Man dies, wife and two children injured in two-vehicle collision on North-South highway near Kepala Batas
KEPALA BATAS, June 27 — A man, who was travelling with his wife and two children, was killed in an accident involving two vehicles at Kilometre 127.8 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) near here today.
Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Penang, John Sagun Francis, said the department received an emergency call at 7.51am before dispatching a team from the Kepala Batas Fire and Rescue Station to the scene.
'The accident involved a Proton Wira and a Proton Saga BLM. There were five victims, three adults and two children, who were rescued by members of the public before our team arrived,' he said in a statement.
He identified the deceased as the 33-year-old driver of the Proton Wira, who was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The body was sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) for post-mortem.
'His wife suffered spinal injuries while their two children, aged six and eight, were slightly injured,' he added. The driver of the Proton Saga, a 35-year-old man, also suffered minor injuries. — Bernama

PUTRAJAYA : The Federal Court has agreed to hear an appeal by seven Orang Asli villagers from Pekan against a private firm on the alleged destruction of their ancestral graves for agriculture development. Rosli Jedut, Atan Baro, Melah Hamid, Awang Bako, Esah Wir, Kasim Awang, and Majib Kasim filed a lawsuit against Agrobest (M) Sdn Bhd and two employees, seeking compensation after the graves in Kampung Batu 20 were allegedly overrun by bulldozers eight years ago. They claimed the company and employees had disrespected their ancestors and culture. The Kuantan High Court ruled in 2023 that the company was liable for the wrongful act and awarded each of the plaintiffs RM20,000 as damages. However, the appeals court set aside the decision last year, ruling that the seven men lacked the legal standing to file the suit. It said they no longer had possession and control of the land. Lawyers Steven Thiru and Ananthan Moorthi told FMT that a panel of three apex court judges, led by Justice Nordin Hassan, had on Thursday granted the seven men leave to appeal in their bid to reinstate the High Court ruling. Also on the bench hearing the application were Justices Abu Jais Bakar and Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera. 'The Federal Court held that important questions of law were raised concerning the rights of the Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia, which required a full determination by the highest court,' they said. The questions of law touch on issues relating to locus standi, the extinguishment of rights, and duty of care. Lawyers Henry Ngok and Ng Si Hui appeared for the company and employees.

6 students expelled from Terengganu MRSM for bullying
It was reported yesterday that police had identified five Form Three students allegedly involved in the bullying of a Form Two student at the MRSM college in Besut, Terengganu. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki says six students who bullied a 14-year-old student at a Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut, Terengganu, have been expelled. He said the six were found to have physically bullied the Form Two student. 'No excuses. #YouTouchYouGo,' Asyraf said in a Facebook post yesterday. It was earlier reported that police had identified five Form Three students allegedly involved in the bullying of a Form Two student. Besut police chief Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said a remand application for the suspects would be made to assist in further investigations. He said the victim, in his report, claimed that he was forced to squat with slippers on his head for 40 minutes at about 11.30pm on Tuesday. The victim also claimed he was punched in the stomach and slapped in the face by several Form Three students at the hostel. Azamuddin said the incident was discovered by a warden on duty, who brought the victim and suspects to the warden's office. The student was brought to hospital for treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The expulsion of six students in a recent bullying case in Besut should serve as a lesson to students at other Mara Junior Science Colleges, said Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Asyraf said the six students were expelled after an investigation found that they were involved in bullying their juniors. He said bullying was not a matter to be taken lightly. 'I have repeatedly emphasised that I will not compromise on any form of bullying. What happened in Besut is very disappointing for me,' he said, Bernama reported. 'I cannot forgive any form of bullying … I am firm on this matter,' he told reporters after an Umno meeting in Pasir Mas today. Five of the students, aged between 15 and 17, have been taken into custody in connection with the case after a 14-year-old student reported that he was forced to squat with slippers on his head for 40 minutes at about 11.30pm on Tuesday. He also alleged he was punched in the stomach and slapped in the face by several Form 3 students at the hostel.
