An Indian Navy staffer posted at the naval headquarters in Delhi has been arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive information to a Pakistani handler in exchange for money, PTI reported on Thursday.
Vishal Yadav, an upper division clerk in the Directorate of Dockyard, is from Rewari in Haryana. He was arrested in Rajasthan's Jaipur on Wednesday.
Yadav had allegedly shared information about Operation Sindoor with the handler.
The matter will be jointly investigated by several security agencies.
Vishnu Kant Gupta, Jaipur's inspector general of police (Crime Investigation Department-Security) said that Yadav had allegedly leaked the classified details to a female Pakistani handler who was posing as an Indian woman, PTI reported.
'Yadav confessed to receiving approximately Rs 2 lakh in total for the information he passed on,' Gupta was quoted as saying. 'This included Rs 50,000 for leaking information related to Operation Sindoor.'
Some of the payments were through cryptocurrency, said the police officer.
Yadav was approached by the Pakistani operative through the social media platform Facebook, PTI quoted unidentified intelligence officials as saying. The handler had sent a friend request using a fake profile with the name Priya Sharma.
The two communicated regularly on WhatsApp and later Telegram, which offers end-to-end encryption.
End-to-end encryption refers to a method of secure communication in which only the sender of the message and the receiver can access the content. No one in between, including the service provider, has access to the communication.
Yadav initially received payments of Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 for lower-grade information, the police were quoted as saying. He was subsequently encouraged to provide more valuable intelligence in exchange for higher payments.
The forensic examination of his mobile phone uncovered extensive evidence, including financial transactions, sensitive messages and confidential data that he had sent to the Pakistani handler, PTI quoted the police as saying.
Since May, several persons, including two YouTubers, have been arrested on allegations of spying for Pakistan.
The Rajasthan Police had also on June 3 said that a state government employee was arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan. The person, Shakur Khan, had been in regular contact with persons associated with the Pakistani High Commission, the police said.
The arrests came amid heightened military tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad that escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22.
On May 30, the National Investigation Agency conducted raids at 15 locations in eight states that were suspected to be linked to alleged Pakistani intelligence operatives.

Karnataka forest minister orders probe into 'unnatural death' of tigress, four cubs

Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre on Thursday ordered a probe into the "unnatural death" of a tigress and four cubs in Male Mahadeshwara Hills under the Hugyam forest range. Bengaluru: Mortal remains of a tigress after it died with four cubs at Male Mahadeshwara Hills under the Hugyam forest range, in Bengaluru.(PTI) The tigress and the cubs were found dead during routine morning patrol by vigilant frontline staff, officials said. Expressing sorrow over the incident, Khandre immediately ordered an investigation into the matter, which will be led by a team under the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF). As per preliminary information, the tigers died allegedly due to poisoning. However, a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of death, they said. "The area has been immediately cordoned off and declared a protected zone. Standard Scene of Crime (SoC) protocols have been invoked, with a 500-meter sweep radius activated to preserve and collect all physical evidence. A five-member team expert has undertaken a comprehensive necropsy following NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority) protocols," Khandre said, in a statement. The minister said comprehensive tissue, blood, and stomach samples are being processed for toxicology, histopathology, and DNA profiling. In accordance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and NTCA guidelines, a high-level inquiry committee has been initiated following the orders of the Chief Wildlife Warden, Karnataka. The committee shall submit a comprehensive report within 14 days, he said. Following the incident, the forest department has strengthened monitoring and anti-poaching vigilance across the Hugyam range. According to Kandre, real-time drone surveillance, infrared cameras, and GPS-based M-STRIPES patrols have been escalated across the range and all Anti-Poaching Camps (APCs) are on high alert. Intensive sweeps for snares, poison baits and traps are being conducted and a confidential informer network with reward mechanisms is operational for actionable intelligence, he said. The minister has issued instructions to the Additional Chief Secretary and the Chief Wildlife Warden of the forest department, stating that the government is taking the deaths of five tigers very seriously and has directed that action be taken against those found guilty. Referring to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Project Tiger for the protection of endangered tigers, the minister noted that Karnataka has also taken proactive steps in tiger conservation. With 563 tigers, the state ranks second in the country. He added that it is deeply painful that five tigers died unnaturally in a single day in a state known for its tiger conservation. "If negligence by forest staff is found, or if the deaths were caused by electrocution, poisoning, or any other reason, criminal cases should be filed against those responsible and appropriate action taken," he stated. "The Karnataka Forest Department upholds a strict zero-tolerance policy against wildlife crime. Any evidence of foul play, negligence, or human interference will invite stringent legal action under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972," he added. The Minister appealed to local communities, wildlife enthusiasts, and the general public to stand united in this moment of loss. "Tiger conservation is a collective responsibility. A 24x7 confidential helpline has been activated at the Division Office to receive credible tips on wildlife crimes," he added.

UNESCO working with India on impact of AI in addressing social economic issues: Official

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills The UNESCO is working with India on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing social and economic issues with technological innovation as New Delhi prepares to host the global summit on AI impact early next year, an official said on Friday."India is a shining star for the rest of the world in terms of digital transformation and in terms of addressing some of the social and economic issues with technological innovation and the right policy," said Irakli Khodeli, Head of Ethics of AI Unit, Social and Human Sciences Sector, UNESCO."The world is looking up to India to learn about that. It would be a significant part of the next year's summit as well," the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) official told PTI here at the "Third UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI 2025".UNESCO, which has 193 countries as members, held the first summit in 2023 in the UK and the second in 2024 in South Korea on AI "Safety". The event was held in Paris in February this year on AI "Action"."It is time now for action to demonstrate AI impact," he said, pointing out that the time for discussing the ethical framework had passed with the recommendation report on AI."We hope to be working with the (Indian) government as we start preparing for the Global Summit on AI Impact to be hosted by India early next," Khodeli said."This is going to be a major event as participants will give updates, share their experiences and lessons learned," he underlining UNESCO's working relationship with the Indian government as a knowledge partner during India's G20 Presidency in 2023, said: "India has been an important partner of UNESCO in our journey from the very beginning when the AI recommendation was prepared."India played a critical role and had an expert in the 24-member advocate group that prepared the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Recommendation report -- a primary instrument adopted four years ago by the 193 UNESCO member official said the ethics policy is universally valid and pursued the report, UNESCO has deployed another report, "Readiness Assessment Methodology", for member countries to understand AI opportunities and the gaps to be filled for them to take full advantage of the revolutionary technology."India is one of the top innovators - both in terms of technology and also in term of policy to govern the technology," observed Khodeli, underscoring the importance of policy innovation to ensure the technology is put to the best use for mankind, and create an environment that is conducive to investment and noted India's extensive work on technologies, and said UNESCO was capturing those good practices, knowledge and experiences of governance of AI to make them available to the rest of the world for them to replicate such return, UNESCO is also bringing to India what the grouping has learned from the rest of the world, citing the example of the Bangkok Forum, where brainstorming sessions were held by close to 50 member countries, represented by senior officials at ministerial levels, he said."We are doing the Readiness Assessment with over 70 countries. We are learning a lot about what works to promote AI and what doesn't work," he said, adding that the experiences and knowledge are shared with members, including India."India is famous for exporting its talent, and everybody knows the important part the people of Indian-origin play in big tech corporations around the world. That is something to be very proud of," he said UNESCO wants AI engineers to consider ethics as part of designing the technology, and during various talent trainings, ethics is part of the the AI as an incredible breakthrough by humanity, Khodeli felt more work needed to be done to make the technology less access to AI means more data centres and infrastructure for the ecosystem that is currently resource-intensive, he called for a balance and parallel development of technology in terms of environment and resources, as this technology is predictable and beyond human brain revolution."We need to focus on new AI systems that are less resource-intensive," he emphasised, adding, "This transformation of AI is set to continue."
