The body of a Kenyan officer who died in Haiti arrives home for burial
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The body of a Kenyan police officer who died in Haiti's U.N.-backed multinational mission to combat violent gangs has been returned home.
The body of Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was on Monday night received by his family and senior police officers in the capital, Nairobi. The officer died on Feb. 23 after he was fatally shot by gangs in a western region of Haiti. He was the first Kenyan to be killed during the mission, which began deploying in June.
No date has been announced for his funeral.
A contingent of around 800 Kenyan police is leading the mission that includes soldiers and police from countries such as Jamaica, Guatemala and El Salvador who are working alongside Haiti's National Police.
Last week, Kenya's police inspector general Douglas Kanja described the death of the Kenyan officer as 'a great loss' and disputed reports that Kenyan officers were ill-equipped to deal with violent gangs in Haiti.
Kanja said the well-being of the officers was Kenya's priority and that they are 'well-trained for the mission.'
Last year Haiti and the U.S. warned that the mission that began in June lacks personnel and resources and called for a U.N. peacekeeping mission to replace the current deployment.
Last month, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said he would request that the U.N assumes funding for the structural and logistical expenses of the multinational force.

LONDON (AP) — British tennis player Katie Boulter has told the BBC she received death threats targeting her and her family during the French Open, saying in an interview that online abuse has become the norm and that she is worried about the impact it will have on younger players. Boulter, who shared with the BBC screenshots of the messages, said she is worried about the toll the widespread abuse takes on younger players. 'At the very start of my career, it's probably something I took very personally... getting comments about the way you look,' she said. 'It becomes more apparent every single time you go on your phone. 'I think it increases in number and it also increases in the level of things that people say. I don't think there's anything off the cards now.' Many other players have previously reported online abuse . In a bid to try to protect athletes from that sort of abuse, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Women's Tennis Association (WTA), All England Lawn Tennis Club and United States Tennis Association in 2023 launched the Threat Matrix. The program monitors public-facing social accounts for abusive and threatening content on social networks. It also provides support for players. According to statistics provided to the BBC by data science firm Signify, the ITF and WTA, about 8,000 abusive, violent or threatening messages were sent publicly to 458 tennis players through their social media accounts in 2024. Boulter, who received abuse after wins as well as losses, said a lot of it comes from people who have placed bets on her matches. 'As far as death threats, it's just not something you want to be reading straight after an emotional loss,' she said. 'A lot of the time you get it after you win as well.' According to Signify, angry gamblers sent 40% of all detected abuse, with messages clearly related to betting activity because of the timing or content of the abuse. Two suspects detained in the killing of an Australian tourist in Bali
DENPASAR, Indonesia (AP) — Authorities have detained two suspects in the fatal shooting of an Australian tourist on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, the national police chief said Tuesday. 'One of the suspects is now in Jakarta and while another one is traveling from abroad to Jakarta,' National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo told reporters. One suspect is detained in the capital and the other was detained overseas and is being returned to Indonesia under the supervision of authorities.
