Over 2,300 wild animals killed on Malaysian roads since 2020
CHUKAI: A total of 2,361 wild animals were reported to have been killed by vehicle collisions throughout the country between 2020 and today.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said Pahang recorded the highest roadkills with 765 animals, followed by Perak, 478 animals; Kelantan, 224 animals; Terengganu, 201 animals; and Negri Sembilan, 187 animals.
"If we look at species, elephants recorded eight deaths, one in 2020, two each in 2021 and 2024, and this year there have been three deaths (including the death of the baby elephant that went viral yesterday).
"There has been a slight increase in Malayan Tiger deaths, with no deaths recorded in 2020 till 2022, one in 2023, three in 2024, and one so far this year," he told reporters after a vehicle enforcement operation here today.
The government has and is currently conducting various initiatives to curb wildlife road kills, including an increased allocation of RM250 million this year to enable state governments to increase the area of their forest reserves, and also creating more elephant sanctuaries in Johor, Pahang, Perak and Terengganu.
A video of an elephant calf killed by a lorry and an adult elephant believed to be its mother trying to move the lorry to save the baby went viral yesterday on social media.
In a separate matter, Nik Nazmi said as of March this year, 90,024 vehicles were inspected under Op Gerak, and of the total, 248 compounds were issued for various offences.
Op Gerak was conducted to step up enforcement on motor vehicles to ensure compliance with exhaust emissions and noise levels to curb air pollution due to vehicle emissions.
"In today's operation, 21 vehicles were inspected, including diesel and petrol lorries, petrol vans and motorcycles, and from the total, one vehicle was issued a notice over excessive noise," he said.
On the uncertain hot and dry weather conditions that are expected to last till middle or end of May, Nik Nazmi said they would hold talks with various ministries and departments to coordinate all actions.
He also voiced his intentions to hold talks with his Asean counterparts on various matters, including hot weather and climate change.

Anwar also said that the continued actions of countries supplying arms to Israel are unacceptable and go against the principles of international law. 'It's contradictory when they issue statements of condemnation, yet continue to supply or sell weapons to Israel. Such actions violate the principles of international law and humanitarian norms. 'We strongly condemn (the atrocities) and seek diplomatic avenues to support the Palestinian struggle and help them reclaim their legitimate rights, including in Gaza,' Anwar said. Separately, Anwar said during phone conversations with leaders of other Muslim nations, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, they had expressed concern over the violence committed by the Zionist regime. He said the national oil company's move to downsize its workforce was instead due to global challenges. The restructuring process, he said, is necessary given the decline in crude oil prices. Fadillah also plans to meet with PETRONAS to get more details on the restructuring process. 'That is why PETRONAS has to relook its entire operation. 'I am planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of lay-offs can be reduced, if not avoided,' Bernama reported him as saying after the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here yesterday. On June 5, PETRONAS president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the national oil company would be cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on the following day that the lay-off exercise involved mostly contract workers. On May 21, the federal and the Sarawak state governments signed a joint declaration, establishing clear parameters and a collaborative framework for PETRONAS and Petros in the oil and gas sector. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company, under the Petroleum Development Act and its regulations. Following the joint declaration, the Prime Minister's Office said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.

Royal warning on haj travel scams

His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. The Ruler said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia. His Royal Highness also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs, Bernama reported. At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely. According to the statement, the Sultan and the Tengku Permaisuri also hoped that this Aidiladha would inspire all Muslims to be grateful for Allah's blessings and to perform the sacrificial rites to help the poor, as well as reflect on the plight of the less fortunate.
