89 foreigners llinked to POGO, scam hubs deported
At least 89 foreigners who are allegedly involved in a scam hub in the Philippines have been deported, according to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC).
According to Saleema Refran's Thursday report on '24 Oras,' 77 Vietnamese and 12 South Koreans were deported as part of PAOCC's efforts to decogest its detention facility in Pasay City, as some are getting sick and in compliance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s order to hasten the deportation of arrested foreigners.
'Yung temporary detention center natin dito sa Pasay kasi almost 800 pa rin po yung nakakulong natin diyan. And kailangan bawasan na natin. So unti-unti, last month nakapag-deport na rin po kami ng 100 plus and now magde-deport po tayo ng 120 plus,' PAOCC executive director Gilbert Cruz said.
(We have almost 800 foreigners in our detention center in Pasay, and we need to decrease the population. So last month, we deported over 100 foreigners, and we will deport 120 more foreigners.)
Some foreigners will also be deported this month, depending on the Bureau of Immigration's release of documents and clearances from the National Bureau of Investigation.
Cruz also attended the dialogue between the Philippines and the Criminal Police Department of Vietnam to strengthen the cooperation of the two countries in the fight against illegal offshore gaming and related crimes. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BAP, GMA Integrated News

PH, China exchange radio challenges near Panata Island
The Philippines and China exchanged radio challenges on Friday near Panata Island in the West Philippine Sea. According to a ''24 Oras'' report by Chino Gaston on Friday, BRP Andres Bonifacio detected a Jiangkai class frigate (bow number 525) and two militia vessels before 8 a.m. while on a maritime patrol. The Philippine Navy vessel issued a radio challenge, which was not immediately answered by the Chinese side. They were within 4.6 nautical miles of the Chinese ship. 'We conducted the standard radio challenge within the territorial waters of Panata Island. They counter-challenged, and we counter-challenged that Panata Island and KIG (Kalayaan Island Group) are part of the Philippines. Once we issued our radio challenge, they immediately changed their course, going to Subi Reef,' said BRP Andres Bonifacio commanding officer Lieutenant Commander Christian Malabanan. Malabanan added it was critical to follow the rules of engagement in line with government policies to prevent violent confrontations. 'One action of the tactical units, which is kami po, is we'll escalate or de-escalate a certain situation. So, kung ano po yung binigay sa amin ng ROE (rules of engagement), stick po kami doon, and if ano yung general [instruction] ng government natin, yung po yung sinusunod namin. Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, including parts that fall within Manila's exclusive economic zone. 5 nabbed in Pangasinan for using fake land title in P4-M loan
Five individuals were arrested in Calasiao, Pangasinan, for using a fake land title to obtain a loan worth P4 million. According to a ''24 Oras'' report by John Consulta on Friday, the five suspects were arrested in an entrapment operation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation–Dagupan. Based on NBI's investigation, the five suspects applied for a loan and received millions in exchange for a property in Bayambang, Pangasinan. However, the Registry of Deeds said the land title was fake. 'Nagsabwatan ng limang subjects para makakuha ng loan muna sa complainant gamit isang titulong peke. Nakakuha sila ng apat na milyon na loan muna sa complainant, at hindi pa sila nakontento, at humingi ng karagdagan isang milyon mula sa complainant. Dahil dito ay nagkasa po tayo ng entrapment operation para mahuli itong limang subjects,' said NBI Dagupan agent-in-charge Mert Tello. (The five subjects have conspired to file for a loan with the complainant using a fake title. They received P4 million worth of loan from the complainant, and they still weren't content so they asked for another P1 million from the complainant. Because of this, we have conducted an entrapment operation to arrest these five suspects.) 'Kinasuhan natin ang limang subjects ng estafa through falsification of public document, at ang kaso na ating sinampa ay sinustain naman ng provincial prosecutor,' Tello said. (We charged the five subjects with estafa through falsification of public document, and the case was sustained by the provincial prosecutor.) Animal welfare group protests alleged maltreatment in Manila Zoo
Some members of an animal welfare group staged a rally at the Luneta Park to raise the issue of alleged malnourished animals at the Manila Zoo, according to a report on "24 Oras" Thursday. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said the animals at the zoo are being fed but they seem to be maltreated because of their situation beause they are not in their natural habitat and they live in small enclosures. PETA added that using a zoo to educate children is not acceptable. GMA News is getting a reaction from the Manila City government, which manages the Manila Zoo. The maltreatment of animals is strictly prohibited under the Animal Welfare Act. According to Republic Act No. 10631 or the Philippine Animal Welfare Act of 2013, any person who is found to torture, hurt or maltreat animals may be imprisoned for up to three years and fined for up to P250,000. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
