Looking for one of the best collagen supplements? Our beauty and wellness editor really rates this one for adding to smoothies, saying she can really notice a difference
Collagen supplements are a hot topic in beauty nowadays, and opinion on them is often divided: some skincare experts swear by them, others claims that there's not much independent evidence at the moment to determine a definite improvement in the skin, hair and nails. I personally have been taking collagen powders and capsules for years, however, and have seen the positive effect they're had on me – and this one's a new firm favourite.
The way that I prefer to take collagen supplements is as a powder mixed into my morning smoothie, and Verve's Naked Beauty Collagen works perfectly for this. Containing a super-blend of not only 12,500 mg of marine collagen but also 13 other skin-boosting ingredients such as biotin, zinc, vitamin C and probiotics, it's designed to be mixed into water or, like I do, another type of drink. I've been starting my day with it for months now, and I've noticed a huge difference.
Firstly, while some customers have remarked that the taste isn't particularly pleasant when mixed with water, I find it enhances the taste of my morning smoothie (I whizz it together with oat milk, frozen berries, a spoonful of peanut butter and a few oats) – it gives it a slight vanilla taste, and makes it thicker. I drink this at about 10am, and it fills me up until at least 1pm.
I also only use half of the recommended dose – one scoop instead of two – and have still seen results. This means that one of these big pouches – which costs £64 on monthly subscription or £80 for a one-off purchase – lasts me two months instead of one, and works out at about £1 a serving.
Verve claims that shoppers can expect to see improvements such as increased skin elasticity, a reduction in wrinkles and extra hydration from taking this regularly and over time, but I find it hard to monitor my skin; I'm often trying new skincare, and my complexion appears to have a mind of its own: sometimes I have no problems, sometimes I get months of breakouts.
Where I have noticed a noticeable improvement, though, is in my nails. They used to be so weak and bendy, splitting constantly, but now they're so much stronger, and never flake or split – and I'm putting it down to taking this beauty powder regularly.
Good quality collagen supplements aren't cheap, but as long as I can afford them, I'll always take ones like this Verve one; they fit easily into my routine, and I think make a difference.
If you don't drink smoothies and prefer a 'one gulp and done' collagen supplement instead, try Gold Collagen Pure, from £30 for 30 days' worth, (this is one of the cheapest of several varieties the brand sells). Alternatively Vida Glow Natural Marine Collagen, from £33.15 for 30 doses, is one that actually does taste nice mixed in water; it's a favourite amongst beauty editors.

Family, friends gather for balloon release to honor teens killed in Limerick Township crash

It was an emotional day for family and friends of the three teens who were killed in a crash Wednesday following a police chase in Limerick Township. Loved ones of Gabriel Cooper, 17, Nasir Youk, 17 and Siniyah Newsuan, 17, came together for a balloon release to honor their lives two days after their deaths. "We have to hold onto those beautiful memories," said Meelin Youk, Nasir's aunt. Over 100 people were in attendance for the balloon release in Spring City, where the kids grew up. Nasir Youk and Newsuan were rising juniors at Owen J. Roberts High School. Cooper was also a former student of the district. Their teachers and classmates were also present during the balloon release. In attendance was also Nasir Youk's mother, who is heartbroken over the loss. "This is just unbelievable," Angela Andrews, Nasir Youk's mother, said. "He was a good kid. He was a good kid. He was just living a full life as a kid would. This is unfortunate. I'm upset. I am extremely upset." Siniyah Newsuan, 17, [left], Nasir Youk, 17, [middle] and Gabriel Cooper, 17 [right]. CBS News Philadelphia. A 15-year-old boy was injured as well. Surveillance video captured the moment before the crash shows a car speeding down Ridge Pike with police not far behind. According to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, the teens were connected to a potential theft at a nearby Target. Nasir Youk's grandmother, Meejain Youk, believes her grandson should still be alive. "Why didn't you stop them at the door?" she said. "Why did you wait until they got in the car, and then the police had the license plate number. They did not have to pursue," she said. "The reason they ran is because they were afraid." Andrews said the family has yet to speak with police or the DA's office about what happened, but she hopes they can get answers soon. "The detectives or whoever was supposed to call me back never called me back," she said. CBS News Philadelphia reached out to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office regarding the family's concerns about the police chase, but a spokesperson said the police couldn't comment because it's still an active investigation.

Yemen's Houthis "warn" companies to leave Israel

The Houthis yesterday renewed their warning to all firms investing in Israel, urging them to leave immediately or risk bearing full responsibility for any potential losses. Mahdi Al-Mashat, president of the Supreme Political Council — the highest governing authority in the Houthi-led administration in Sanaa — called on all companies investing in Israel to take the Yemeni warning seriously and to withdraw quickly, stressing that the environment is no longer safe. His remarks were reported by Houthi-run media. 'Companies that remain in the Zionist entity after our warning will have to bear the consequences of their insistence and be held accountable for any losses they may incur,' he added. 'We may take additional decisions in the coming days, if necessary, which would place investment companies within the Zionist entity at real and serious risk.' 'The disregard shown by some investment firms for our forces' warnings makes their operations inside the entity a dangerous gamble, which could come at a heavy cost,' Al-Mashat added. He accused the Israeli occupation government of failing to protect the interests of private companies, saying: 'The criminal Netanyahu government does not care about the safety of investment companies. It gambles with their security to serve its own interests. A government that ignores the lives of its own captives will certainly not care about the safety of others' companies and investments.'

Novak Djokovic hints at retirement after French Open defeat to Jannik Sinner

Novak Djokovic may have played his final match at the French Open. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was hoping to extend his record at Roland Garros this weekend with a trip to the men's singles final, but he lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets Friday. Djokovic, 38, appeared emotional as he collected his bags. He kissed his hand and touched the clay surface at Court Philippe-Chatrier. He then spoke about the match, signaling it may have been his last at the French Open. "I mean, this could have been the last match ever I played here, so I don't know. That's why I was a bit more emotional even in the end," he said. "But if this was the farewell match of the Roland-Garros for me in my career, it was a wonderful one in terms of the atmosphere and what I got from the crowd." Of the "Big Three," only Djokovic remains active — and dominant. AMERICAN TENNIS STAR JESSICA PEGULA SLAMS 'ABSOLUTELY CRAZY' COMMENTS AFTER LOSING FRENCH OPEN MATCH"Do I wish to play more? Yes, I do. But will I be able to play here in 12 months time? I don't know," he added. "I said it could have been my last match (here). I didn't say it was." Djokovic said he plans to compete at Wimbledon. Last year marked the first time in seven years the Serbian tennis pro failed to win a Grand Slam. His last win came in 2023 at the U.S. Open. His last win at Wimbledon was in 2022. "I feel like I want to play Wimbledon. I want to play U.S. Open. Those two, for sure. For the rest, I'm not so sure," he said.
