Expat allegedly kidnapped
LAHORE:
Unidentified men abducted an expat who had returned from Saudi Arabia to Shalimar area, demanding Rs15 million for his release.
The police said the man who had recently shifted from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan was kidnapped by armed men under mysterious circumstances. The complainant, Ahmed Saleh, lodged an FIR with Shalimar police.

PHOTO: FILE Two more prosecution witnesses on Tuesday gave their testimonies in a case related to alleged misuse of the official gift repository rules by PTI founder Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi during the former's term as the prime minister. Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand conducted the hearing of the case in a courtroom inside Rawalpindi's Central Prison popularly known as Adiala Jail. Both Imran and Bushrawho are detained in the prison facility — attended the hearing. After the testimonies, the counsel for Imran, Arshad Tabriz, cross-examined both the witnesses. Lawyer of Bushra Bibi, Qosain Faisal Mufti, will cross examine the witnesses at the next hearing. Bushra Bibi had refused to attend the last hearing of the case — also called the Toshakhana II casedespite repeated summonses by the court. The judge had later warned of cancelling her bail in the case. The court will resume hearing on June 11. According to the charge-sheet, Imran misused his position to acquire a Bulgari jewelry set that the Saudi crown prince presented as a gift during the couple's visit to Saudi Arabia between May 7 and 10, 2021. The set included a ring, bracelet, necklace, and a pair of earrings. According to the evidence gathered during the investigation, Imran and Bushra unlawfully retained the set. On May 18, 2021, the deputy military secretary informed the section officer of Toshakhana about the need to assess and declare the price of the gift, but it was not deposited. Bulgari sold the necklace for 300,000 euros and the earrings for 80,000 euros to a Saudi franchise on May 25, 2018. However, the price of the bracelet and ring could not be determined. As of May 28, 2021, the total estimated value of the Bulgari jewelry set was approximately Rs75,661,600. The necklace alone was valued at Rs56,496,000, and the earrings at Rs15,065,600.

Muggers snatch expensive phones

PHOTO: FILE An armed robbery occurred on Range Road in the jurisdiction of Westridge Police Station in Rawalpindi where robbers snatched expensive mobile phones. The robbers returned one of the phones to its owner, reportedly because it did not meet their preferences. CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing a vehicle parked on the roadside as two motorcycle-riding suspects pass by. The footage revealed that the masked suspects return moments later, stop near the vehicle and confront several individuals standing nearby. One of the suspects remains on the motorcycle while the other approaches the group, brandishing a pistol. The armed suspect can be seen forcibly taking mobile phones from a young man and the vehicle's driver. However, in a surprising move, the suspect tosses one of the snatched phones back to the driver, apparently dissatisfied with its quality. Despite the presence of four people at the scene, the robbers fled easily with several high-end mobile phones. One of the bystanders was seen making a phone call immediately after the assailants fled.

LPG safety bill in limbo for past two years
Listen to article Despite losing hundreds of lives in LPG blasts across the country, the law ministry has been reluctant to clear Ogra's LPG Industry Amendment Bill for the last two years, which envisages strict penalties, including imprisonment. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has proposed 10 years of imprisonment along with a Rs10 million fine. Secondly, the regulator has proposed 14 years of imprisonment with Rs15 million fine for those involved in cases of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder and browser blast. According to LPG industry officials, they have written letters multiple times to the law ministry, but it has not moved to save the lives of people from substandard LPG cylinders and bowsers. Ogra had submitted a draft bill to the law ministry two years ago, but it is still pending with no progress to date. The LPG Distributors Association of Pakistan, in a letter sent to the prime minister, has said that there is no proper legal framework to ensure safety in the LPG industry. Existing laws carry negligible penalties for illegal practices. In the letter, the LPG Association expressed concern over the continued delay in the Ogra amendment bill by the law ministry and demanded that Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar take prompt action on the matter. Incidents are occurring frequently due to the mixing of CO2 in LPG and those involved in this hazardous malpractice are being let off without punishment. The association has urged the Ministry of Law and Justice to present the proposed amendments to the bill in parliament, noting that strict penalties have been recommended for those responsible. If the bill is not tabled soon, the association warned it would be compelled to protest. In a video statement, Association Chairman Irfan Khokhar said that two explosions and four fatalities occur every day due to this issue. He noted that more than 36 letters have been sent to government bodies and the Ministry of Law, highlighting the delay in passing the bill. He cited incidents such as the tragic bowser explosion in DG Khan and the casualties from bowser blasts in Hyderabad last year. Khokhar further stated that in recent days five people lost their lives in an LPG explosion in Lahore. "We respectfully urge the immediate approval and implementation of the pending bill regarding petroleum and explosive materials, with a clear and enforceable ban on the manufacture and sale of substandard LPG cylinders, bowsers and valves across Pakistan. The continued operation of illegal and non-compliant manufacturers has led to frequent explosions, severe injuries and tragic loss of life."
