Geneva: Novak Djokovic celebrated his 38th birthday with hard-fought revenge at the Geneva Open. The second seed held firm for a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Matteo Arnaldi to reach the semi-finals at the clay ATP 250 event for the second consecutive year.
Djokovic, who fell to Arnaldi at the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid last month, reeled off five straight games from 1-4 in the second set to seal a one-hour, 40-minute victory.
'It's great to be in the semi-finals again. Hopefully this year I can go at least a step further, that's the goal. I think I'm playing really good tennis. A straight-sets win, but it was much closer than the score indicates. I was 4-1 down in the second, but somehow I didn't lose a game.
'I found the optimal state and balance, mentally and emotionally, to be able to play my best tennis when it was most needed. Hopefully I can carry that into tomorrow,' said Djokovic. Djokovic is now within two victories of claiming his 100th tour-level trophy, with which he would join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only men to hit the triple-digit mark in the Open Era.
The Serb will next play qualifier Cameron Norrie. The Briton defeated fifth seed Alexei Popyrin 7-6(6), 6-4 to reach his ninth tour-level semi-final on clay and first since Rio de Janeiro last year. In the other half of the draw, Hubert Hurkacz continued his strong run of form by dismissing top seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-6(5) in a high-quality serving battle.
Hurkacz, who reached the quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome last week, triumphed at the last clay-court ATP 250 he played in Estoril last year.

Gen Z aim to deny history-chasing Djokovic

Paris, June 6 (UNI) The era of the 'Big Three' may be coming to an end - but the threat has not disappeared. Players born in the 1990s were restricted to just two Grand Slam singles titles between them as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic diced up the major prizes for more than two decades. Two players born after 2000 have captured seven major titles between them. That is the current top two of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who are on a collision course in Paris. But Novak Djokovic still looms large as the 'Gen Z' players look to add to their hauls. The 38-year-old faces Sinner - who is 15 years younger than him - in Friday's first French Open semi-final, having become the oldest man to reach the last four since 1968, the BBC reported. "I think at the moment he's a bit underrated," world number three Alexander Zverev said after falling to Djokovic in four sets on Wednesday. "I think a lot of people count him out already, but this year he's had wins over Carlos at the Australian Open, he has beaten me at the French Open. "Forget the age. For any player, those are pretty good results." Defending champion Alcaraz, meanwhile, will look to continue his recent dominance over Lorenzo Musetti in the second semi-final. Djokovic is bidding for another slice of history. Win in Paris and he will secure a record-breaking 25th major singles title. But no man has defeated the top three men's players to win a major since the ATP rankings were introduced. Djokovic is on a nine-match winning streak heading into the 51st major semi-final of his career. Victory in Geneva last month secured him the 100th tour-level title of his career - a timely confidence boost following a run of three successive defeats. That run included consecutive opening-round defeats to begin his clay-court season, and the Olympic champion entered Roland Garros in the unusual position of sixth seed. But he showed age is not inhibiting him as he won a 41-shot rally to save a break point in the fourth set on his way to beating Zverev in three hours and 18 minutes. He displayed impressive variety to disrupt the German's baseline dominance with drop shots and serve-and-volley tactics. Sinner, however, will pose a sterner test. While their head-to-head record stands at 4-4, the Italian has won their past three meetings. The reigning US Open and Australian Open champion is on a 19-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments - the fourth longest this century after the Djokovic (30), Federer (27) and Nadal (25). He is chasing history of his own at Roland Garros, seeking to become the first Italian man to win the tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976. In his 52nd week as world number one - despite serving a three-month doping suspension between February and May - Sinner could become the first man to win three consecutive majors since Djokovic in 2021. With unshakeable consistency and devastating precision, Sinner is yet to drop a set this fortnight before attempting to break down arguably the greatest defensive player the game has seen. UNI BM

French Open 2025: Mentalist Novak Djokovic ready for physical Jannik Sinner battle

Novak Djokovic reacts to fans' cheers during a quarterfinal match against Alexander Zverev during the French Open at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris. (AP) Paris: Novak Djokovic has many descriptors, but nothing quite typifies the 24-time Grand Slam champion like the word 'Mentalist'. The 38-year-old likes to lift an exchange, take it beyond the chalked lines, to that space between the ears. It's where most competitors shrink and shrivel, while some others simply shift gear into beast mode. That is the precise space where the sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic will hope to play the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, when the duo face-off in the French Open semifinals on Friday. It's the pair's ninth meeting with the head-to-head locked at 4-4. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'These kinds of matchups and challenges extract the best out of me. Playing best-of-five in the later stages of a Grand Slam, against the world No. 1, there can't be greater motivation for me at this age,' Djokovic said. 'I don't think, how am I going to stop him? I think how am I going to execute what I want to do on the court?' Djokovic versus Sinner, the best player in history versus the No. 1 player in the world, is a dream semifinal. The matchup has everything — spice and ice, the romance of a clash between generations, energy and explosive edge versus 24-carat experience. In playing style, Sinner is the one who most resembles Djokovic from the younger cohort. His strengths are the same as the Serb, including the mental edge — only he's 14 years younger. The Italian, 23, who returned to competition after serving a three-month ban for testing positive for Clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid, has faced mixed reactions in the locker room since the tests were made public last August. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo There has been support, however slim, indifference too, but a majority of the players felt he received preferential treatment. 'The two cases of Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner have attracted a lot of attention and it's not a good image for our sport,' Djokovic said earlier this year. 'A majority of the players don't feel that (the process is) fair. It appears that you can almost affect the outcome if you are a top player, if you have access to the top lawyers.' Sinner has won all of the pair's last three meetings, played in a span of 10 months, between November 2023 and October 2024. The matches were played on hardcourts, which is the preferred surface of both players, but the three-time Roland Garros champion, who achieved a 100th singles... played a 250 Series event in Geneva, where he clinched his 100th Tour-level title, checking a box, before arriving in Paris. 'The win against Alcaraz in the quarters of the Australian Open, the win against Zverev (quarters, on Wednesday night) proves that I can still play at the highest level. I just hope that I will be able to physically keep up with Sinner.' 'He has shown now in the last period that he is back to the level,' Sinner said of Djokovic's form. 'It's going to be tactical and very, very difficult.' In the first of Friday's semifinals, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz plays the world No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti. The 22-year-old Spaniard leads the head-to-head 5-1, having finished on top in their last five meetings. Four of the duo's six matches have been played on outdoor clay.
