Carlow schoolkids make their own radio shows for Cruinniú na nÓg

RTÉjr Radio have teamed up with a creative collective in Carlow to bring the drama for Cruinniú na nÓg this Saturday. Cruinniú na nÓg 2025, Ireland's national day of free creativity for children and young people takes place on Saturday, June 7. Muine Bheag Arts worked with students from St Brigid's NS, Muine Bheag in Carlow to develop, produce and record two radio plays, The Portal (2024) and The Curse of CountVlas (2025). Over the past two years they've led a series of hands-on workshops as part of Cruinniú na nÓg in which the students wrote the material for the plays, acted out the roles of all the characters, created foley sounds and learned how to use recording equipment. The Portal (2024) The Portal recounts the tale of the Murphy twins, Mince and Marmalade, along with their associate Benice, who travel through the portal in Dublin to New York on a mission to save Ireland from darkness. The Portal will play out on RTÉjr Radio at 10am this Saturday, with a repeat at 2pm. The Curse of Count Vlas (2025) The Curse of Count Vlas tells the story of four 6th class friends who embark on a spooky adventure to rescue their town from a greedy property developer, Count Vlas, who has put a strange curse on Grandad Noel's farm. The Curse of Count Vlas will play at 11am with a repeat at 3pm. DJ For A Day Plus, be sure to tune in at 4pm to hear the team behind Count Vlas select some of their favourite tunes to celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg on DJ for a Day. Muine Bheag Arts is an artist-run organisation based in Carlow that engages with the local context to present projects in the public realm. The programme includes exhibitions, workshops, events, residencies, publishing and radio broadcasts. The organisation adopts a collaborative, welcoming and experimental approach and aims to foster dialogue between artists, audiences, community and place. Youth Theatre, has won a number of awards for her short films, and is an inspiration to other young people as to how they can express themselves through the arts. There will be no shortage of arts events for young people in Dundalk and surround areas to enjoy Saturday, June 7 as Cruinniú na nÓg 2025, hosted by Louth County Council has an exciting programme of events. In Dundalk, families can explore an archaeological dig at the County Museum, a buzzing programme at Redeemer FRC with a silent disco, messy play, and Lego fun, plus creative workshops at Bridge Street Studios including pottery, felting and watercolour painting. Creative Spark Downtown Hub will host Doodle Bots, natural pigment-making, and messy art with AAEX Teens. At Market Square, expect circus performances, mural workshops, spray painting, and much more. M.A.D. Youth Theatre will run workshops with local community groups, and SNAP will host a drama therapy session for their members. An Táin Arts Centre presents Rhythm is a Dancer, a collaborative live performance of original music and dance by young Louth talent, and a Night Time Economy Event featuring a live art performance of famous artwork recreations by M.A.D. Youth Theatre members. The centre will also showcase photography from Cruinniú workshops, WOWTH! county-wide art competition winning entries, and art by AAEX Teens and Pebble Lane Art Studio in their BasementGgallery workshop room from June 7 to 14. Don't miss the morning arts and crafts, interactive mural audio tour, and immersive games also offered at the Arts Centre. An exciting Bake Off event will take place at St Vincent's Secondary School for young experienced bakers! All branches of Louth Library Service will be buzzing with excitement on the day, offering activities like Lego workshops, glass fusing, needle felting, kite-making, and magic shows. There are also art workshops at Pebble Lane Studio Lordship, a magic show and art session in the Dee Hub, Ardee, and circus performances at Ardee Community Centre. Cruinniú na nÓg 2025, Ireland's national day of free creativity for children and young people is taking place on Saturday, June 7 and we are telling you to save the date! This all-island celebration will host over 1,000 free events across the country, celebrating creativity through music, art, circus, storytelling film and more. Ireland is the only country in the world to have a national day celebrating young people's creativity. Creative Ireland invites all young people to explore something new, unlock their imagination, and be part of this unique celebration of creativity and expression. Creative Ireland and RTÉ's celebrated national art competition for young people returns. The theme will be revealed on Cruinniú na nÓg day. And there's more. For Cruinniú na nÓg 2025, the island of Ireland will become a gallery as we launch an All Island exhibition showcasing incredible artworks by young artists from previous RTÉ This Is Art! competitions. Circus Explored Presented by Irish Street Arts, Circus and Spectacle Network (ISACS), invite young people to explore circus skills in a relaxed, picnic-style setting at locations nationwide. Circus Explored is a call to action for young people to dive into circus activities, develop new skills, and unlock their creativity. It's back again and it's where we found our spark last year. Rock the Block 2025 is a high-energy, youth-led celebration of music, dance, and street culture. A collision of genres, an explosion of sounds and a meeting of minds, Rock the Block returns and boldly plants itself on the Cruinniú na nÓg map for 2025, daring all young music-makers to come along and be heard! The Walls Project Wonder Walls for Cruinniú na nÓg invites young people across Ireland to spark their creativity and be part of an exciting hands-on street art experience! Throughout May, workshops will take place in 13 locations across Ireland. Guided by a professional mural artist, participants will explore techniques, experiment with colour and design, and bring their ideas to life through street art and graffiti. It's all about creativity, self-expression, and learning in a fun and supportive space. This will see 21 youth theatre groups will unite in five regional hubs to collaborate, perform, and celebrate their creativity as part of the Youth Theatre Ireland project. Over the past few months, 20 youth theatres across the island have been creating, writing, designing, directing, and rehearsing to showcase their talents on Cruinniú na nÓg Day 2025. We Own the Castle A live youth music festival set in the historic surrounds of Swords Castle, giving young performers a chance to take centre stage.
