Gatchalian urges stronger protection for OFWs amid DMW labor agreement talks
Senator Win Gatchalian called for enhanced protections for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) negotiates with foreign nations for potential job placements.
Gatchalian emphasized that the DMW must strictly monitor the welfare, security, and well-being of migrant workers to prevent abuse, neglect, and unfair practices.
While recognizing the benefits of overseas employment, the senator also highlighted the importance of fostering inclusive economic growth in the Philippines to reduce the country's dependency on foreign jobs.
He urged the government to focus on creating meaningful employment opportunities at home to prevent Filipinos from seeking work abroad.
The DMW is currently engaging with several countries to establish more legal and secure job pathways for OFWs, though concerns over exploitation and abuse in some host nations continue to prompt calls for stronger safeguards and government oversight.

Taiwan extends visa-free entry for Filipinos until next year
Filipino travelers can continue to enjoy visa-free access to Taiwan for another year, following an announcement by Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung during the Philippine Independence Day celebration hosted by the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei. The extension, the minister said, is part of Taiwan's efforts to foster stronger people-to-people connections and enhance overall bilateral relations with the Philippines. An official statement from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirming the extension is expected to be released on Monday, June 16. In 2023, Taiwan welcomed around 415,000 Filipino tourists, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. The island nation is also home to an estimated 160,000 Filipino migrant workers. The continuation of the visa-free policy is seen as a boost to tourism and cultural exchange, reaffirming the close ties between the Filipino and Taiwanese people.

A recent survey of 10,000 Filipino expatriates in the UAE found that 82 per cent have plans to invest, primarily in property. This is significantly higher than the 2014 poll showing only two out of 10 Filipinos planned to invest. Fifty-five percent said they plan to invest in property, according to the poll conducted by the New Perspective Media Group, organiser of the Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition. Acquiring a franchised business or starting up a small business was preferred by 25 per cent and 15 per cent said they will invest in mutual funds. The rest said they are keen to invest in insurance (3 per cent) and gold (2 per cent). Of the 5,500 respondents who preferred property as their primary investment, 54 per cent said they plan to make the purchase within the next year. Manila was the top location, preferred by 53 per cent.
