Apple to Debut iOS 26, macOS 26 in Major Rebrand to Mark Software Redesigns
(Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. is planning the most sweeping change yet to its operating system names, part of a software overhaul that extends to all its devices. NYC Congestion Toll Brings In $216 Million in First Four Months NY Wins Order Against US Funding Freeze in Congestion Fight The next Apple operating systems will be identified by year, rather than with a version number, according to people with knowledge of the matter. That means the current iOS 18 will give way to 'iOS 26,' said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plan is still private. Other updates will be known as iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26. Apple is making the change to bring consistency to its branding and move away from an approach that can be confusing to customers and developers. Today's operating systems — including iOS 18, watchOS 12, macOS 15 and visionOS 2 — use different numbers because their initial versions didn't debut at the same time. A spokesperson for Cupertino, California-based Apple declined to comment. The company will announce the shift at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9. The branding will accompany fresh user interfaces across the operating systems — an attempt to ensure a more cohesive experience when people move between devices. The new look, dubbed Solarium internally, will include tvOS, watchOS and parts of visionOS, Bloomberg News reported this week. The latest naming strategy is reminiscent of approaches taken by both Samsung Electronics Co. and Microsoft Corp. In 2020, Samsung renamed its flagship Galaxy S phone line after its launch year, moving to the Galaxy S20. That device's predecessor, which debuted in 2019, was the Galaxy S10, representing the 10th generation. In 1995, Microsoft shifted to naming major operating systems after the year they launched, rolling out Windows 95 and then Windows 98 and Windows 2000. The big difference is Apple will use the upcoming year rather than the current one. Though its next operating systems will launch around September 2025, they'll be named for 2026 — not unlike how car companies market their vehicles. If Apple keeps the strategy, the following set of releases will carry the 27 moniker. Apple previously attempted something similar with its software bundles for office work and creativity apps. In August 2007, it rolled out iWork '08 and iLife '08. That was eventually followed by iLife '11, which went on sale in October 2010. As part of the changes, Apple plans to give the iPad a more Mac-like experience, potentially making it more useful for office work. And the company is opening up its AI models to third-party developers, letting them tap into the underlying technology used by the Apple Intelligence platform. Other new features coming this year include a live-translation mode for AirPods and the Siri voice assistant, as well as an eye-scrolling option on the Vision Pro headset. In the artificial intelligence realm, Apple is planning health features and an AI-enabled battery management mode. There also will be a new bidirectional Arabic and English keyboard, a digital calligraphy pen for Apple Pencil users and a new app for gaming on Apple devices. More people are ditching Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile according to new data — here's where they're going
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's been a long time since I was on a cell phone plan from any of the big three wireless carriers, but it looks like more people are ditching them as well, at least according to the latest data reports. I'm not surprised by this sudden shift either, especially when some of the best cheap cell phone plans come from MVNOs and regional wireless carriers. From increasing prices to severe outages, it hasn't been easy for traditional wireless carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile to keep their customers. In fact, they're losing out to cable companies of all things. What's really surprising is that the MoffettNathanson report shows that cable companies are tacking on new customers at an impressive rate — led by Charter Communications, Comcast and Altice USA. They added 886,000 lines during the first three months of the year, which is up from the 804,000 accounted for during the same period in 2024. Charter Communications alone added 514,000 lines in Q1 2025, which outperformed the 495,000 lines that T-Mobile gained for the same period. Meanwhile, rivals AT&T added 324,000 — while Verizon was red for the period with a loss of 289,000 customers. Verizon recently added a 3-year price lock guarantee to entice customers, a move that aims to mitigate fears about phone plan rates continually increasing. Comcast also saw positive gains, adding 323,000 customers in Q1 2025, with Altice gaining 49,000 customers. In total, cable companies added 19.05 million mobile lines, which indicates that more people are interested in other cell phone plans beyond those from the big three carriers. Even though cable companies have long established themselves as budget alternatives and particularly target the lower end of the market, they're now branching out by offering a wide range of cell phone plans — with a bigger focus on adding premium plans and devices. It also helps that these phone plan services are sometimes bundled in with home broadband service. Forget iOS 19 — Apple may change the name of its upcoming iPhone software update
When Apple opens up its WWDC 2025 developers conference in a couple of weeks, we expect to see an interface overhaul of all the software that controls its phones, computers, tablets and wearables. And it may not just be the look of the software that's changing. Along with aesthetic changes, Apple will reportedly rebrand its many operating systems, in an effort to have consistent names across its lineup. That comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who is reporting that Apple wants to switch to year-based names. That means the iPhone software update we were expecting to be called iOS 19 would instead go by iOS 26 — as in 2026. The rest of Apple's software — iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, macOS 26 and visionOS 26 — would follow the same pattern. The name changes would accompany a more unified approach to the interfaces of Apple's software. Codenamed Solarium, the refresh is expected to introduce more translucent panels and rounded icons, taking its cues from visionOS on Apple's Vision Pro headset. The idea behind the common look is to deliver a more unified experience across different Apple devices. And that same thinking apparently applies to what the software should be called, too. Currently, the various OSes all have different version numbers — iOS 18, macOS 15 and watchOS 12, to name a few. Under the new system, you wouldn't have to remember what version number a particular OS was on — you'd just have to refer to the year. The potential rebrand is reminiscent of a similar move rival Samsung made in 2020 when it change the Galaxy S line to a launch year naming convention with the Galaxy S20 series. The previous year's devices were the Galaxy S10, the 10th generation of Galaxy S phones. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The difference here though is that Apple is using the upcoming year, rather than the launch year. Despite its new operating systems likely launching in September around the release of the iPhone 17, they'll be named for 2026, similar to how car companies label the latest iterations of their vehicles which also tend to launch in the fall. Gurman has a good track record of reporting on Apple developments, so we're inclined to believe that this will be the case in a couple of weeks. That said, Apple has declined to comment on the name change, and allegedly the plan is still in the works. We'll know more about Solarium and the rebranded OSes starting June 9 when Apple has set WWDC 2025 to take place. It should be one of the most important WWDCs in over a decade.
