Ex-finance Officer Gets 16 Months Jail, RM5,000 Fine For CBT
KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- A former finance officer of a petrol station was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment and fined RM5,000 by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving over RM180,000 in company funds.
Judge Azrul Darus ordered Siti Nurain Mohamad Ghazali, 37, to serve the custodial sentence from the date of her remand on May 22. He further ordered that she serve an additional six months' imprisonment in default of settling the fine.
Siti Nurain was accused of misappropriating RM182,884.02 that had been allocated for supplier payments. The offence was committed between April and December 2024 at a petrol station along Jalan Tun Razak.
She was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of not less than one year and up to 14 years, with caning, and a fine.
According to the statement of facts, during an audit conducted on February 5, the company discovered discrepancies in its financial records and summoned the accused for questioning.
The court was informed that the accused had misappropriated funds designated for payments to cigarette suppliers between April and December 2024 by systematically transferring the monies into her personal bank account.
In mitigation, Siti Nurain, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lenient sentence, saying she has young children, is undergoing psychiatric treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and requires daily medication.
'My husband has lost his source of income. I am responsible for supporting our children, aged eight, 10 and 11. I have repented during the one-month remand and will not repeat this offence,' she said.
Deputy public prosecutor M. Saravanan, however, urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence, arguing that the accused had abused her position for personal gain.

Man found dead at home, police suspect murder
IPOH: A 57-year-old man was found dead in a pool of blood at his home in Taman Tasek Damai, with authorities suspecting foul play involving a sharp weapon. The deceased, identified as Chang Kim Fuat, was discovered lying unconscious in the kitchen of his residence on Jalan Tawas Baru at 7.30pm yesterday (June 24). District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the victim's son, upon returning home from work, found the house in disarray and immediately alerted the authorities. "Initial forensic findings indicate the victim suffered stab wounds to the right side of the abdomen and slash injuries to the right side of the chest. "A wooden-handled knife, approximately 22cm long, was found in the kitchen sink. Although it had been cleaned, forensic swab tests suggest it may have been the murder weapon," he added. He said a neighbour last saw the victim around 11am yesterday, smoking outside the house. He said there were no signs of forced entry, but the front door was found open and the living room appeared disturbed. "The victim, who lived with his adult son and worked part-time selling health products, reportedly last responded to his son's text messages at 2.40pm. "His son became suspicious after receiving no reply to subsequent messages and decided to return home early. "When he arrived at around 7.30pm, he found the front gate closed, but the grille and glass doors were open. "He also noticed the sofa in the living room was out of place. "He went to the kitchen and discovered the deceased lying on his back, covered in blood," he said. He said no valuables were reported missing and the home's closed-circuit television (CCTV) system was not functioning at the time. "His body has been sent to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) for a post-mortem examination," he said, adding that the motive remains unclear and no arrests have been made so far.
