Raducanu produced a double fault to give Zheng three match points which she saved before the top seed prevailed.
